Magnificent! The best of the best. This one has everything, comedy, drama, action and a script/story line that cannot be beat. Doc's inability to control his need to react to being pushed too far, Sgt. Saunder's really great ability to understand and react appropriately to another's needs and frustration and temptation... It was a special pleasure to see an episode based on Doc.

I remember an episode of Combat one of those in color episodes where Doc and a captured German Medic was working on a sick french kid. None of them had previous medical training before the war, the german being a store clerk and Doc was a "boxer". Doc being a boxer reminded me of the Muhammed Ali interview of being hit by some dickhead on the street. The reporter doing the interview asked why Ali didn't hit him back. Ali said "one punch from me would've killed him". Doc proved that theory.

Also great to see Hans Gudegast (Eric Braeden) here -- also an actor with a massive pedigree, and who shortly after this would become a main character on THE RAT PATROL. Still going strong and recently celebrated his 80th birthday.

I still love this series and very much appreciate the time and effort it takes to get these downloaded. Is getting weird though, watching all these episodes so far and seeing the same town getting blown up, the same sign post, the same hill. Maybe it wasn't so obvious when watching it in the day, every week. Still it doesn't detract from the show. There are exceptions of course but it's a shame one has to go back 30-40-50 years to find good TV again.

By the time that Combat aired, in the early to mid 60s, I and my friends were a little too old to play army with our toy soldiers, but we did watch these episodes each week religiously and discuss them afterwards. This was in Chicago, where there were many working-class families that lived close together in multi-unit apartment buildings and many of us boys would get together to play war, read comic books and discuss our favorite TV shows.

Peter Mark Richmond is retired and is 85 years old. Hans Gudegast (Eric Braedon) is still acting on CBS-TV's The Young and the Restless at 71 years old. The Truck Mechanic Ken Berry from F-Troop is now retired and is 79 years old. I try to do my part; you upload and I catch us up to date. Thanks again for all the high quality uploads!

Trivia: Conlan Carter "Doc" was nominated for the 1964 Emmy's in the category of best actor in a supporting role for this episode titled "The Hostages". He lost to Albert Paulsen who played Lt. Volkoval in the Chrysler Theater production of "One Day in The Life of Ivan Denisovich". Conlan Carter, Shecky Greene "Braddock" and Jack Hogan "Kirbie" are the only surviving cast members.

Mishawaka Post Our medics were not conscientious objectors either, yet the .45s they carried were to protect their patients. They were not to engage the enemy unless in the defense of their patients. One of them got their mettle tested one January evening, found in the balance, and came out shining. The medic was a Jets fan and we were in a Ludowici, Ga bar watching a game between NY and Atl to see who would go to the Super Bowl. I had already warned everybody not to show too much elation should NY win. I was watching my fellow soldier "rubbing it in" at the bar when some of the locals were overcome with "righteous indignation" at his "offense". The verbal attacks soon escalated to actual physical assaults. In an attempt to defuse the situation I took the medic into custody by putting my arms under his and shoulders around the back of his neck. I told him, "At Ease, It's Sgt Fulford." He complied and relaxed, Yet repeated blows to my head prompted me to release him and engage in full on assault. Because of the repeated blows to my head, I released the specialist and said: "It's on." Our group of five consisted of two "men" from my own section, a medic, and a commo guy. The two "men" from my section were nowhere to be found in the ensuing fight. The medic and the commo guy fought honorably. My two "men" were cowards. I would not recommend them for reenlistment based on that incident. I told one ot them tat if they reenlisted, that I would beat their ass.

Great episode, thanks for posting. The Germans made their first mistake when they killed the guy leaning back in the barber chair. They could have taken him hostage as well. The German captain was born in America. He must have been coached, his German was quite good. The German soldier with the dark hair ended up on Rat Patrol, another great TV show. He got a promotion, there he was Capt. Hans Dietrich. Playing a German was a natural for him as he was born in Germany in 1941. He must have decided the US would be a better place for him so he moved to the US.

There is an interview on KZbin where he discusses his time on Combat and The Rat Patrol. And the tone of it came across as if he disliked the roles. Although I'm hugely impressed by commentators knowledge here & very much enjoy hearing detail about other series & how the actors are today, I skip over the continuity & detail quibbles. Old shows like this, The Rifleman etc all had a strong element of allegory which is missing in most shows today. I just enjoy the message in every episode & don't get bogged down with perceived shortcomings of the medium viewed through eyes over 50yrs more 'sophisticated'

I REALLY liked this episode great acting all around. Doc REALLY landed some good punches on the kraut got him down an killed him Saunders watched an waited did not try an even stop him. Let doc do it maybe he wanted to have the experience, or he knew he was going to be killed by the German. He was going to need help getting back being wounded.

This is an amazing episode. Tell you frankly I found it slow in the beginning. Hostage stories drag. I fastforwarded to see the ending and didn’t quite understand what I saw so I decided to watch from the beginning. That was an amazing and beautiful ending, practically the climax of the story. Two of them were Junior Olympic shooters and one got to shoot on my TXARNG State Combat Pistol Team while I was the OPNS NCO of our SARTS and pistol team captain. Our neighborhood was Red Dawn-ready while my boys were in elementary & middle school. They were putting meat in the freezer on a regular basis. This is of course a very well known épisode where Doc (Conlan Carter) shows what appears to be another side of him. And indeed it is as well but I contend that the cohésiveness between the various squad members (even those who are there for only one épisode) has created bonds between them through Sergeant Saunders constant "teachings" that Doc knows what he has to do, come what may. I am not belittling Doc's own series of initiatives, far from it. All I am saying is that they should be seen in the light of the bonds that bind this squad together, bonds that are mostly there thanks to Sergeant Saunders (Vic Morrow). Even Captain Aptmeyer (Mark Richman) immediately recognizes these bonds and banks on them for Doc to bring back a truck for him and Ecktmann (Hans Gudegast appearing here again). This is a famous épisode and Conlan (born Chester in 1934) deserved a nomination for his rôle in this épisode. Conlan left acting in 1986 to pursue flying professionally. Capt. Aptmeyer - Mark (born Marvin in 1927) Richman to Jewish parents has been seen in a great number of TV series and a few movies since the 50's until quite recently. Oh I understand *technical difficulties as well. My main technical difficulty is having been born in the age of Tonka Trucks Mattel burp guns* not keyboards and a mouse. Doc should have told the first sergeant the truth. It's an Army headquarters. How difficult would it be to take out two of the enemy. The first sergeant and the officers have enough sense not to rush the barbershop and get the two prisoners killed. Nice to meet the first sergeant, though. Yeah, and me like an idiot was searching the web to find out if they had a variant that looked like that. They used that prop gun way to much. A paratrooper uses it and you see it alot in that episode. James Caan also was shooting blanks in that episode I thought?. Considering the fact that they used the G43 a much rarier firearm for the germans, using a bad looking Prop gun like that should be shameful. Well they did use some Us variant for Tanks in these episodes, and whenever there is a German Halftrack it is an American. And quite often they use American 30 cal. machine guns on vehicles. Guess they were not concerned in more Realistic use of equipment. Today they CGI German vehicles so they at least look accurate.
