Every year on March 16th I remember this unforgettable match. I remember the day well. Leaving my office in the city centre early. Getting to Anfield at 5.30. The gates closed at 6pm. Keegan scored after 72 seconds. 51 mins, Bathenay with a magnificent leveller, Ray Kennedy scores 59 minutes. 84 mins, and Davie Fairclough runs 30 yards and those of us in the Kop virtually sucked the ball into the net. Pandemonium ! Bedlam ! The ground exploded ! Greatest game ever seen at Anfield ! 16.3.77.

It was the Greatest game ever seen at Anfield for many, many years, but I reckon it has been joined recently by the Barcelona Semi-final and The Dortmund game in Klopp's first season. I watched the St Etienne game on a little black and white telly on Warwick Street in the South End. My brother had gone to the ground but it was a lock out. He came home about 5 minutes before the KO. Most exciting 90 minutes of my life ever. I hope to God my wife doesn't ever see this. ;)

Worth mentioning the reaction of rocheteau when his goal was disallowed for offside. It must have been close but neither he nor any other players surrounded the ref in a threatening manner as we see so often today. What a great team St Etienne were in every sense.
@danilosantana991 Жыл бұрын

Rocheteau lives just down the road from where my wife grew up in South West France. He is seen around by people in the local area. He has always been on the left as a strong socialist, which definitely meets my approval and I would imagine most of Liverpool.

This time on March 16th 1977 I was wandering around the streets near Anfield in a daze, having forgotten where to take the bus home, such was the drama and emotion of that match, especially in the final minutes minute when David Fairclough scored the winning goal. @@jonathanlfccortis5006 not true, the kop held 28,000-30,000 at its peak capacity
@jonathanlfccortis50064 жыл бұрын
@@duncanmiller1288 .....that might well be true, but I did read 26,000 was estimated as it was thought many fans got in without paying, so could’ve been slightly more, could’ve been slightly less. Also, legend has it, the roar of The Kop when Fairclough’s cool finish hit the back of the net could be heard from over 5 miles away!😮

Bellissimo ricordo!

I was just 9 years old. Watched the match on the telly in Norway. It was late in the evening for me. I think I cried of joy into sleep. The walls in our bedroom were covered with LFC posters. I knew most the players. I was so proud of the team and proud to be LFC fan. I don't remember if there were school the next morning. I bet I couldn't wait to go to school. I must have slept well that night.

That last cross by Keegan. Got cut out by the defender. Keegan came to my hometown of Kawerau NZ. Took our 1st team for training drills. He took the ball to the byline and crossed a ball for me ... made it stop in mid air!! I scored a header from a Kevin Keegan cross! 62 years old now We've had some number 7s but he would still be my 1st pick. Wonderful player YNWA

The fans of today think top class football only really began in the age of the premier league. But when I was a young lad the players I saw regularly were also top class. And there were no stupid adverts on replica shirts. Also the commentators actually described what was happening on the pitch unlike some of the idiots who talk drivel while the game is underway these days.
