What makes them great and what makes them fly just a bit under the radar is that they have never "sold out" and let the label dictate their music. It's always been Grace, Matt and Steve. I gotta buy me a whistle now and try to figure out some picture scenario that is weird and wonderful enough to win the one Grace painted. lol

The CD is filled with great tunes like Ah Mary, too, as is their more recent CD. Grace is just AWESOME. And I had the pleasure of meeting her several years ago, and she is cool and gracious and nice, too. Wonderful to see her have success.

It's good to see a talented & fun band get well-known the old-fashioned way... they're paying their dues, playing bars, graduating to concerts, then TV, bigger record deals, etc... Not like a lot of fake bands nowadays that the corporate music business groomed & made "famous" overnight, all for the money. Grace & her band are the real thing.

I had heard Stars before and then heard a competitor on "The Voice" cover Paris. I went to find out where the song came from and became instantly obsessed with GPN. I got all the studio albums, have haunted all the KZbin channels and we went to see them at Wolf Trap last month. One of a very, very few groups that are even stronger live than on studio cuts.

There should be more modern rock bands like this. I remember back in 2015, when the band broke up, and Grace Potter has since gone solo, beginning with the album "Midnight", an album that I didn't really care for, her follow-up album "Daylight" was marginally better, but her solo albums can't compare to the Grace Potter And The Nocturnals albums. She still does some really good live performances tho! To my ears (and everyone's entitled to their own opinions) Grace Potter And The Nocturnals sound very retro, especially with the classic screamin' Hammond featured in so many of their songs. And Grace Potter herself is a perfect example of a multi-instrumentalist, specializing as a keyboardist and guitarist (IMO Grace is a better keyboardist than a guitarist). I can hear 100% Janis Joplin influence in her voice, and her style of keyboard playing reminds of Billy Preston. There'll "never" be another instrument like the Hammond organ. I love how Grace switches from the guitar (a Gibson Flying V) to the keyboard (a Hammond B3 organ) in the middle of the song! I've never been to any of her concerts, but I've heard that her live shows are amazing!

This song and its lyrics figure prominently in Bill McKibben's new cli-fi comic caper novel RADIO FREE VERMONT, see my blog post with link to lyrics here: cli-fi-books.blogspot.tw/2017/10/two-songs-figure-prominently-in-bill.html Two songs figure prominently in Bill McKibben's new cli-fi comic caper novel RADIO FREE VERMONT: [lyrics are here] Two songs figure prominently in Bill McKibben's new comic cli-fi caper novel titled RADIO FREE VERMONT. One of them is AH, MARY and here are the lyrics and the KZbin link where Grace Potter performs on the Jay Leno Show in 2007 She's skilled at the art of deception and she knows it She's got dirty money that she plays with all the time Yeah, she waters the garden and maybe she just likes the hoses She puts herself just a notch above human kindAh, Mary She'll bake you cookies then she'll burn your town Ah, Mary Ashes, ashes but she won't fall downShe's the beat of my heart She's the shot of a gun She'll be the end of me And maybe everyoneYeah, she's the beat of my heart She's the shot of a gun She'll be the end of me And maybe everyoneCall her a bully, she'll blow up your whole damn playground Pour her a drink and watch it go straight to her head She'll take you so high up and cover her eyes as you fall down Then in the morning, don't be surprised if you're deadAh, Mary She'll… KZbin LINK, words and music by Grace Potter kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWeZaJaugZaAgpI ========================================= The other song in the novel is ''O-o-H CHILD'' by Stan Vincent in 1970 KZbin linkkzbin.info/www/bejne/gH-zYZKlmqx_hMU "O-o-h Child" was a 1970 single recorded by Chicago soul family group the Five Stairsteps and released on the Buddah label. Previously, the Five Stairsteps had had peripheral success recording in Chicago with Curtis Mayfield: when Mayfield's workload precluded his continuing to work with the group they were reassigned to Stan Vincent, an in-house producer for Buddah Records, who had recently scored a Top Ten hit with the Lou Christie single "I'm Gonna Make You Mine". Vincent wrote the song for his son, Chuck. The Five Stairsteps' debut collaboration with Vincent was originally formatted with the group's rendition of "Dear Prudence" as the A-side with Vincent's original composition "O-o-h Child" as B-side. However, "O-o-h Child" broke out in the key markets of Philadelphia and Detroit to rise as high as #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1970. the track's R&B chart impact was more muted with a #14 peak, although "O-o-h Child" is now regarded as a "soft soul" classic. Billboard ranked the record as the No. 21 song of 1970. The Five Stairsteps' only pop Top 40 hit, "O-o-h Child" would be the group's last R&B top 40 hit (they had several top 40 R&B hits in the 1960s) until 1976's "From Us to You". Included on the band's The Stairsteps album from 1970, it has become the Stairsteps' signature song and has inspired more than twenty covers since its release. The song featured various members, including lone female member and eldest sister Alohe, brothers Keni, Dennis, James, and lead singer Clarence Burke, Jr. singing in various parts of the song. The lyrics tell the listener that "things are gonna get easier" in times of strife. The song's uplifting message helped the song to become popular among pop and rhythm and blues audiences when it was released. LYRICS HEREkzbin.info/www/bejne/jmfdk6qChqudiK8

There must be some mistake. An American record label signed a real female musician. Clearly somebody will be fired for that/ Time for congressional hearings to make sure it never happens again. First, Orianthi and now Potter. Pretty soon, women will be demanding that they be viewed as more than glorified eye candy. And we can't have that. :p Seriously, though, while Potter's songs aren't going to exactly go down as the best of all time, her vocals and musicianship pack a lot of authority.

@turoniner A glittery dress is "the same" as having a fleet of dancers, songs written by outsiders, and performing in a champagne glass (the very Katy Perry you mentioned)? Seriously? Frontpeople dress with flash in all kinds of bands, but she's actually singing/playing, not lip-syncing while her constumed posses cavorts behind her. They're not even close, this is an actual MUSICIAN...as so many performances here demonstrate. A short dress is "the same"? Beyond ridiculous.
@turoniner
@turoniner 13 жыл бұрын
@ZanaDude You know why it's the same? Because it shows her willingness. If some slick label guy told her to have a giant champagne glass you know she'd do it. She's being a fake-o for attention, unlike the greats who were real and GOT attention. And there is nothing impressive about her singing playing. She is playing the exact same chords and junk as has been played to DEATH for the last 50 years. Big fucking deal she's a "musician," there are a BILLION others out there. Medicore. Period.

No doubt, Grace has got a great voice and it's refreshing to see a new female artist who was clearly influenced by classic rock and the blues, but I feel that this band has gone through drastic "American Idol"-style makeovers to turn her into some sex object. It's not rock and roll anymore. The short skirts and super high heels are too much. It's even worse now that they have a female bassist who also wears short skirts and super high heels. Grace was more authentic before the makeover.
