I've been playing guitar for almost 40 years and when I heard this song back when it was released I thought to myself, wow, that is some great guitar playing. But I didn't know the guitarist's name until many years later. As much as I like this particular song, its not as though Natalie Merchant was taking the music scene by storm and releasing a bunch of songs that were being played everywhere. @stricknine8623 a couple things: 1. NO, it was not just this song. Listen to Jen on Carnival, among others 2. "Underrated" literally refers to how the public rates you, not how musicians rate you. Musicians have always rated extremely talented people that were undersold by the mainstream media/critics much higher than the mainstream. When people say Jen is underrated, what they're saying is people will put Kurt Cobain as one of the best guitarists of the 90's, yet won't even recognize Jen in the top 100, which she OBVIOUSLY deserves to be

This is high art and I missed it at the time. Let's make it right. Natalie's got a new album out that is gorgeous and lush. I hope Jen finds a vehicle to become KZbin famous as well. Next level.

this is what always struck me about this song (and this video is so helpful because the guitar is nice and loud in the mix) - this song is like a duet between the vocal and the guitar, and it's so smooth. when you say "high art" i agree 100%

Just frikkin EPIC! Brings tears to my eyes it's so beautiful. Not to mention this aired at a time where I was going from one of the worst times of my life. To a run of almost 5 years straight that was the best years of my life. Until I decided to drink again one night. It's okay though. I've been sober for a few years now. Damn lucky to be alive though. Many of my friends aren't, including my best friend who I grew up with. Died of a heroin (more likely Fentanyl of course) OD a month, or so before I decided to quit myself. But thank God for music, and my audiophile hobby. Now instead of spending all my money on drugs, and being miserable. I have thousands of dollars worth of audio gear I play with, and feel like a kid again. Reliving all the great times I've had through music, and just keeping at peace in general because of the music. And no TV for me, it just makes me angry to see where the world is at. But that's okay, there's still a lot of really good people in it. So there's always a chance we'll get back to something good again. God Bless you all. ✌️

How I wish that guitar solo exit had gone on another minute or two. I have recently become a huge Jen Turner fan. Really love her style.

The first time I saw 10,000 Maniacs was on SNL in 91’ I think. I was absolutely blown away and still am every time I hear her voice. Some of the best music ever made came out between 89 and 93.

Never mind her looks. This woman has so much control, power, range and uniqueness in her singing. One of the greats.

@@paultynan8705 lol, relax man. He’s probably just a kid. Unless someone grew up in the 90’s, or followed Natalie post Maniacs it’s unlikely they’re familiar with Jen.

The 90s were simply the best! Take me back!

Jen was an awesome guitar player. The tone and solos she played for Natalie was awesome. I played them when i was in high school and to this day they stand strong.

Still enjoy this, what an excellent band. Jen Turner's rhythm and lead technique is simply beautiful, I love the "call and response" style between her playing and Natalie's vocals.

She gave away a great deal of life force with that song. Any decent singer does.

I remember when I saw this very show on TV. I was in Sweden for work. I didn’t know Natalie Merchant songs before. Next morning I bought Tigerlilly and then all of her albums…

This was the song that was playing the very moment I was expecting my daughter. She's now going to be 20 in February. She's in second year pre-law at a top Canadian university. She's expecting my grandson in April. She is continuing her studies in summer intersession and we are all very proud of her.

I've probably watched this 50 times. I loved 10,000 maniacs since In my Tribe, and always loved every solo Natalie Merchant song. This is one of my favorite performances.
