My mom used to tell me this was my song. I was born 3 months premature and ended up having a brain hemorrhage and getting Cerebral Palsy as a result. I didn't really understand why she was telling me this was my song until recently. Here I am, with spastic Diplegic CP & halfway to nursing school with a 93.4% score on my entrance test. I'm going to be a NICU nurse :) "This child will be able"

One of the best guitar parts of the era. It's a solo throughout the song, counter melodies, SO much emotion in the part. IMO perfectly written. The song is a just a poem without it.

@@cw9790 Anyone that plays guitar rates her well. She is not under-rated. Under-known maybe. I've been playing guitar for almost 40 years and when I heard this song back when it was released I thought to myself, wow, that is some great guitar playing. But I didn't know the guitarist's name until many years later. As much as I like this particular song, its not as though Natalie Merchant was taking the music scene by storm and releasing a bunch of songs that were being played everywhere. It's folk-type music, except this song.

@stricknine8623 a couple things: 1. NO, it was not just this song. Listen to Jen on Carnival, among others 2. "Underrated" literally refers to how the public rates you, not how musicians rate you. Musicians have always rated extremely talented people that were undersold by the mainstream media/critics much higher than the mainstream. When people say Jen is underrated, what they're saying is people will put Kurt Cobain as one of the best guitarists of the 90's, yet won't even recognize Jen in the top 100, which she OBVIOUSLY deserves to be

Smitten. Wow, what an angel. I remember late 80s, both 10,000 Maniacs and Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians were huge. They stood out from the other pop music of the day. Natalie Merchant sure had longevity. So many beautiful songs.

I didnt take the 80's and 90's for granted. I enjoyed them immensely I had alot fun as a young adult. We were spoiled with so much great music coming from every angle that Natalie Merchant took a back seat to it all. This song was on the air waves alot but I didnt realize how beautiful of a song it really is until now. I saw 10,000 maniacs opening up for REM in 1986 and I didnt have a clue who 10,000 maniacs or Natalie Merchant were. I guess I did take her for granted. Sorry Natalie.

This video changed everything for me. I never paid attention to the songwriting on this album, the guitar work of a 22 year old phenom and her tasteful rhythm section. Turner's guitar is mixed so high in this mix. Every note serves the song. Tone's in her fingers. The lyrics of this song served as an anthem for families dealing with birth defects. This is high art and I missed it at the time. Let's make it right. Natalie's got a new album out that is gorgeous and lush. I hope Jen finds a vehicle to become KZbin famous as well. Next level.

this is what always struck me about this song (and this video is so helpful because the guitar is nice and loud in the mix) - this song is like a duet between the vocal and the guitar, and it's so smooth. when you say "high art" i agree 100%

Just frikkin EPIC! Brings tears to my eyes it's so beautiful. Not to mention this aired at a time where I was going from one of the worst times of my life. To a run of almost 5 years straight that was the best years of my life. Until I decided to drink again one night. It's okay though. I've been sober for a few years now. Damn lucky to be alive though. Many of my friends aren't, including my best friend who I grew up with. Died of a heroin (more likely Fentanyl of course) OD a month, or so before I decided to quit myself. But thank God for music, and my audiophile hobby. Now instead of spending all my money on drugs, and being miserable. I have thousands of dollars worth of audio gear I play with, and feel like a kid again. Reliving all the great times I've had through music, and just keeping at peace in general because of the music. And no TV for me, it just makes me angry to see where the world is at. But that's okay, there's still a lot of really good people in it. So there's always a chance we'll get back to something good again. God Bless you all. ✌️
