Yan is tricky because you’d first assume it rhymes with dan or zhan. But then when you hear it, it sounds so different and it becomes difficult to distinguish the exact pronunciation. The way you compared it to the -ian like in lian or dian makes a lot of sense. Thanks, I always had uncertainties about this. 新年快樂!

I tortured my wife for almost a month trying to pronounce Chu1 qu4 as a pair, example Chu qu wan. My tongue wasn’t moving fast enough from the roof of my mouth for Chu and behind my lower front teeth for qu. It was like doing push-ups for my tongue. I think I finally got it, however you threw in some new ones I have to practice now. Just a suggestion: what about some short phrases with those difficult words so there is some context for usage (like the Chu qu wan example) short but sweet.

This is why I much prefer the old Wade-Giles transliteration. Pinyin gives Westerners a mistaken idea of how many words are pronounced. Hsia is easier to get than Xia. Once you understand the differences in pronunciation between chou and ch'ou, for example, it's simple; but zhou trips a lot of people up. And don't get me started on "simplified" characters...

Pinyin has completely ruined my pronounciations. You really need to learn all the pinyin pronounciations independent of their english pronounciations before you get started with mandarin. Going into it expecting something resembling english phonetic spelling results in everything being mispronounced. Now I have all the mispronunciation ingrained in my memory so I'm having to go back and relearn a bunch of words.
