Please can you also try out a REALLY strict coeliac diet to highlight how expensive/difficult it is to eat gluten-free too? Sure, a lot of foods are naturally gluten-free - but every day life including simple pleasures can be really difficult. Pringles crips have gluten in them, a lot of packet sauces contain gluten, shops such as Lidl are particularly difficult to shop in for gluten-intolerant people (e.g. a lot of their desserts, special offer items are not gluten free) etc. Would be really great to see someone live a whole week how a coeliac has to and see if you notice a difference in your shopping costs and how happy you are with the number of "nice" things you can have x

little rule of thumb for anyone wanting to try: practically anything in a packet, bottle, jar (excluding single ingredients like oats, rice, etc.) you can almost guarantee it will contain refined sugar because it's used as a preservative. took me a long time to figure this out lol - buying whole foods (fruits, vegetables, grains, etc.) and making everything from scratch is the way to go!

I'm glad you brought up the disclaimer and talked about how when you restrict it often makes you crave more. This is SO important for people to realize who make these kinds of stringent changes that aren't specifically needed due to a health concern. Moderation is SO key but also can we PLEASE have products that aren't so processed. So exhausting to look for decent products at a decent price.

Welcome to my life 🤣 I can't do any of the sugar substitutes (agave, sucralose, sorbitol, etc) and have to watch my sugar intake, plus other food intolerances means I have to read every.single.label. There are so many names for sugar and sugar alternatives that you just start making everything from scratch, but as you see even things that should just have one ingredient (dried fruit! nuts and seeds!) have to be checked as well. Good job, and we all slip up from time to time. Thank you for showing how frustrating it can be to be social when you have to know all the ingredients in your food! (now go enjoy that croissant!!)

well agave is sugar and sucralose and sorbitol are possible irritants as they´re artificial sweeteners, have you tried erytritol/xylitol? they´re natural and safe polyols that don´t store in your digestive tract, they "pass right through". i also am sensitive to these, but erytritol is usally fine with me,

I have been refined sugar free for almost 3 years, obviously with the occasional bit of cake here or chocolate bar there. But I just wanted to say that the sugar substitutes help a lot, and for me as a type 1 diabetic, it is all about reducing blood sugar spikes. So it’s still hard, but I think it’s probably easier for me as a diabetic because I really feel the effects sugar has on my body. Love your video and perspective! I really appreciate you trying this out!
@rapa2894
@rapa2894 2 жыл бұрын
Sugar substitutes are worse for diabetics than pure sugar, actually. They cause blood sugar spikes and crashes because your taste buds still think you are eating sugar, and then your body sends out more insulin. But because you didn't eat actual sugar, you just crash. It can also lead to weight gain. This has been studied extensively, so I would suggest you look into it for your future health. I have had many patients die because they don't listen. There are a few natural sugar substitutes that are better but nothing is better than eating whole foods, including real sugars, in moderation.

I think if anything this vid goes to show how useful sugar can be in cooking for balancing flavour! Almost all tomato-based products have sugar in them because otherwise they end up being incredibly acidic, dried items like dried fruit use sugar to balance the tartness and/or bitterness that can intensify when the fruit is dry, and most (east) asian dishes use sugar along with vinegar, salt (or soy sauce), and other spices to create that amazing "umami" flavour (ex the "vinegar" in sushi rice is rice vinegar and mirin, which is a sweet fermented rice alcohol lol)
@redwineandagingerale
@redwineandagingerale 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely! But it's also in everything else and not every product needs it. Sometimes it's added for flavour to genuinely improve a product, sometimes it's added as a preservative, but a lot of the time, they add it because we're conditioned to like sweet things and will likely buy the product again.

I love when people like you make honest videos about safe experimental nutrition (with the proper disclaimers) because it gives a realistic view of what shopping and consuming certain foods (or lack there of) looks like! How often do we hear "oh everything has sugar in it now and days" and most of us roll our eyes and go "yeah!", and then when it comes to food shopping we only look for the very obvious and well know signs of sugar, but we don't see the hidden sugars and ingredients that may sometimes be a step up from straight sugar, but can still not be healthy.

My Hubby stopped eating red meat and sugar around 2 years ago (I don't eat red meat or fish either - only chicken on a rare occasion). Boy oh boy did it drive me bonkers in the beginning because sugar is in EVERYTHING! We make our own homemade bread and cook a tonne so we've adjusted quite well to it now....but just to be clear.....I am not sugar free. I couldn't do it if you paid me, teehee. Although my Hubby was born with anosmia (no sense of smell at all), so food is just fuel to him. He doesn't get tempted by anything because he can't smell it and his taste is diminished too. I'm convinced that's why this diet change has been easier for him. And he is looking and feeling so much better for it. Me? Nah mate...no thanks, lol. This was a great video, honest and amusing. I smiled through the whole thing. You were very brave because you really love your sweets. A good whole-food sweet treat we like at our house is a medjool date stuffed with a nut or peanut butter and rolled in cacao powder [fatfree cocoa bean], its delish and sweet naturally. Also black bean brownies sound awful but can fool anybody, sweetened with date syrup [cheaper to make than buy -- blend dates with water].As for choc milk or choc pudding use pureed dates too. Add 2 dates to any smoothie, frozen bananas, berries, flax seed, greens, nut butter, etc = instant sugar treat. We often make soy milk shakes [cacao powder, dates, frozen banana, vanila] that are thick, rich and sweet. With popcorn for movie night [uh every night]. Those are just a few things we do to lessen our added refined sugar. Donuts are my downfall too but you're so right ''life is too short'' to do without entirely. Thank you for showing how challenging it is to be completely refined sugar free. Cheers Grace and love from CT, USA, XO

Loved this video! I miss your experimental videos of you trying things for 1-2 weeks! In the past I have tried to do various 'fasts' including: no sugar (or sweetener) for a month (lasted just over a week), no chocolate for a month (lasted almost 6 months in total but slipped up after I went sugar free) no lactose for a month (lasted 2-3 weeks because I found out your body needs lactose to create the bacteria to break it down?), no caffeine for a month (I am still caffeine free two years later) and reduced salt for a month (still conscious of my salt intake after this). By far the hardest was the no sugar for the pure fact that it is literally everywhere.. and it really limits your experiences when going out because like you said, they just swap sugar for sweetener. No doubt the dough had sugar in Pizza Express, and that's what's hard about it all. I cannot empthaise enough with people who go sugar free for health/medical reasons - well done you!

I agree that everything in moderation is the best philosophy if you are otherwise healthy. The most interesting thing to me about these kinds of videos is the knowledge it gives you about just how many foods have added sugar. Our bodies actually don't benefit from eating refined sugars but they are as addictive as actual drugs so we still crave them. If you go refined sugar free for a while, your body actually stops craving the sugar because it is surplus to our physical needs. We eat 100s of times more sugar in our modern diet than at any time in history so understanding just how insidious it is in pre packaged foods is a great health lesson

If you did want some kind of a sweetness in bars or homemade treats you could try dates, date syrup or health food products that contain dates like snacking bars. Usually found at health food shops. In Australia I've found some delicious products made with wholesome ingredients and things that are usually sweetened with sugar (like snacking bars, breads, slices & biscuits/cookies, cakes, and even smoothies or homemade caramel sauce) are made with dates. But I do love your commitment to zero sugar & sweeteners and that this video shows that sugar is basically everywhere and in almost everything these days.

I did sugar free February last year with a friend and it was incredibly difficult. We worked out it was easier to cook everything from scratch. Other friends said that we were really grumpy but we both slept really well that month. Had some sugar withdrawal headaches too!

Grace, just be grateful you only had to do the diet for 10 days! I just had my baby 4 days ago and was on the gestational diabetes diet for 28 weeks! Not only could I not have refined sugars but I had to limit unrefined sugars and carbs too. I couldn't even have fruit or porridge in the mornings! In saying that he was worth every single sacrificed biscuit!

Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol so not technically a "refined sugar" and it occurs naturally in a lot of fruit and is also used as a sweetener in a lot of products. Anything ending in "ose" is a sugar so glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose etc. are all sugars.

Yay grace! I commend you for doing this! I read another comment and also think you feeling a cold on was actually your body detoxing. Something to think about.. with Halloween rolling around my mum bought bag of Reese’s and there already out ready in a bowl and I’ve eaten like 6 of them since..sugar is such a strongly addictive substance and if you quit you will experience withdrawal symptoms just like any drug

Great job, Grace! Btw. Sugar is in everything, because people behind the sugar lobby love to make some big bucks. It's very addictive and legal... Sugar sells! Owners of the companies love that too. lol

13:46 “I don’t wanna be sat at a table with my friends, while they’re all enjoying life, thinking, “Ugh. I can’t have a donut.” …that’s not fun! That’s not a life worth living, I can tell you that for free.” Welcome to my life for the past 9 years. ☹️ Not because I’m choosing to be sugar free, but because the medical conditions I have severely restrict what foods (and drinks) I can consume without ending up in hospital. Missing out on food is hard enough, but missing out on the social aspect of eating / sharing food with others is the hardest. No more grabbing a coffee with friends. No more going over to someone’s house for dinner and actually be able to eat what they’ve made. No more birthday cakes with family. No more sharing a pizza with a friend. No more going out to try a new restaurant with your spouse. It really sucks.

For me, my ED recovery has taken a lot of me. Btut it has also given me the healthiest mindset around food I ever had. Everyone else is on their paths and might enjoy eating sugar free but it takes so much mental energy up to restrict a large food group. No thanks, I rather use that energy into more fun and productive things, join in any meal with friends and live with a peaceful mind. Love the relationship with food you portray and your calm and nice persona. If you're ever in Berlin, girl, I am a foodblogger now so I can show you the best this city has to offer haha

Refined sugars are things made from corn, cane sugar and sugar beets. On packaging they are presented as sucrose, glucose, and corn syrups. Artificial sugars at lab made. The difference between artificial sugars and refined sugar is that artificial sugar has a low insulin response so it won’t spike your blood sugar like refined sugar will. If you want to use more natural/unrefined sugars try things like molasses, maple syrup (the real stuff), honey and coconut sugar. I only use sugar when working with yeast because I don’t know if it can feed off of artificial sugar. I love use sing natural sugars for substitutes and have been doing it for years. I’m also not saying I don’t have chocolate bars in my pantry as I speak. As a nutrition student I can say sugar is a widely misunderstood topic among society.

Ive been sugar free for years for health reasons. Which naturally means i have to make everything from scratch, cant eat out, cant eat at other peoples homes, AND can only buy frozen or fresh veg/fruit because canned is done in sugar syrup. Most dried fruits have additives too. So if i need dried stuff i usually have to dehydrate it myself. Add on i also cant have salt so finding things that are both sugar AND salt free only having lactose fructose & sodium (in their whole forms) aka fruit veg etc. Its extremely hard to find anything processed or convienient or even what youd consider a basic ingredient that hasnt been adulterated. Its honestly horrific how hard and often expensive it is to eat typical whole foods. This turned into me growing as much as my own food as possible & preserving it myself for convenience and out of season otherwise i rarely can attain it and if i can its expensive af or you guessed it preserved with sugar and salt. Whats worse is theres not even a reason to add sugar or salt. Its not necessary to the recipes savoury or not but its always added. its so funny to me to watch people make such a song and dance over essentially living a small taste of my life. Homegrown & homemade tastes amazing and is better for you anyway 😊

This was my life at first when I had to give up gluten. Learning that it's in stuff you don't expect it to be... literally checking ingredients for every single product. Was a pain at first 😅 I got used to choice of products (partially at least), the fact that everything is less tasty, it's a challenge to make a tasty pizza and even the fact that everything is way more expensive. But yeah, not the most cheerful thought 😅

My boyfriend and I did the Alzheimers UK quit for a bit sugar challenge last year - 1 month of no refined sugar in November. It was so difficult!! Just decided in the end to try to avoid it as much as possible, but if we had something in the house (pasta sauce, ketchup etc.) Not to beat ourselves up about it.

Q: how does anyone in the audience/comments with diabetes or pre-diabetes, deal day-to-day with having to filter out and manage your daily intake of refined sugar products? Do you often have to make healthy packed lunches & take them with you just in case you can’t find appropriate sustenance on the go? ✌️

Hey there, actually that’s pretty much what I do. I have a small lunch bag I keep with me that I pack with the amount of snacks that I imagine I’d need for the day along with a water bottle. I usually have a variety of snacks at home (we are big snackers) that are low sugar that we enjoy. I find it fun to choose which 3 I want to take to enjoy throughout the day. Its great when you’re away from home and you have a few great options to choose from at all times. I do not like sugar alternatives because they actually give me side effects and my sugar levels are pretty under control. Here’s a glimpse of my snack options: - Pre-cut fresh fruit from the grocery store like pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, mango, etc. (I get the pre-cut because we like to have a bit of a variety fruit available. Small amounts of a wide variety. It’s also more convenient for us but cutting it up yourself is more cost effective) - a peanut butter sandwich with whole grain bread and low sugar pb - more fruit like sliced apples with peanut butter, plums, a banana, Asian pear, or any fruit I see at the grocery store that I’m curious to try. -low sugar trail mix bars (careful even the low sugar ones should be eaten in moderation) -nuts and cheese cubes -carrots and humus -plain yogurt with a small amount of honey and dried oats or a small amount of granola (already sweetened so you won’t need to add honey) -a naturally sweetened smoothie (ex: half a ripe banana, blueberries or any other fruit , spinach or kale, unsweetened almond milk ) -Rice cake topped with cream cheese and ham or peanut butter and sprinkled with 1/2 tbsp dark chocolate chips These are just snack ideas to have in between your low glycemic meals. I’m definitely no expert it’s just something that has worked for my dad and I. He has type 2 diabetes and I am also watching my sugar intake since just about everyone in my family has type 2 diabetes. Please check with your Doctor , but having this variety of snack ideas has really saved us from over consuming processed sugar which we will have occasionally. Hope this is helpful!
