In the sense of, you observe a tree and when you give the tree a name, the thought of the name disturbs the moment you observe the tree. while you listening to any kind of music, do you think all the time "oh there he did this and there he left this." ? very clear and good explanation, these videos are well done with a straight structure. the only thing I noticed the pause of the crotchet, there are different means to write them...here in Italy in old theory books are written like a double "quaver pause", which means something like a "Z" , rather than an inverted quaver pause.

the way I have always remembered which is the semibreve rest and which is the minim is to imagine the stave as a water line and to think that the 'heavier' 4 beat brick would be below the water line, and the 'lighter' 2 beat brick would float on the surface of the water. got to remember that they are on different staves still, though :)

My mother taught piano lessons for many years. In the U.S. we refer to a memory aid as a "pony". The ones she taught her students included the "whole" rest "looks like" a hole in the ground and the half rest "looks like" a hat. I don't know about other parts of the world but, here in the United States, one of the most common "mistakes" in music is for people to not give the "rests" their proper value. Thus, if the last measure of a musical phrase in 4/4 time includes a dotted half note and a quarter rest, some people will play (or sing) the three-beat note and then give the quarter rest half of its allotted value - so the measure gets only 3-1/2 beats before they begin to play (or sing) the first note of the next phrase. I sometimes wonder aloud how such people can manage to walk. Would they trip themselves if they tried to walk the way they "count" the beats in a song?
@MusicMattersGB Жыл бұрын
I agree about rests. It’s a common issue
@rogermetzger7335 Жыл бұрын
@@MusicMattersGB It has occured to me that some people might be under the impression that being the first person to sing (or play) the first note of a musical phrase constitutes "leading the music". Just a theory. No basis in evidence.

Sometimes I like to take slight cheats. For example, the start of Fur Elise on piano, I tell myself to do FIVE semitones (between E and Eflat) before descending. I'll count them in my head so I don't have to look at each individual note.

I can think if more. If I see G7 written, I tell myself "normal G7" as I discovered it first. If I see "Gmaj7", I tell myself "G with that semitonal thing going on" meaning the G and F#. 😄

Hahahaha, I just realized how straightforward our names are in French. The notes are called, in order you presented them: une ronde (a round), une blanche (a white), une noire (a black), une croche (a crooked, or maybe it’s from un crochet which is a hook) and une double (a double). I think it’s quite funny.
@MusicMattersGB3 жыл бұрын
Yes I love the French names.

Kinda confusing. All this time I thought the note names and rhythm values were universally expressed. Never heard of the references you're making to them. Doesn't mean it's unheard of, just for me, it's confusing since I have a difficult enough time remembering the notes and rhythm values I've learned for sixty years.

Sorry about that. There are two conventions. One is whole note, half note, quarter note etc. The other is semibreve, minim, crotchet etc. Much more at www.mmcourses.co.uk including details of our online courses and of our exciting Maestros programme.

Wait you call a quarter note what? Man, I honestly thought quarter, whole, half and so on was standard in the Anglosphere at least. Either that or the semiquaver stuff but a crotchet? Just strange to hear it.
@MusicMattersGB4 жыл бұрын
Hi, in the UK and other parts of the world we use different names. Semibreve = Whole Note Minim = Half Note Crotchet = Quarter Note Quaver = Eighth Note Semiquaver = Sixteenth Note Hope that makes sense. See www.mmcourses.co.uk for much more. Thanks
@darrenwilliamroddy90184 жыл бұрын
I never heard the term 'quarter note' until today. I grew up learning they were called crotchets. We always use these terms in Ireland.
@MusicMattersGB4 жыл бұрын
Yes. It’s standard in our part of the world but the American system is in common use in other parts of the world. I teach people online around the world and am always switching between the two systems.
@AmarothEng3 жыл бұрын
@@MusicMattersGB In the central Europe, we use Whole/half/quarter... note naming system as well, just translated to our respective languages. The only major difference is that a lot of us use German terminology, marking the B note as "H". Why is beyond me, I always thought it to be stupid, but I guess ISO did not hit music hard enough yet :D.
@MusicMattersGB3 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s true plus other ways of describing note lengths eg the French system.

Hi, I love your teaching style, I have Grade 5 theory but after a long break realize I have lost my feel for rhythm, I set a metronome when I play, mainly piano now, but do you offer a course that would develop this feel, that I have currently lost? Thanks.

Is it true that you can only have one whole note per bar to be able to subdivide it into half notes, 1/4 notes, 1/8th notes etc? Or is it ever possible to have a multitude of whole notes in a single bar? Just curious as I've started to learn drums.
@MusicMattersGB2 жыл бұрын
Technically you could have more than one whole note per bar but in reality it’s very rare. You’re more likely to have faster moving rhythms.
