Grading every pick for the #Patriots #Bills #Chiefs #Jets in the 2024 #nfldraft
Why I do Draft Grades Videos:
This is a fun exercise to visit how I believe these players will produce for these teams, what these coaches and players can work on to make these Grades look wrong in a few years, vice versa, as well as what these Drafts might tell us about a certain team’s plans or opinions on existing players on their roster or the types of schemes they are looking to run.
DRAFT GRADING CRITERIA
DAYS 1 & 2
“S” -Certified Steal
• Need, team/scheme fit check out and the value is better than expected
“A”
• Value, need, and team/scheme fit all check out
“B”
• Good pick, but one of the following apply
o Player was a slight reach
o Positional value in question (1st Round Only)
o Team passed on a better player at the position for the team
o Team ignored value at a major need (1st Round Only)
o Team/Scheme fit is in question
o An otherwise “C” graded pick due to value and/or better players being available, but a massive hole at a value position (QB, OT, WR, ED, DT, CB) was addressed in Round 1 with a still good player that wouldn’t have been available for the team later
“C”
• Fine pick but two of the following apply
o Player was a slight reach
o Positional value in question (1st Round Only)
o Team passed on a better player at the position for the team
o Team ignored value at a major need with (1st Round Only)
o Team/Scheme fit is in question
“D”
• Pick is in question as three of the following apply
o Player was a Slight reach
o Positional value in question (1st Round Only)
o Team passed on a better player at the position for the team
o Team ignored value at a major need with (1st Round Only)
o Team/Scheme fit is in question
OR Player was a major reach
“F”
• A truly inexplicable pick as player was a major reach, AND team passed on a better player at the position for the team, team/scheme fit is in question, or team ignored value at a major need or positional value is in question (1st Round Only)
"-" May be applied if pick required a high trade-up price
“+” For a reach following a trade-down
DAY 3
Certified Steal (Purple)
• Team stole a player who had a Day 1 or 2 grade who has a legit shot to be an impact player
Great Pick (Green)
• Team found above average value and a player with a legit chance to start within the first couple of seasons with the team OR a great role player in a key spot right away (Goal line back, #3 D-Lineman, TE2, dime back, kick returner, etc.)
Good Pick (Blue)
• Value lines up and player is in a great scheme or opportunity to find success as a starter or key role player relative to most Day 3 picks
Solid Pick (White)
• No notable criticisms of the pick but expectations should be tampered as with any Day 3 Pick
Reach / Will Regret Not Taking… / Not a fan (Orange)
• (Round 4 & 5 only) Player was a notable reach and/or notably better players would have been better picks, but the player still had a draftable grade
• (Round 6 & 7) Player was evaluated and did not have a draftable grade
Massive Reach (Red)
• (Round 4 & 5 only) Team took a player who did not have a draftable grade OR reached multiple rounds while passing on several better options for the position

As a patriots fan I gave their draft a solid B as well, I think your analysis is spot on with my thoughts. It’s going to be interesting to see if they regret passing on McConkey/AD Mitchell for Polk, but otherwise a solid draft where they addressed all their glaring needs. We will see if they got the right players, but at least they are making a legitimate attempt to give Drake Maye help. No real complaints overall

The Keon Coleman pick is interesting. They talked about him on the PFF NFL podcast and they said that his profile best fits a big slot rather than X receiver. When you look at his physical measurables, his RAS, his GAS, and his PFF grades, the only player with similar profiles that have done well at the NFL level are big slots. They had a list of 15 of them, maybe 5 were good and 10 didn't do anything in the NFL , but the hits included Cooper Kupp and Amon St. Brown. Coleman was in the bottom 10% in getting open against tight man coverage compared to other receivers with draftable NFL grades. He was better against off man coverage and best against zone coverage. He is also good at contested catches so even if he does not get separation he can get a catch, but being in the bottom 10% at getting separation against tight man coverage is a red flag if you see him X receiver. I think like 4 out of the 5 hits of guys with similar profiles, were big slots. So taking their evaluation seriously, I think the Bill made a bad pick if they want him to be their X receiver, like a D grade. By contrast if they embrace his strengths, it could be an A pick. My take on the Dolphins top two picks are they got boom-bust guys. Both Chop Robinson and Patrick Paul have incredibly traits. Robinson was the most explosive and had the best bend of the Edges in this class. But there was a reason he went fourth amongst Edges and that is because he is so reliant on those traits to inclusion of power and pass rush moves and his run defense is meh. Patrick Paul is athletic with some of the longest arms in the history of the NFL but his technique needs a lot of work. The floor on both of them is low. Their floors are that they never develop into NFL starting caliber players--for example Robinson ends up being the next Yannick Ngakoue, a pass rush specialist utilized on third downs and Patrick Paul just ends being a back up caliber player who is thrust in a starting lineup and struggles before being relegated to the bench where he hangs around as a backup for a while. On the other hand, they both have pro bowl potential as they have elite physical traits. In terms of Olu Fashanu, I am not as convinced he is a good pass blocker day 1. I heard Ramon Foster, who was a 7 or 8 year starter at G for the Steelers, talk about Fashanu during an interview on the PFF NFL podcast. Foster's take was that Fashanu's feet were amazing in pass protection, but he has technique issues, that he usually got away with in college (they would cause an occasional bad pass protection snap in college, but usually didn't end in a bad result) that are going to lead to more bad pass protection snaps in the NFL. Regarding the Jets draft, Sam from the PFF NFL podcast never liked Braelon Allen, who was projected as a day 2 RB. His analysis was that he just bounces it out too much for a big running back his size. His game needs to be more north and south. So can the Jets get him to play more like a big bruising RB could be a big factor on whether Allen becomes a good starting RB in the NFL or a frustrating guy who is part of a committee but is only ever the 2nd or 3rd guy in the committee because he is just too inconsistent because of bad snaps where he leaves yards on table.

I will say IMO Josh is at his best targeting the intermediate area of the field, particularly when Daboll was around. Tho to your point those intermediate crossers end up a lot less open without a vertical clear out threat. Hopefully samuel’s speed can create some semblance of that for this offense, but I think focusing on intermediate crossers rather than more conventional deep routes where Josh’s accuracy has always been spotty is better for Buff. (P.S. they def should’ve double dipped n grabbed Troy Franklin over carter)
@Matt-tk3yk
@Matt-tk3yk Ай бұрын
My guess is that buffalo either thinks Keon or Samuel can be the vertical threat. I hope so at least because, as a chiefs fan, not having a reliable vertical threat limits the offense significantly, even if you have a top 2 QB (which both kc and buffalo have imo).
@choosecarefully408
@choosecarefully408 Ай бұрын
Possibly. However, even with Brady's swing towards those Josh *has **_had 2 TEs_* who can catch in that area & why didn't he concentrate on them? Three reasons. 1) Josh only seeks the long throw? This doesn't work because he shifted to targeting Shakir over Diggs no problem. 2) These TEs suck but we the fans don't see it? 3) The reason no one's being sued for libel over that article about McDermott is it's true & he meddles in the offense like The Worst Micro-Managing HC. To give you an example of how terrible M-Ms are generally, bad o-line play follows Frank Reich everywhere he goes. Instead of assigning Extra Blockers with TEs etc. when calling for passing routes that take longer to develop, he switches up the o-line plays simply because he feels the need to change things, leading to sacks. When you consider he's a former QB & QB coach, that's one heck of an urge for him to bot be able to overcome. The other is Matt Eberflus. Remember when the Bears were the #1 offense in the league _BEFORE_ they acquired D.J. Moore? Who cancelled those plays & why? well, the OC couldn't do it without the HC noticing, right? So, because A was winning them games making him useless, Eberlfus ceased calling A. He admitted several times (when no one asked. What an ego) that he limited the plays he allowed the offense & therefore his OC to use. He's also the one who called for Fields to not pass to certain receivers on certain plays. Most fans excused this by saying "they had to do this in order to simplify the offense for Fields" but having to read a receiver's jersey, then remember whether the coach said he's one you're allowed to throw to, _then_ remember to continue scrambling instead of just throwing to Ant Open Receiver Isn't _SIMPLER!!_ But that's how micro-managers are. They invent excuses to meddle even when it's clear they don't have to. I wonder how things are gonna go when Caleb continues expressing his individuality or starts making plays out of structure? Poles hired 'Flus over other, more qualified candidates because they both agreed they wanted Fields out for Caleb. But now Fields is gone. If Eberflus interferes with Caleb on the field, and he will not be able to stop himself from doing so, well, who Poles hired he can fire. Heh.

A couple notes from a Pats fan. We've been told that Caeden Wallace has experience at LT, but got moved to RT because of the emergence of Fashanu. Not sure how much better I feel about that pick - but there you go. Also the Patriots drafted Marcellas Dial as a safety, rather than a CB due to his poor short-area agility. The plan is to mold him into an Ed Reed-type ballhawk.

i’m surprised your so low on daniels. he has a lot of the same issues lamar had coming out in terms of arm talent besides strength and pure accuracy (daniels accuracy imo is fine). his issues are coachable with the decision making issues while running and reading the middle of the field more being his biggest. his offense didn’t need him to read the middle of the field with two insane outside threats and the type of offense they run so idk docking him down THAT much for that is kinda early cuz we truly don’t know how good he could be at it. idk i get being lower on him than maye but mayes issues r a bigger red flag to me with his accuracy and footwork so idk why it’s such a night and day differnce with those two for you love your videos btw

I love the clips of Coleman that Buffalo has shared. His ability to remain at full speed while running the gauntlet was impressive and I think his floor is high but his RAS compares almost IDENTICALLY to former Bills WR Isiah Hodgins. Hodgins is a fine WR, great RZ threat with the big frame and hands but he has always had issues separating. Keeps him from being an elite X you expect from a big,strong 6'4 WR youd expect because he just can't threaten enough with speed nor has the quickness to open guys up. I hope he vastly outperforms Hodgins as a WR but the traits are nearly identical.

well, is this coinsidence, that when Joe Brady took over Diggs' and Davis', who are ball winners downfield, production plummeted while Cook, Shakir and Kincaid, who are all yac threads first and foremost, thrived? and, what a surprise, Keon Coleman is also massive YAC thread, who some put as power slot, as a prefered position, also has fantastic hands, which is opposide of Gabe and 2nd half of the season Diggs. and Franklin, Walker and Baker are not creating after the catch like that and not as good in intermediate game, so i dunno, if that fitted with recent WR philosophy. all bills starting skill position players (Cook, Shakir, Kincaid, Coleman, Samuel) are all yac thread slot types, this is THE fit, not deepball catchers like Gabe Davis and Troy Franklin. and there is no correlation with Allen's arm also, besides Ed Oliver and Daquan Jones (who is old btw) there is nobody on dline who is a nfl starter level players (no offense to Austin Jackson). and Carter were capitan in Duke, which is important for the team who lost 5/8 capitans. I am more than fine with that selection another one, underrating Edefuan Ulofoshio imo, i loved his tape in pass-defense, at 6'2 230, also a capitan. he was my LB4 and 100th player on my big board, good replacement of Tyrel Dodson and special teams player so, bills come out with 2-3 starters (Coleman, Bishop, Van Pran (maybe)) and at least 4 important contributors (Carter, Solomon, Ray Davis, Van Pran as 6th linemen, which Bills use a lot), and Ulofoshio and Hardy impact on special teams this is a homerun draft.

I get your fear, bc of Bryce Young’s horrible rookie year, but I bet he shines man. Even with this cast. If they can run the ball well, which the panthers obviously couldn’t, Maye can still succeed early.

I think one thing that people don’t talk enough about with the bills draft after the double trade down is why not simply draft Newton at 34 to fill the DT need, use their later second and third to get Allen two fresh projects to work with? They know that the class is deep enough that the positional value difference between Coleman, Bishop, and Carter compared to Newton, Roman Wilson, and Washington as the first three picks would go over a lot better with everyone, including bills fans

I am a Jet Fan and I don’t share your sentiment. I just don’t like day three. I would’ve spent more pics on an interior offensive lineman and a wide receiver. I hated the Isaiah Davis pic and they kept on trading back when there were guys like Christian Mahogany available. I think that a good game plan is to look to draft interior offensive lineman in every day. You’re going to find actual starters at IOL in rds 5,6,7. I really like the Fashanu pick, I would’ve been OK with them taking Bowers however not at 11. You would have a rookie tight end getting paid in the top 15% of all tight ends. I am a little surprised it was Fashanu just because the questions about his running game strength, but I’m sure he’ll be OK. I love the Corley pick, I liked the Braelin Alan pic, but I’ve become a little bit of a non-running back snob when it comes to the draft. And since Joe Douglas has been there, he’s drafted a running back in every draft which I don’t love. Stiggers seems like a nice risk if nothing else although I’m never going to call him by his last name during a game. I would’ve felt a lot better if this draft would have included somebody like Christian Mahogany and Johnny Wilson on day three but it is what it is

The Dolphins have this feeling of being smoke and mirrors based. They're extremely effective against teams without the talent to disrupt their gameplans, but high-quality competition that forces them off their spot gives them fits. All window dressing, little substance. Maybe that changes, but it certainly does not seem that way right now.

I agree that the Bills drafted the wrong WR. They could have gotten Mitchell from TX in the 2nd rd as he is faster with similar size and can stretch the field. Patriots couldn't afford to take McConkey with his injuries. The Patriots admittedly went really safe with their Day 2 picks. I wouldn't have been safe, but don't think that was a mistake. I would have gone AD Mitchell, Kiran Amegadjie, Erick All, Christian Mahogony with rounds 2-4. But Polk is WAY safer than Mitchell and Wallace is a bit safer than Amegadjie (though I would argue he's not nearly as good as Javon Foster).

I really don't understand your frustration with the Polk selection at 2.05. Ladd McConkey doesn't add anything to the Patriots offense that they don't already have. Ladd is ideally a slot WR, which New England has 3 of. AD Mitchell, while I do agree is the better prospect, there was a reason why he fell like he did, the Pats weren't the only WR needy team to pass on him. There must have been good reason. That leaves Polk. You can only draft how the board falls, and Polk was the best WR available. Because of that, he would have went 2nd round regardless. In no world would he have fallen back to the Pats at 3.04 like you were suggesting. Also I would much rather have Polk+Baker over Ladd, without that trade down they don't get Baker.

Personally, I feel you have to kill the Dolphins draft. Did they get value? Sure. But to win in the NFL only one thing matters, and it’s your QB. And with Tua in a huge prove it year in terms of contract, you need to give him every chance to succeed or fail with good protection. If Tua gets killed this year and bombs, it doesn’t help him bc he won’t get his bag, and it won’t help the Dolphins bc they’ll just get blasted out of the first round again or worse. To only draft one lineman, and an extremely raw one at that is near malpractice in my opinion

You can definitely criticize the Dolphins draft. I dont think you can say that this team isnt fun as shit though. Theyre playing madden, full 99 speed team. Screens, slants, streaks and stretch runs, just outrun everyone. How fun is that. We've never seen anything like this before. Do i think theyre building a team that will do great in the regular season but always fall off late in the year and into the playoffs? Yes. Do i still want to watch it? Yes. Whatever these shanahan teams have where they dont care about the interior of the line is weird though, i understand.

Patriots fans - love the Maye pick, OL even if bit of reach, and last 3 picks, but do we feel these WRs were the exact type we wanted to avoid? The Devante Parker, nkeal harry archetype of great contested jump ball catching, but no explosive speed or crisp route running for reliable ball movement. I’m hoping it’s more bc Maye is better with these types of WRs, was expecting them to go w someone w more speed like Adonai mitchell over Polk, or Franklin over baker. I hope I’m wrong, j my analysis.

I don't hate the Polk pick. Sure would've loved to have Mitchell, but frankly, speed can be overrated. We've seen it before with John Ross. Just because you're fast doesn't mean you're gonna be amazing. The Patriots built their dynasty off of physical, strong catchers who could run consistent routes. Now, yes, I know that was with Tom Brady, but the idea that speed is just gonna make an immediate receiving impact more than a physical route runner is kinda bizarre, especially when guys like Wes Welker, and Julian Edelman were the star receivers for Brady.
