I'm fully convinced that Howie Roseman has bought into the idea that the wisdom of the crowd is something that is underutilized in the NFL. He follows the consensus board more than any GM I've ever seen and it really looks like it works out most of the time, as he's gotten some fantastic value on players throughout the years. From what I can remember, in the first two days of the draft over the past 4 years, he has gone with a general consensus pick with 9 or 10 out of the 13 picks he has made. The only ones that were clearly off the consensus at the time were Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, and Sydney Brown. And even they weren't crazy reaches, just a little off of what I expected him to do at the time. Jalyx Hunt is the one that is a little arguable... I had him as a 3rd round player and my 9th best edge, but a lot of people had him lower so the public was kinda split on his value. I love watching Howie work every year, even if I'm not a big Eagles fan.

Really you just had to be “there” to really appreciate where we/Howie is now. Pre Smitty pick, it was an entirely different process and expectations. The Eagles have had good drafts (Kelce/Cox…hell even Wentz was a good pick - in the grand scheme of things) but those were in spite of the fact the first round was usually always an OL or just some wildcard pick that was completely different than the teams true needs. Picks were seemed either entirely decided before the draft even began and the pieces fell OR they just outright neglected the way the board fell and massively overthought picks. I wanted Howie sent to Siberia after he passed on Jefferson for Raegor, although initially I was happy just to see him FINALLY spend a pick on a WR. But in keeping him, we’ve really seen a GM who’s learned from their mistakes.

The Hurts pick is a good example. I’ve like Hurts since college and was always a believer, felt he got a bad hand at Bama and was startled by the pick. It worked out tho but really that was a typical Howie pick even in 2020 just getting players and not addressing needs. This draft he passed on 2 Bama grads for a Toledo and an Iowa DB bc they really fit our scheme / needs and have upside.

Commander fan here and I’m still optimistic about our long term success. And I guarantee there are a lot of us excited about the future and excited about this draft. They’re looking at Brandon Coleman at Tackle. That’s where his best tape was anyway. Also JD definitely does throw over the middle and I think you’re underestimating his ability to go through progressions and process a defense. He’s a smart and hardworking kid. Finally, Adam Peters is making an effort to fill the room with captains and high drive/character guys. We went 4-13 for a reason last year.
@TheMattTrakker
@TheMattTrakker 4 ай бұрын
You can look at a heat map to see how infrequently JD threw over the middle. I don't think he's saying that he literally never does it, but it's a very small percentage of his throws. He really doesn't go through progressions well, some of that is because his WRs were very good so he probably didn't have to as much and some of that is because he'd run so often. Saying he didn't isn't the same thing as saying he can't, though.

@@TheMattTrakker and I can actually watch games to see him do it. When you have the two WRs he did in a college offense, of course the stats are going to skew to the outside, you’d be foolish not to take advantage of that. However, watching him, I see someone willing and able to throw to the middle. Also I regularly saw him get to his 3rd and 4th reads/checkdowns. He’s a pass first QB. He’s only looking to run if the rush gets there.

Alright, I prefer Maye as a prospect, but even I have to say giving Jayden a D is way too harsh. You even somewhat defended the Michael Penix pick, but you hate this? Everyone knew they were gonna take Daniels anyway. A C would feel more appropriate. If I was looking at Coleman's 2023 tape alone, I would agree that he was a horrible pick. But his 2022 tape tells me that there's something there. I heard he was playing through injury in 2023. Even if he never works out at Tackle, the Commanders need a long-term solution at LG as well, so I don't think that pick is that bad. They should’ve done more address OT, I will say that. As for Luke McCaffrey, the Commanders were looking for a big slot WR. Luke's 6' 2" and 200lbs with athletic upside. Sure, he wasn't the best player available, and maybe there is some nepotism there, but he was what the team was looking for. They already have a dozen small slot WRs, they don't need another. Javon Baker might be the only one I could have seen them taking over him. And him coming from a family of NFL stars isn't exactly a bad thing. The league spoke on Sanders. His lack of blocking caused him to fall. I'll gladly trade up for Sinnott. Washington also had a type in entirely drafting team captains. They want these guys to be the tone setters and future leaders of their team. I get it, you have your own grading process and player evaluations, and that's fine, but giving them a D is a little much. Only time will tell how these drafts pan out, but I don't think this draft is nearly that bad.

I heard an interview with Trevor Sikkema, where he was asked why the draft community was higher on Maye than Daniels and NFL front offices were higher on Daniels than Maye. Sikkema answer was coaches in particularly are more scared off by bad fundamentals like Maye's footwork. They prefer to teach how to read defenses and things like that to a QB. Fans tend to think teaching fundamentals like foot work is easy, but if a QB already has an ingrained pattern, correcting fundamentals can be a longer process. From my own observation some QBs never get the fundamentals correct. The Commanders had Carson Wentz in 2022. He has some similarities to Maye (though there are big differences too). The similarities include a big arm and sloppy fundamentals that leads to inconsistent accuracy. Wentz's inaccuracy was a bit like Maye's inaccuracy. Some games, Wentz was fairly accurate and the next game he would be throwing a number of uncatchable balls. Wentz's fundamentals were not great; I remember beat reporters talking about how the coaches talked about how his arm angles were constantly changing and he didn't have a consistent release point. Its nice to have Mahomes ability to throw from a bunch of angles, but when throwing from a clean pocket you don't want to have a consistent throwing motion. And it just lead to inconsistent accuracy. Daniels may not have the upside of Maye, but he is a cleaner prospect in some regards.

I agree that Howie and Veach are the best GMs in their respective conferences. I think the main difference is that Howie tends to take the best player available largely regardless of position or scheme/culture fit, whereas Veach is often looking for the best remaining player who fits into the Chiefs' scheme and culture. There are benefits to both methods, clearly, and I don't know that one is necessarily better than the other.

give me poles over howie. if you actually look at it, outside of carter, howie has missed a lot recently (i do love the quinyon and dejean picks, but the track record..) on the contrary poles went and got dj and caleb for bryce. got sweat to help eberflus have a top 5 defense that only allowed 15 ppg (post trade), and now odunze and swift to pair w williams. they also figured out oline. it seems like almost everything he's done has been a homerun, and he somehow landed the greatest talent we've seen since luck.

As a Commanders fan, using the grading rubric that Marcus is using I would grade our draft: 1. Jayden Daniels (B) I had a slight preference for Maye, but I was less confident in my preference than Marcus. Front offices were fairly split between Daniels and Maye. I heard two former Commanders coaches (Jay Gruden and Ron Rivera) say they would take Daniels for Kliff Kingsbury system, though Gruden said he thought Maye had the potentially higher ceiling and Rivera said he would take Maye for a pro-style offense. But the key thing for me is coaches and scouts were fairly split. If we took Maye, I probably give the grade an A, but I do think it was a much closer call between the two. 2. Jer'Zhan Newton (S) I am using S grade here to mean a great value pick. Newton was 24th on consensus board and the Commanders got him at 36. Using Jimmy Johnson's trade chart, the 24th pick is worth 740 points and the 36th pick is worth 540 points, so there is a 200 point surplus. 200 points is equal to the 78th pick. Now the consensus board could prove wrong, but it did seem like a good pick, taking best player available rather than need. If you were going to say this pick should be an A rather than an S it would be based on the idea that DT was not a need. 3. Mike Sainristil (A) Again, a nice surplus value using the consensus board. Sainristil was 40 on the consensus board and teh Commanders got him at 50. Using the Jimmy Johnson chart, pick 40 worth 500 and pick 50 is worth 40 so that is a 100 point surplus. He did fit a need. Thee Commanders have three guys who are arguably better at outside corner (Michael Davis, Emmanuel Forbes, and St. Juste). Granted St. Juste can play either slot or outside. So getting a slot corner was a need, not a pressing need because St. Juste or Quan Martin could play it, but this allows you to play Martin at Safety and rotate your three outside corners based on matchups. Sainristil in my opinion was a really good college player, who is undersized and lacks ideal athleticism, but I feel like if the coaching staff knows how to use him, he could be a top 10 slot corner with a few years. 4. Ben Sinnot (B-) As a Commanders fan I am very happy with this pick. I think Adam Peters sees him as the next potential Kyle Juscyzk. Granted that is a lofty vision, but I do think Sinnot was my number TE. Bowers was the runaway top TE, but after that I think Sinnot was probably the best combo of blocker and reciever. That said I give it a B cause the value. Maybe Sinnot makes it to 67 maybe he doesn't, but 53 is fairly expensive. To use the Jimmy Johnson chart pick 53 is worth 115 more points than pick 67. I doubt Sinnot makes it to 100, so if the Commanders wanted him they probably had to take him at 67, but I think there is decent possibility he would have been there at 67. I like the player and he fills a need, but maybe we took him a bit early. The consensus board had him at 85 for example. That said I do like Sinnot a little more than the consensus. To me, his value was probably somewhere around the 67th pick (which was the Commanders next pick) which why I grade this as a B rather than a C which is probably where I would grade if I just went off the consensus board. 5. Brandon Coleman (C-): Commanders took him at 67 and he was 104 on the consensus board. I didn't really have him on my radar before the draft other than I did note his combine testing. But using the Jimmy Johnson we lost about 180 points of value taking the 104th player at 67. Realistically I think they reached for need a bit. Given teh amount of Tackles that went after him, I don't think Coleman makes it to 100. People tend to reach for tackles due to lack of supply. As a prospect, Coleman has the physical tools, but just wasn't a good college player. He did play through some injuries in 2023 and that may have lead to his "meh" season. But I do see this as a reach. 6. Luke McCaffery (C+) He was 138 on the consensus board and he was taken at 100 so a bit of a reach. Like Coleman I didn't really follow him much before the draft. It makes it a bit harder to judge the pick because I probably like him a little bit more than 138, BUT I only came to that conclusion after teh Commanders drafted him so I probably do have some bias involved. But based on the consensus board this was a reach). 7. Jordan Magee (I like it) By the consensus board this was a reach, taken at 139 when 180 on the consensus board. Like Coleman and McCaffery I didn't really have a take on him before the draft. So I like him more than the consensus, but bias could be involved as I didn't have a take on him before the draft and I am a Commanders fan. Think he'll be a good special teamer and have a chance to develop behind Luvu, Wagner, and Davis and then probably get a chance to compete for a starting spot in a few years. 8. Domonique Hampton (I like it) Another reach going by the consensus board. He was drafted at 161 and was 192 on the consensus board. Dan Quinn does like a big nickle and Hampton as a 6'2 215 pound safety fits that big nickle welll. He is a backup, probably drafted only to be a backup and special teamer, but drafted as a scheme fit. 9. Javontae Jean-Baptiste: ( I like it) yet another slight reach as he was drafted at 222 and was 243 on the consensus board. I see him drafted as more of a good potential backup, but its hard to know what the front office was thinking. He is not explosive as a pass rusher and that limits his upside, but he is a guy who can cleanup as a pass rusher and who is a solid run defender. A guy maybe you stash on the practice squad for a year then who is your 4th or 5th DE in year 2.

For what its worth Jayden is 2 rather than 3 years older than Maye (20 months and 12 days to be exact, Maye was born on August 30, 2002 and Daniels December 18, 2000). That makes sense as Maye is a 3rd year player and Daniels is a 5th year player. They are both a little bit old for their classes as Maye was 19 as a true freshman and Daniels turned 19 in December of of his freshman year.

I agree that Maye should’ve probably been the pick at 2, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that apparently everyone in the NFL preferred JD over maye so maybe there’s something to that. Was thinking this over and have a couple more comments. I know you weren't a fan of the trade, but if we picked Dejean as you suggest we should have, we still were in the same position in the 3rd round for finding an OT (Unless we instead reached for one in the 2nd). So, what were the options? Amegadjie? He's a project, which isn't what we need. Glaze? Seems to have injury issues and given he was at Maryland, probably got a good look at him. Goncalves? Maybe, tho maybe similar to Coleman. That's it for the 3rd round. Fine to be critical of the trade back and fine to be critical of taking Sinnott over an OT, but you can't be critical of both, since the latter doesn't happen if the former doesn't. As for McCaffery, someone local made an interesting point that the team wasn't going to make another pick until the 5th round. So, maybe stretch a little bit.

A big part of the jalyx hunt pick that makes a ton of sense is how similar he is to reddick coming out of college. Both former safeties new to the position coming out, both athletic freaks with great bend, and according to Vic fangio, it was his favorite defensive player in this whole draft. I think he has great upside with his athleticism, I expect him to likely sit behind huff or wherever baun is this year and will likely be a rotational pass rusher that you could just tell the guy to go tackle the dude with the ball in his hands. To add, he’s got bigger hands and longer arms than reddick.

I understand you think Maye and Daniels are in completely different tiers...but a D grade here would suggest the mother of all reaches and a complete head scratcher pick. Really like your breakdown however I would include players acquired from draft picks (burns), how the Gm plans to use all the pieces (elevated pass rush with burns and Thibs and how that will force the ball out faster allowing a player like Nubin to read to react) and how the teams will plan to play divisional opponents. Also I think another reason commanders selected Daniel’s is bc there was a high probability the giants were going with nabers. Both players already have a side bet that will elevate their play and benefit both teams. I think commanders made the right pick and will be fun to watch LSU elite players play head to head this year.

Couldn’t agree more on your round 2 ding on the commanders! Trading back sacrificing Dejean to take Sainristil and Sinnott was so ridiculous, and I love Sainristil and Sinnott too. I wanted Dejean or Sainristil for my Steelers, or Tykee Smith for that matter, but passing on Dejean is ridiculous. He would walk in as the best true corner on their team. I’m playing Dejean at outside corner all day in base over their first rounder scrub last year.

I watched some tape on Theo Johnson. He was a better pass blocker than you are giving him credit for. He definitely was open on routes, and the QB just flat out missed him. Excellent option in red zone. His traits do show up on tape. He was definitely one of the better tight ends. His ras was almost identical to Jimmy Graham.

Finally, someone who shares my concerns with Theo (and I'm Canadian, I'm rooting for him) and I think if Waller retires its Bellinger who skyrockets. At worse, Belly is the Gronk to this very light Gronk/Hernandez combo. Yes, VERY LIGHT, I recognize that. But Theo isn't the route runner than Aaron was either. Is it me, or is holding my Bellinger stock looking up when the market is probably looking down on it right now?

I think you should grade the picks as they are, as opposed to "dinging" a team for making a trade that landed them said players. Downgrading a teams selections because you don't like how they acquired them seems a bit overly critical. If you like the Sainristill & Sinnott picks enough to give them "A" grades then just do that. If you want to do an episode on grading trades then that's fine too (we might like that actually) but I wouldn't factor those moves into the players grades.

With regards to the Commanders Draft, I think there's a lot that's good, a lot that's bad, and I'm not entirely sure we're trying to be competitive this year. That being said either we are very confident in these dudes we were drafting or else we are still bad at evaluating talent bc there's definitely some reaches here. I don't really expect much from us. I think Jayden looks pretty good though.

I don't know about that. All of those WRs Marcus mentioned over McCaffrey all had one thing in common. They're small. Washington already has like 10 small, slot WRs. They wanted to add a big slot WR, and LMC fits the bill. The only one of those guys I could have seen them taking instead would have been Javon Baker. I agree guys like Gould and Washington were better players, but they didn't fit the mold of what the team was looking for. LMC has a lot of work to do, but he has more upside than I think ppl are giving him credit for.

I was listening to Logan Paulsen on Craig Hoffman's Take Command Podcast and on John Keim's podcast and he said there was a theme with the Commanders draft class this year and that was taking high floor, physical football players. But there is tradeoff for taking high floor physical players and that is you pass on guys with higher ceilings. This was an older class, 9 players taken total, three 6th year players (Coleman, Hampton, and Jean-Baptiste), four 5th year players (Daniels, Sainristil, McCaffrey, and Magree) and two 4th year players (Newton and Sinnot). 7 out of 9 were team captains, it is an older class with a high football IQ. The players tend to be physical football players (even if the small ones like Sainristil). They passed on higher upside guys to get guys that fit their type according to Paulsen. Paulsen thinks they drafted Luke McCaffrey as a big slot. Said they likely were impressed by his physical traits, he'll crack a linebacker or safety, he is fearless so he can be that quasi-TE, that said at 200 pounds, he'll likely need to add 10 to 15 pounds to make that work well. Said he is a hard worker, so while he is new to receiver, he should improve in his route running and has a father who is a long time NFL receiver and brother who can guide him a bit on that. In terms of Coleman and whether he is a T or G, Paulsen said his initial take was probably a guard. Coleman is a physical player and looks and moves more like a G than Tackle. He is a bit stiff at teh hips and does not have the flexibility to stay vertical in his pass protection so he will always bend to reach with his punch which means he'll lunge a bit. His hand usage in pass protection according to Paulsen was solid, decent punch, but because he cannot stay vertical there is going to be some lunging. Does a decent of not over or under setting. He had his best season, 2022, playing almost exclusively at LT (79.6 PFF grade), but his traits do tend to indicate Guard to some extent. He had a disappoint 2023 season (57 PFF grade) but he played through a high ankle sprain that probably limited his mobility, so we probably should not make judgements too harsh based on his 2023 FILM.

As a Giants fan I was worried over WFT hiring Peters because I know he was one of the other favorites to be our GM when we hired Schoen. It was nice knowing that in a division with the Eagles and Dallas slapping us around, theres always 2 division games for free thanks to WFT. I thought new ownership, a guy like Peters coming in and the potential to draft Maye the shelflife on those freebies was expiring and we would be hopeless as clearly the worst in the E. THEN THEY HIRED QUINN to be their HC. I could take a breath, okay well theres nothing that lowers the bar for a rookie QB than hiring a DC for that job. Then they hired Kingsbury and okay, now im starting to think maybe we're still not completely fucked just yet. If anything could fuck Mayes development it would be Kingsbury as his OC for a Def first HC. But still, Maye has top 5 QB potential, what if he overcomes the shitshow to flourish? The Giants will be fucked for 10 years, easy. Then the narrative that Daniels was going at 2 and OMG THEY'RE THE SAME FUCKING WFT I KNEW AND LOVED, but surely thats just agent speak. Theres no way you take a weaker armed, thin, takes WAY TOO MANY BIG HITS to come play QB in one of the only division that still plays in cold weather stadiums in the NE and expect to challenge long term. Surely they couldn't be that silly, right? Holy shit, they actually did it. I dont hate the player but if there is a situation more set up for a QB to fail than Daniels for WFT then idk. I dont love Mayo for Maye either but NE isnt the disasterpiece WFT has been. Feel bad for Daniels tbh, and maybe thatll change and Ill feel bad for me when he destroys us but itll be overcoming the odds for damn sure. Love his WRs but not his frame, propensity for taking the most vicious hits anyone took in all of college ball the last few seasons, his average arm WHILE PLAYING IN THE ELEMENTS AT PHILLY AND NY every year. Teams who hire a HC who was a DC then draft a rookie QB instantly lose all benefit of the doubt they have the QBs and therefore the organizations best interest behind their choices. Ryans is the exception, but the track record is clear.

That Howie Roseman meme is quickly becomming my pet peeve. Every year media hands out an A+ to Philly. "Howie has done it again!", "Another Howie Masterclass!" Can we just look at how their draft classes actually turn out for once. So many of the big names and so called steals they got over the last like 4 years haven't rellay turned out that great. Jordan Davis, Nolan Smith, Keele Ringo, Nakobe Nakobe Dean, Jalen Reagor,... the list goes on. They usually find 1 or 2 startes with their higher picks and thats it. They are doing fine in the drafts, but nowhere near as great as a lot of the media makes it seem. I dont wanna hate on Roseman too much. He is a Top 10 GM in my book, but describing him as this GM-savant that plays chess while every other GM plays checkers is insane.

I wish Dejean would just get pure outside corner snaps just to make the countless doubters look stupid lol. Dejean can be an elite cornerback, outside and inside. God I hope the eagles play em plenty on the outside, I get the arguments of how elite he can be in the nickel and at safety, but that caveat always comes with hes not quite athletic enough to play on the perimeter which is ridiculous. My pro comp isn’t cowardly Ramsey lite. My pro comp is Charles Woodson. He has all the athleticism necessary to play outside corner. Even if his hips don’t flip like 166 pound Nate Wiggins, it doesn’t mean he’s too tight like you made em out to be. Dudes a freak athlete. I did see that he was a bit stiffer than Mitchell and obv Nate Wiggins, he’s 206 pounds. Obviously he’s slightly slower. At his size he has good hip flip with elite athleticism all around. You were out here throwin up C+ athleticism grades lol I’m like what are you watching!!

Not gonna lie, I'm getting slight Lions 2023 Draft vibes with the Commanders picks. I think they got some really good players with their first 4 picks and critique is where they got them rather than the players themselves. Plus there's almost a direct parallel in player types with Sainristil and Sinnot being really similar to Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta lol. I liked Maye over Daniels too, but if Jayden develops into a borderline Top-10 QB like he's capable of I think he'd return value. It's gonna be real interesting to see how this plays out.

I think Eagles always seem like they drafted well because they're very much aligned to the media's consensus board. But let's be honest. It hasn't really worked out as well as they looked on paper, right after the draft. His drafts are overrated 2019 : Dillard was a huge bust and only player they got anything out of was MIles Sanders, who was a 2nd rd RB. 2020 : Reagor was a huge bust. K'Von Wallace, Driscoll, Quez Watkins were ok. Hurts was the one who saved this draft class (and the franchise really) and that pick was viewed as WTF pick 2021 : DeVonta is a top tier WR2 which is good, but not what you expect from a top 10 pick. Dickerson has been great though. 2022 : Jordan Davis for a top 13th pick spent on a run-stuffing DT hasn't been that great. Jurgens will get his chance to prove himself. Dean, who seemed like a steal, has proved rest of NFL right. 2023 : Carter is good as we all know. Nolan Smith hasn't done anything yet. We'll see how this draft turns out, but the Eagles' draft in general has been pretty meh
