Sana actively tries to improve her Korean even today. When she’s aware of a pronunciation mistake or when she finds a word she doesn’t know she’ll be fixing those pronunciation mistakes by next time and she’ll be using those words too. Momo has improved her vocabulary a lot!!! But she’s not as careful with her pronunciation.. as most foreigners. Like you said, it’s harder to have a native- like accent when you learn a language at an older age and both Sana and Momo started to learn Korean at 16. (Mina at 17 I think? And tzuyu 13)

Possibly also the fact that they had to practice speaking as soon as they got to Korea, and speaking too much early on reinforces some bad habits which could be avoided if there is a "silent period" of just gaining understanding and hearing the diff between all the sounds for example the double consonants. If you can't fully hear the difference it is very difficult to produce it yourself.

Sana is actually often (affectionately) called "native Korean Sana" in variety shows and such cause she speaks very confidently and seems to know words & expressions (and thinks of them on the spot) that even the Korean Twice members don't think of.

Sana's just a great speaker in general. She has that natural quick, fluid speech no matter the language and if you hear her speak in the Nizi Project finale she sounds like an actual professional Japanese MC/anchor. I looked up from my game I was playing to see if they hired some Japanese entertainer to MC the show but it was just her lol. So it's pretty great seeing her thrive in Korean. It's only going to continue to get better as her vocabulary and fluency catch up to her speaking ability. EDIT: idk if you cover it but before I forget, you're pulling clips from all over the last 5 years or so. I'm sure there's some obvious improvements in vocabulary and overall fluency in that time, so just keep that in mind in future analyses if you don't touch on it at some point.

So 鞄 kaban is pronounced kabang just like the korean 가방 ^^

From my understanding, Japanese does technically have "consonant doubling," at least insofar as how it's expressed in Romaji, but I think their "double" consonants (which are denoted by the use of before the consonant being emphasized in Hiragana and in Katakana) are still "softer" than Korean ones, and it really affects length more than intensity.

I’m not surprised Sana speaks Korean really well. You can see how she worked really hard. When TWICE first debuted, she still tried her best to speak in Korean even though her Korean skills wasn’t as good as it is now. Because of how opened she was to making mistakes, her Korean skills really improved a lot. And also, Sana is a really good active learner. She can easily pick up phrases when she listens to others communicating. E.g When Tzuyu communicates with her parents, she was able to pick up a few mandarin phrases just from hearing Tzuyu speak. And from a native Mandarin speaker perspective, she got her tone right, which is really difficult even for a Japanese or a Korean to get the tone right.

Please do Jun, The8, and Joshua from the group called SEVENTEEN. Jun and The8 are the Chinese members while Joshua is a pure Korean but who lives and born in LA who doesn’t know korean at all before joining the company. They only learned speaking korean while they’re still in their trainee years, and even though it’s been years i still find some cute mistakes and pronunciation from them. I’m not saying it’s bad though i just would like to see how Teacher Billy analyze their pronunciation, grammars, etc. stuffs ^^

한국어 능력 평가는 이 분이 보통 한국인들보다 잘하실듯 ㅋㅋ 한국어와 영어를 배울 수 있는 좋은 채널이네요.

As an esl teacher, reading and writing are the most complex things to teach in most languages. When you immerse yourself in another language it becomes easier to understand and speak the language daily because it becomes your life. But reading and writing is much more difficult!!

I find Sana impressive but all of them are so cool, I've learned four languages others than mine easily but I find korean pronunciation hard that it makes me give up easily so I learn to understand more but not for talking

I have been learning Korean completely by myself with no one to talk to so I spent a long time making sure I have the pronunciation correct. This nitpicking has confirmed that I did it right, thanks :D

the word 단위 is super interesting because in japanese, the word for "unit" is "単位(たんい)(tanni)" pronounced similarly to the korean word!! a lot of japanese and korean words have the same/similar pronounciations so it's really interesting and it helps me learn new vocabulary easier as a native japanese speaker haha you should look into felix from stray kids too! he's also from jype, he's a bit newer to korean but he is korean australian. (started learning in 2017 i think?) maybe bang chan too, also from stray kids and is an aussie! (he came to korea in 2010 but i'm pretty sure he spoke korean at home in aus)

As always, love these vids, Billy! As someone who learned Japanese as a child and is only recently learning Korean, I'm glad that you pointed out the specific differences between the languages. I'm also hoping that you'll someday pick Japanese up again, as you'll find that it's grammatically nearly 1:1 to Korean. In fact, once I realized how similar they were, I started mentally translating from Japanese rather than English, which I believe is speeding my path along to thinking natively in Korean without having to translate it first. Thanks, Billy! 고마워요!

I used to do that when I was first learning Korean - I'd sometimes think of things in Korean in terms of Japanese. However, this method doesn't work as perfectly as you might think. I actually made a video about that topic here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpzbkot3a7OahK8

Wow this is really interesting. They have learned the language well 😊. It could be interesting to see you look into Rocket Punch's Takahashi Juri. She is Japanese too and has been learning Korean from 2018, so it hasn't been that long. She also started the language learning in her adulthood 🤔.
