Graduation 2023 | Ingrid Pollard Honorary Speech | University of Gloucestershire

We are honoured to have Ingrid Pollard MBE, a celebrated British artist and photographer, as a speaker at our graduation ceremony this year.
Born in Guyana, Ingrid Pollard has made a profound impact on the art world, exploring themes of Britishness, race, sexuality, and identity through her work. Her innovative approach and unique perspective have been instrumental in redefining contemporary art and photography.
Ingrid first gained recognition in the 1980s with her groundbreaking series 'Pastoral Interludes,' which poignantly depicted black people in the British landscape. Her ability to blend social commentary with artistic expression has been a hallmark of her career.
Ingrid's recent solo exhibition, 'Carbon Slowly Turning,' was a cornerstone of her Turner Prize nomination last year. The exhibition, featuring hand-tinted landscapes, an installation of ceramic boats, and kinetic sculptures, included 'Sevent of Sixty Eight,' a powerful exploration of people of African descent in British life.
Ingrid's work is held in high esteem, collected by notable institutions such as the Arts Council Collection, the V&A, and the Tate. Her contributions to art were recognised this year with an MBE for services to art.
The University proudly awards Ingrid Pollard an Honorary Doctorate of Arts in recognition of her significant career in arts and photography. We are also deeply grateful for her inspiring support of our Photography programmes.
