Omfg I've been DYING for a Fireship video on telemetry and observability! Every time I tried to read into tools like OpenTelemetry and Prometheus has left me overwhelmed.
@catsmao53132 сағат бұрын
finally a topic I'm qualified to argue about. 4:37 You don't even need to write your own metric code for RED metrics since tempo has a built in component called metrics generator to extract that data from traces.
@Lethalcompanyfan59 минут бұрын
This sounds great as, someone who is learning code and working full time this would save a lot of stress and work for representing data from traces as to why programs or servers aren't working.

@titopowlo3 сағат бұрын
It is also worth considering that you might not need to know your compute metrics, but the most important is to know exactly what your customers/users are experiencing. Eg. traffic/latency/saturation of users, so your metrics are more actionable and useful instead of just seeing funny numbers going up and down. High CPU or RAM usage doesn't matter if your users feel that the system is fast.
@Crispy_Steak3 сағат бұрын
Yeah metrics are what I would look into last. I scrape my VM stats, but only look into them if I see an obvious anomaly in latency from my traces centered around a particular host or vm. I may check metrics once a week, but several times a day for traces because they are just superior metrics in aggregate.
@shmolyneaux2 сағат бұрын
You definitely need to watch CPU/RAM usage though. If you have a spike in latency because you're swapping memory you'll only know if you look at the RAM. If you find that RAM/CPU usage increases a lot with load on your server you'll be able to provision more servers ahead of the load rather than failing when that load comes.
@karlzone2Сағат бұрын
Yeah check out articles for the "Red method" or "four golden signals" to make better use of your metric funny numbers. Metrics are great for debugging, when you already know there's a problem, but usually it's hard to figure out that there is a problem in the first place without help from other types of telemetry.

For the last 2 day I have been trying to send my metrics from my nodejs app to Grafana cloud with alloy. Everything has been done but Grafana won't pick up my data. First issue, on the Grafana dashboard, the API key display a single "=" at the end of the key but you click copy to clipboard "==" is at the end of the API key During installation of Alloy Grafana automatic select "Add to fleet" but for the life of me, I still don't know what fleet is and the keyword "remotecfg" is not fully supported. Grafana is a great piece of software but it can get really confusing with all the options and experimentations the team behind it are doing without proper documentation. It is been 2 days, my Alloy debug UI says my configuration is fine. D Journctl is not logging any errors but there are no logs or metrics on the Grafana cloud dashboard. So frustrating

Day 1 of asking Fireship to do a video on the RPG language. Why? -The evolution from a punch card language to a ‘fully free’ language is fascinating -The storage of source code in what are essentially SQL tables (source physical files), or storage on a Linux-based file system -The ‘ILE’ or integrated language environment allowing you to compile multiple programming languages into a single program, and fairly easily swap out ‘modules’ or ‘service programs’ as needed. -Programs written and compiled decades ago being put onto an entirely different architecture and simply working without being recompiled due to their substantial MI-HAL There’s a lot of fascinating stuff about the IBM i/iSeries/AS400 that frankly is incredibly difficult to come across due to IBM’s astonishingly terrible SEO, along with their naming.
