Finally got around to grafting some fig trees and really glad I did. It was a lot of fun and through the grafting process I discovered a method that worked great and will definitely be in my grafting arsenal, chip bud grafting. I did 3 different grafts, whip and tongue, T budding, and a chip bud graft.
Chip budding is really easy to learn and it's hard to mess up! You can also do chip bud grafting on other fruit trees like apple, pear, etc and I'll be doing some of that in the future.
These fig trees are proving to be more and more fun to work with as they're so easy to propagate through cuttings or grafting, and they're also a fun winter hobby for gardeners!

Could you point me in the right direction of what is a good time to take fig cuttings? And how to do it
@MikeKincaid79

Fig cuttings are taken in the late fall or winter after the current years growth has gone dormant and hardened off. Although I have several videos about this, here's a good place to start: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6GTlJygqN-dgsU

I like it when you put the various clips from different dates and put them together in one video. I do not like to have to go back and watch the ones I forgot some of or never saw. I know it takes longer to get a video out but it is much appreciated!

Thanks, Zavia! I actually go to great lengths to make the videos this way for the reason you stated. I does take a lot of time though and I usually have several videos going at the same time before I finish them so my brain gets a little boggled trying to keep track of it all, lol. I appreciate that you appreciate it!

This is so awesome!! I’m excited and rooting for that little bud to grow grow grow! Love your videos! They’re what inspired me to attempt propagating my own fig cuttings and my first attempt with 8 cuttings resulted in 6 strong healthy trees. I’m hooked! Lol! I’ve always wanted to try grafting too but haven’t so far, so I’ll be watching your progress and learning. Thanks for doing these videos. I know you put in a lot of time and effort but they’re well done, very informative, and greatly appreciated!

Mike, what an enjoyable video! It gave me more knowledge on grafting. The first of last year, I saw a video by Dan Willey that interested me in trying to graft my Meyer Lemon. I contacted him; and he referred me to a Mr Krueger at the USDA-ARS National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Citrus & Dates (NCGR), who was going to send me some budwood to use in grafting my lemon tree. Even though I didn’t understand much about budwood and grafting, it was something that peaked my interested. Both Mr Willey and Mr. Krueger were so very helpful -and who knows; if it wasn’t for family illness, I may be a pro (hardly) by now! Shortly thereafter, when I was getting ready to work on learnng more and actually grafting the tree; my oldest sister became ill; and we found out she had/has cancer; then 6 days later; my oldest sibling passed out (no known reason at the time); went in a coma and a week later he died. Three weeks later I broke my shoulder. With all that going on; as much as I am sure that I would have enjoyed the process of grafting -I put it way, way on the back burner. After seeing this video of yours; although I don’t understand the process completely; I am regaining an interest in it again. Now that I have a Fig tree and 3 air-layered ones from it; after seeing this video, I may have to try my hand at grafting a Fig tree -using a Bud Graft. Thank you so much for the video and sparking my interest in learning more about the process; and hopefully I will be grafting one of my trees in the near future.

Fig is my latest passion Mike. I am still at beginners stage. Neighbor has black mission tree and I can't wait to propogate it. I can BUY a tree at store but what fun is that ? Anyway I am,trying out few methods I have seen on youtube and I am getting some of them to root. You won't believe how excited i was to see couple of them sprouting. Can't wait to see it grow into big trees. Still early and ill have to figure out when to up pot them from starbucks cup. Don't have room for them in ny yard but I'll give them to friends and family and only keep one. I learn a lot from you and I thank you for it Mike.

Man I missed a lot very good video. Working 60 to 70 hours in hot addicts Must have made me miss things. I don't know how because I had the Bell on. I try to watch your videos very interested in propagation. And into grafting haven't had a lot of success with grafting yet. Or air layering. Sooner or later I will.

I did some dormant black Madeira bud grafts on panache dormant cuttings. All the buds are swelling and growing nicely and now I’m waiting to see some roots.

CDD Blanc has been a very difficult fig to root on it's own for me so consider a different rootstock. I went just now to LSU Purple for a number of reasons. A couple months ago, I grafted RDB, Black M, and Smith onto an Adriatic JH. The upper bud, RDB is about 6" now. The other two are budded similar to your BM. I think two things here. BM is a total bitch to grow and root and the buds were lower so apical growth is dominating. I have my "frankenfig" in my heated grow room.

Hi Mike, Just wondering, did both varieties branch out on that smith/madeira graft?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 6 жыл бұрын
Yes! I got a nice branch from the Smith and a smaller branch from the Black Madeira. Both were healthy and leaved out this summer. I'm crossing my fingers and praying that both take off and continue growing in the spring.

@@MikeKincaid79 Thats so cool! be sure to post an update video. Do you ever sell cuttings? I'm interested in both Smith and Black Madeira if you have any. I have some Brown Turkey figs that I have been learning on, and want to branch out a bit.

I sell rooted cuttings on Ebay. I root them first because I want to make sure people get something for their hard earned money and you can't always guarantee a cutting will root. I may sell cuttings in the future but will make sure they're big and fresh cuttings to give people the best chances of rooting.

very interesting and very informative, mike. i never tried to graft. you were very skillful in your approach. if you don't succeed try, try again. you'll do it, i know. i like the vasilika. how about trying a graft and filling gaps with honey then wrap. exciting!!!

Kurt Lamprecht This channel is all about trying new things and experimenting. Without that, we'd still be living in caves, lol. By the way, I'm sure you know that honey has been used for thousands of years as a rooting hormone. Before you get roots, the callus forms. Grafting uses the same principle except that same callous from each plant grows into each other. So why wouldn't honey work. Now I feel challenged to make it happen, thanks.
