Womack Nursery sells both. I do a lot of grafting every year because I have a pecan orchard. They have the Tina brand knives which I think are the best. All their tools are very high quality. They make right hand and left hand knives so make sure you get the proper one.
@JSacadura5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Greg. Will do. Regarding Parafilm, I buy mine in Amazon. Search for "Parafilm Nursery Grafting Tape". As for the grafting knife... You will have a tough time trying to buy one identical. These are made in Portugal by the craftsman Gilberto Aveleda (navalhasmirandesas.com/index.php/produtos/facas-gilberto-ferreira-aveleda), in a small town, called Palaçoulo (know for their knife making craftsmen). But i also graft with the more common Vitorinox models and they do the job. Or you can buy some from Tina, as James is suggesting.
@jamesbarron12024 жыл бұрын
@@JSacadura Womack also sells the Victorinox knives. The Tina is a better quality knife put you'll pay for it. I also have, other than my regular Tina, a double bladed Tina Patch Bud knife that my deceased uncle passed down to me, he bought back in I'm guessing the 1940s. My most expensive knife I own.

I've seen people put parafilm over a graft and then firmly secure it with an electrical tape. The electrical tape is fairly stiff, but also has a little bit of flexibility. Thanks for the video! Excellent explanation as usual.
@JSacadura4 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for your comments. Electrical tape is a valid alternative, used on its own, and many people use it. I just don't like to use it very much as it may introduce unknown adhesives (depending on the brand) in those delicate cut tissues, so i prefer other more inert alternatives. Also, the materials that i am using let the graft breathe while keeping the scion moisture in (namely the Parafilm). Covering it with electrical tape would be detrimental to that objective.

Hola!

In some cases it's almost inevitable to collect them ahead and store them in the fridge. Just wrap them in plastic kitchen film an store them in the vegetable drawer of the fridge. They will be okay for a couple of months. I sometimes receive scions from friends in December and graft them in March. They work just fine.

What is a scion? I want to take my existing guava tree and graft it? What is a scion that I can use? thank you for educating me
@JSacadura4 жыл бұрын
A scion is a young shot or twig from a plant that will be used for grafting into a rootstock. Ideally, scions are cut one year branches of trees of good varieties and must have 2 or 3 buds.
@graceloong34074 жыл бұрын
@@JSacadura , thank you for the great video, and explained the requirements for choosing the right scions (i.e., one year old healthy branches). Would you also clarify how to select the right branch from the root stock for the new graft? Does the select branch from the root stock also need to be 1 year old and lignified in brown color? What if the branch is a few years old and already turned to grey color? Thanks!

The grafting fruits Trees technique it's using a young plant fig cutting to put in a old plant to develop more fruits? Or reverse, put old cutting to new (young) plant to have mature fruit with nice colors? Why do we use these methods? I would like to learn more or understand more about plants. Thank you very much to answer.
@Eddiegamer917 ай бұрын
* When you say a 1-year-old scion, do you mean that the scion is cut from a branch that was at least 1 year old, or do you mean the scion was cut and stored in the refrigerator for a year? * And so as a follow-up, I was wondering how you guarantee all the fruit is coming from the tree you want. But as I'm watching through the video I think it's becoming clear. Can you let me know if I'm understanding this correctly? You first start by cutting off all of the competing buds that are closer to the roots, because they take up more energy on the way up the tree. You then cut most of the competing buds near the top, because while they take up less energy, too many will effectively "drown" the new competition. You keep around a few of the top ones because the new bud is not strong enough on its own to pull resources up the tree. Finally, once you've confirmed the new bud is in place, and growing, you remove all of the competing buds of the old tree, and that guarantees that all of the fruit buds left are the buds you want? * And how many buds do you chip bud onto a single root stock to guarantee that it will grow enough fruit in the future?

We have a lot of mahaleb trees in my country- Croatia- Mediterranean part. I used to graft cherry to really small mahaleb rootstock and I used raffia cause it allows me better controloc and tigthly grip in the contaact between rootstock and scions, and covered it with electrical tape. In July I saw that my graft was getting strangled so I released it . I am afraid after 3 weeks if I release it I will break the graft union. Is the fear real?

@JSacadura4 жыл бұрын

What a fantastic video! Thank you so much ! When is the right time to graft a fig tree?
@pelicanovacaciones3 жыл бұрын
@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын

Very interesting video with details and all the info. Question: For south Greece (Mediterranean climate) when is the best time to do the Grafting for figs? Early spring on middle of the winter? I will appreciate if you answer to me. Thanks
@JSacadura4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Tasos. I would graft in late winter/early spring. Just when the trees start coming out of dormancy and just before they start growing leaves. That way the grafts have time to adapt and grow before the higher temperatures come by. You can graft later, but you have to protect the grafts from the sun. You can also graft in the fall, but then you will have to protect them from the winter and they will stop growing until next spring.

Hace 1 segundo Hola buenas noches.
@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын
Hola.

What are your 2 favorite figs for taste from the types that dont need to be pollinated? I don't have fig wasp in my area. Theres an Italian guy within an hours drive that sells 130 varieties and I'm wanting to plant quite a few and would like your opinion on taste. I hope they can survive our north Texas winters. I have a huge Celeste tree and love them

Hi, James. I have several good tasting figs that i like that don't need to be pollinated. Two of my favorite are Moscatel Branco (a honey type fig) and Preto de Torres Vedras (a local small black fig), but there are many others that are also very good. Regarding winter... We sometimes have colder winters (reaching -5 ºC in some years and my trees have no problem with it, some will resist even colder temperatures for a couple of weeks).

@@JSacadura thanks! Hopefully he has those. I'm going to get his opinion also on some others to try. I have a bare 3 acres that I'd like to plant into a fig orchard. I have 4 acres of pecans already that I sell. I'm in peak harvest season right now. I'm in very sandy soil and I guess it's good because my Celeste tree is huge. I dehydrate them then freeze them to last thru the year. Birds are my biggest problem with growing figs. I'd love to see a video of your fig types and favorites.
