In the previous video here on Flock, we had a delightful tour of Coldwater Pond Nursery's collection of rare ornamental trees and shrubs. Instead of bringing in nursery stock, Ted Hildebrandt and team actually graft and grow out all of their plants. In fact, they are one of the few grafting nurseries left on the east coast.
Ted was kind enough to share one of their grafting techniques-even though grafting takes place during the winter months.

I've watched a lot of grafting videos and this was the most concise and clearest explanation I've seen. Thank you!

I learned about that cutter a few days ago on Herons Bonsai, which I have been watching along with yours. Love to garden, can never learn too much.

I know! I'm so thankful. They've made me see trees in a completely different way along this Flock Journey of mine. So fascinating.

I'll never have any practical application for this kind of knowledge but it definitely changes the way I see any managed landscape (which is most.) Such ingenuity. Thanks.

Oh no. I feel like getting a pair of those concave cutters and running out to the garden experimenting. I see this escalating very fast. Will there be any trees left after I'm done...

He makes it look so simple. I mean, the concept IS simple. But when I've tried it, I feel like I'm doing surgery!

Very interesting. We had a family who owned an orchard, they've all passed away now, but they were grafting experts. He had cut walnut trees and grafted pecan trees on top. When I saw them they were fully grown. His sister told me that this type of graft was supposed to be impossible. The trees were marvellous to look at with the two different colours of the bark. Unfortunately, the property was sold to the city and they cut down the trees that lined the driveway into the property. I believe that was unnecessary and a huge shame.
