can be grafted pecan trees into usual wallnut trees (juglans regia)?
@Larry3425168 жыл бұрын
Does it have to be a nut tree of some type that you are grafting the Scion onto? Or, can you use any type of tree in the area? Thank you for the video.

I have this same question. Can I use a shade tree example for my trunk and graft a pecan scion wood onto the shade tree ? Will this work to produce pecans?
@solfeinberg4376 жыл бұрын
I dunno Honey, but that would sure be cool. Get a jump start. Instead of replacing trees, you could just springboartd them into what you want! I was thinking of this for those ornamental pear trees - with another variety of pear. Or multiple apple varieties on a single apple tree, for instance. But what you're asking is even better. We do have lots of wild walnut trees - maybe I could graft pecans onto them or a nice cultivar of walnuts!

question, though you dont seem to answer them... what would be the point of this exactly? I always thought you would graft to have more than one species on a tree, like the tree of 40 fruits, but then you talked about removing the lower branches later...so is it just for the hearty root structure? I just cant imagine wanting to turn a pecan tree into a walnut tree :)

Good Question, by grafting a shoot (scion) containing buds from desirable stock to the native trees-they turn these less productive seedlings into some of the best adapted, productive trees because pecans will not reproduce true from seeds, growers can’t just plant a good quality pecan nut and get a pecan tree like its parents.
@magdalene7410 жыл бұрын
OKGardeningClassics Ok, and thank you for answering me, so here is another... that being the case... why not graft PECANS onto the pecan trees, would you not end up with well adapted productive pecan trees in less time this way?
@attrezzopox9 жыл бұрын
Summer Noybn It comes down to root stock. It may be that the pecan is better adapted to his local conditions than a walnut, or perhaps there is a disease or pest that walnut roots are prone to in his area. It might even be as simple as him having a number of established pecans. Seeing as it takes years for the root stock to establish it may have simply been cheaper to use existing pecans rather than plant walnuts and wait for them to grow. There can be a good number of reasons to choose to graft a completely separate species to a rootstock.

From what I understood it, when you graft from a mature Fruiting pecan branch (scion) to a younger tree seedling . The graft mature (scion ) of the Fruiting pecan tree will take over and Fruit since it was from a mature tree. It will use the seedling as its trunk only. ( otherwise ) the seedling tree will take (many years 5-10 years) to actually produce and the fruit will be smaller .
