I had an idea for new lore for a reworked Gragas where he is one of the last Hearthblood who goes on a journey through Runeterra to create the greatest beer that mortal hands can make to gain the favour of Ornn. That would also open him up to other things, like canonically meeting and becoming friends with Jax, maybe even joining his team to fight the void since as a Hearthblood, their goals would align since Ornn built the howling abyss. Edit: This is possible now that Legends of Runeterra will be fully canon, which revealed that the Hearthblood are starting to make a resurgence as Ornn regains followers. So let me rephrase: Not one of the last Hearthblood, one of the few.

no you're right, tham, while playing into the fatness as shorthand for greed, is a design that doesn't make his fatness a joke or something to be disgusted with, managing to make him feel powerful and imposing in a way gragas is very much not what I think they could easily do with keeping gragas as a comedic character is to focus the joke on his drunkness and maybe obliviousness, having him stroll into fights like they're parties and offering people a drink, more stumbling giant than disgusting fatso

It's storytelling inside of the character design. Obviously, you see a fat catfish with a silly little hat and think: "Hey, he looks kinda funny." However, you can also see an underlying depth, e.g. in his eyes. His design makes you ask yourself: "What is his deal? Who is he?". Also, his big jaw shows you that Tahm Kench is indeed strong, or capable. That is, well, everything that Gragas is missing. Both are on the funnier side, but Tahm isn't defined by "This Character is fat." Tahms weight is a part of his story, while Gragas doesn't really have one.

Gragas seems usually more to Obelix to me cause of how he is portrayed. Never really see him being fat as a negative. It's more of you aren't sure if you're suppose to take someone like Gragas serious due to him being fat til he starts kicking your ass. Personally, he needs a ASU like ASAP after Teemo and Lee Sin.

The thing about Obelix is: Yes, Obelix is a bit of an idiot and his design is made so they can make fat jokes, but Obelix has a lot of qualities as well. He‘s loyal, he helps and protects his friends and village, he has a business, he takes good care of his dog and most of all: He‘s incredibly strong, even more so than other people when they drink the magic potion Obelix is just a force of nature. All these things make him sympathetic, cool, aspirational. He is a fat, dumb oaf, but his character isn‘t restricted to that. Gragas is a fat, dumb oaf and that‘s all there is to him.

I think they should already say (if they didn’t do this already) that Iceborns are immune or resistant to the cold in the Freljord. There is just too many naked characters there with Ashe, Udyr, Braum , Gragas, Tryndamere, Olaf etc.

The reason why "chubby" Soraka doesn't work is because she is giving even when she doesn't have anything to spare. She is practically skin-and-bones, frail-looking, wears thin clothing, and yet she *STILL* gives of herself to the point that it literally hurts her. That idea gets lost if the character doing it looks like they live comfortably and eat well.

i think the idea is to give her that friendly maternal chub. still, motherly women being chubby is becoming trite and cliche in its own right, especially in these kinds of "fan redesign" ideas. if anything soraka should look borderline anorexic. same thing with chubby ashe. that body type does not suit her at all, and just plays into the "all maternal attractive women have to look chubby instead" idea

Your Soraka redesign really reminded me of what happened to Alexstraza in Heroes of the Storm. Similar archetype, but she went from generically thin to much more of a thiccer body (though I wouldnt say chubby for her. More like...heavy set?)

As a brazilian, I am personally offended that Nicholas J. Boi of the NickyBoi KZbin channel has dared to offend one of the best characters in the whole damn game. Memes aside, though, Gragas is absolutely beloved over here, so it sucks to see you dislike his design so much. As a gragas main I will say that I think the short story does paint gragas in a sort of more serious light, like he is truly a master of his craft and so can tell when he’s being tricked. In game he just acts like a bumbling oaf, but at least the short shows a different side to gragas. I honestly think in the mmo he could serve as an interesting side quest character where you have to like find all the special ingredients for his beer or something, and riot could take the opportunity to expand on that different side of gragas. Also vandal gragas is actually a pretty cool skin that turns him more like roadhog in terms of looks (not voice lines unfortunately). In general he could definitely do with a new voiceover.

My personal thoughts on soraka not being a heavier or even a medium-sized character mainly due to the idea that she is burning away constantly. I understand the idea of a mother like figure or a caretaker but my immediate thoughts is that if she is burning this form away stain it because she is that powerful there shouldn't be that much of a body there.

Rather than replying to any single comment, generally to anyone who thinks a character should not be fat due to "insert character trait here" -- There are fat people who are frail in real life. There are fat people who do not live comfortably or eat enough, there is fat people of all kinds. You could make any manner of excuses for why any character should not be fat that does not hold weight when you can find any person in real life who is fat and similar. Strong, weak, kind, mean, we really need to stop making body weight some sort of direct translation to a character's personality when there are a million other things about a character design that can translate it just as well. People just want to see themselves and be seen, is that hard to empathize with? Like that's easily more important than one single *perceived* facet of a character.

I got into LoL very recently. I only knew like 5 characters (Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Jinx and Vi). I‘ve heard stories about how awful Gragas was, but I’ve never actually seen him before. Neither his in-game model, nor his splash art. I had the „pleasure“ of seeing his splash art before his in-game model. When I first saw it, I was like „hey, this isn’t actually all that bad. Maybe people are just overreacting“. I thought he looked kinda cool, actually. Like Thor in GOW Ragnarok (or rather a mythologically accurate Thor)… and then I saw his in-game model. That he was basically just „haha, funny blob man. Look at how fat he is, isn’t it soooooo funny 😂😂😂😂😂 lmao XD XD XD 🤪🤪🤪🤪“. I thought he was gonna be like the Drunkard mini-bosses from Sekiro, or, again, a mythologically accurate Thor. Slow, and lumbering. Maybe not all that emotionally intelligent (because of all the drinking), but you know that, if he gets his hands on you, you’ll be in trouble. But, no. He was just a walking fat joke. And, like, there’s no problem with joke characters. Not everyone has to be some über powerful warrior or anything. Joke characters can work, if the joke that’s being delivered is actually funny or clever. Like Sett, the stereotypical gangster character, being a mama’s boy, Kayn actually being more unhinged than the demon who’s possessing him, or something like Corporate Mundo. Sure, those aren’t the most creative concepts out there, but they still work. Those things still make me chuckle. But Gragas… is neither of those things. What Riot did with him is neither funny, NOR clever. It’s literally just „he‘s funny, because he’s fat and gross“

You can even have him be silly but in a sorta merry jokester guy who is charismatic and cool. Keep him fat, give him some real clothes, and make him stop being a fat joke and more of a friendly fat bartender who will lift your spirits while serving you spirits.

That... actually kinda works, imo. He'd definitely fit into the ideology of pursuing your own passions and living in the moment. But I think if that part of his personality were to be preserved, he wouldn't be interesting enough of an addition, y'know? Like, I feel like a champion connected to some faction should, ideally, reveal a new or different part of said faction, play on their representation somewhat. And Illaoi already represents this kind of very "life-loving", fun, brawly Buhru person. I think it'd be fun to see a Buhru representative who's more about being wary of outsiders and somewhat stoic, like some of the folk in the Ruined King game. Anyhow, that was all off topic. Gargas is weird and doesn't fit.

I'm not quite sure on Graggy being a Buhru, but if nothing else it could show one that calls on Nagakabouros in a different manner than the Tentacles she's assosiated with

This is a stretch and an obscure comparison maybe, but I'm watching Fairy Tail right now and there's a character named Bacchus, his whole deal is basically being a drunk, but they designed him so well and he's a really likable character. If riot did something like him with Gragas, I think he could be a really good champion.

Im guessing that the reason why Gragas is seemingly unphased by the cold is based on the same mode of thought as that story about the survivor of the Titanic who supposedly managed to survive in the frigid waters long enough to get to safety because he was drunk. The version of the story I was told as a kid was that the alcohol helped maintain his body heat, but in actuality, he was just so blitzed that it kept his body from panicking or going into shock when it logically would have, be it on the boat, or when coming into contact with the shockingly cold waters. The funny thing is that, if this is in fact where part of the back story inspiration came from, then its hilariously wrong on both levels, since alcohol doesn't help you survive the cold, and Gragas can't even get drunk so that he can ignore it XD Congrats, Riot, you played yourself :P

They just need to give him a spunky kid that follows him around, give him a Troll orphan kid that got left behind when Trundle rallied a tribe or some troll kid from Jax's race something and he just goes on adventures with this kid. Make Gragas raised by trolls or something or he integrates into a Troll tribe because their regeneration allows them to drink copious amounts of really strong alcohol and he can actually keep up with them and have some really potent booze and his strength and love of alcohol makes the tribe accept him then they get rolled over by Trundle after refusing to join him and Lissandra then he adopts this last survivor troll kid and goes on adventures with this kid to make them happy and see the world. Then we have a reason for him to wear a loin cloth and i literally just ripped this entire shit off of what Warcraft did with Chen, take the fat drunk panda character and give him a spunky niece to explore the world 15 years later

I've thought at times about how Gragas could be redesigned to fit better, both lore and looks, and one idea I thought of was to still keep him fat, still keep the alcohol and him being jolly, but instead of having us laugh at him because he is fat and drunk, he should have us laugh with him. When I look at his lore and his character I think of someone who is the life of the party, someone you look at and go "hey, he knows how to have fun!". Basically make him part of the Freljord and have him stumble upon a shard of true ice, but have him be from the south, where people live more comfortably which would in turn explain why he is on the bigger side. Have him be fascinated by alcohol, and wanting to be a brewmaster and since he is in the south he probably has access to a wider variety of imported ingredients, instead of just wanting to get piss drunk. As for looks I'd say the key parts that identify him visually are his size, his beard, and his casket. First off, give him some clothes, at least a pair of pants and boots, and cover the lower part of his belly with the pants. A disdented belly flopping out like that just gives this sloppy, disgusting look, so keeping his belly tucked inside his pants would already help a LOT. Then maybe give him some signature Freljordian tattoos instead of those odd markings he has. Next, have his beard be braided more intricately, smoothes and brushed but still big and long. It shows he grooms himself, that he looks after himself and cares about his looks, this lessens the drunken oaf vibes. You can keep him bald too. And last but not least, do not show him looking violent, or sloppy, or drunk, instead show him happy, smilling, jovial, make him look like he is the best guy you can hang out with. That's what I at least think an ideal visual and lore touch up for him should be. We should laugh with him, not at him.

Gragas is fat because Riot wants to show that no matter how much nobody plays him, nobody appreciates him, he's still one of the champions that'll eventually get given a rework to make him look great like he does in wildrift. But unlike corki, hillbilly gragas is just hilarious and makes so much more goofy sense for his old model. (I swear I don't have a bias because gragussy from Tobias Fate)

And yes, being an alcoholic is an ilness, I'd rather ridicule alcohol usage, to discourage people from doing it, than to ridicule being overweight.

I feel like 70% of the lol community are laughing at the fat joke and it's why he doesn't show up on lists of most hated champs despite doing like 2000 damage in a 2 button combo with a dash knock up hitbox the size of sion Q and if he doesn't go AP he can easily be one of the most obnoxious and hard to kill tanks in the game. Almost everything about him is annoying to me. Also his only 2 non joke skins are generic medieval armour and military aesthetic.

I mean, that is why i like this character. The first time i started playing league way back, i remember the first question i asked my friend was "Who is the fattest most disgusting character" and he showd me gragas. I have been playing him since then. And yes i agree, he could do with a modern aesthetic and finally some lore or personality. But to me, the fat, drunken man throwing kegs around idea is what appeals to me. Funny you mentioned Roadhog, because that is the only other character that sold me a game instantly.

I wish they'd celebrate Gragas's body type more. Keep him chonky but make him a hearty fun party character who keeps peace via drinking. I always liked bopping champs with him. At least he's different and doesn't want to be one of the many rail-thin anime main character clones the game has. He's a bit gross and uncouth, but why not have a champ like him in the game? It's fun and gives some variety. We need more gross characters. More Grag, Cho and Kog, less Kai'sa, Yone and Gwen.

It could be fun of they leant in towards the whole Brewster aspect and made so having Gragas on your team grant you access to exclusive potions that are brews he created that have different effects. IE: a smooth Ionian-inspired wine that grants movement speed and gain mana from killing, a sharp Noxian-inspired whisky that grants attack damage and let's your first ability on a enemy champion deal burning damage, etc.
