You can tell that Chelsea truly isn’t looking for praise when she talks about how she’s comfortable with her salary, would donate a significant amount to charity, start non profits. She genuinely wants to help others. I feel the same way if I’m ever lucky enough to be in that position.

“Anyone can become rich” is true in the way that anyone can win the lottery. A few individuals certainly can become wealthy, but on balance most people are impacted by the circumstance of their birth. For instance, I grew up in a home with mental illness. Almost every bit of money I earned as a teenager went to support the family mostly because my mother could not control her spending. As a gen-xer I was also fed the lie that you have to have a college degree to have any value in our society, but had no access to resources to help me pay for school due to the mental illness. Thus, my prime wealth building years (20-30) were wasted in a fruitless pursuit of an expensive and useless degree.
@2012withShantelleS
@2012withShantelleS 3 жыл бұрын
Fair points. You could also have chosen to be more selfish and hoarded your earnings. It's not the kind of thing society lauds but it certainly is an option. While society celebrates the ivy college degree, that "useless" paper could have been gotten more affordably with Community College credits. Just you know, thoughts.
@amyhaggerty1
@amyhaggerty1 3 жыл бұрын
@@2012withShantelleS all true. I did go to a state school as I did when I got a masters, so I spent less, but not zero. I just feel that the push towards college only is very misguided and I am glad to see that starting to change. College is not for everyone.

A great insight into how Chelsea views society is how she explains the "crabs in the bucket" metaphor. From Wikipedia: The analogy in human behavior is claimed to be that members of a group will attempt to reduce the self-confidence of any member who achieves success beyond the others, out of envy, resentment, spite, conspiracy, or competitive feelings, to halt their progress. Chelsea explains it as everyone try to achieve success individually but others end up hindering the success of others in the process to achieving their own success. It's either we succeed as society together or everyone fails because the collective success of society matters more than the success of the individual.

Regarding gifts: I generally ask everyone to not buy me birthday or holiday gifts, but instead to do something to help someone else, and tell me what they did if they wish. That way lots more people receive blessings than I could help myself. My friends feel good for helping others, and I feel good when I hear what they did, so everybody wins. Some of the gifts I got for my birthday this year were friends cooking special meals for sick people, neighbours or family, giving rides to doctor appointments, sewing and knitting for charities like children's services and hospitals, sending impromptu care packages to others, volunteering at their local place of worship, and even one friend who gave a morning of breakfast, babysitting and a free Chinese lesson to a neighbour and her daughter who don't have a car. That was my best birthday yet! I'm so proud of my friends, and grateful for every act of kindness they did! I hope that everyone who reads this will be inspired to come up with their own ideas! 💜🤗🤗👍

In terms of gift giving we give experiences now - eg the kids got me a truck driving lesson. I'm currently working a job that took me over 2 years to get because I'm 54 and the employment market is very tricky at this age. It has now given me the opportunity to pay rent and eat which is great but also concentrate on other streams of income. I've lost everything in my 50's and believe absolutely that I have plenty of time to get it all back before I retire - and if I don't it will be like watching a car crash - again. Thanks for this discussion it was really great.
