Niki Lauda explains how his grandfather tried to force Niki to continue the legacy of working in the family business and even handicapped Niki’s first Formula 1 sponsorship, yet the family backlash just further fueled Niki’s motivation to succeed on his own.

Nikki Lauda is possibly the best example of what Immanuel Kant calls the "good will". The intelligent application of will combined with consideration of all people associated with or dependent on him. James Hunt competed merely to win, for the fame. Nikki competed to prove that his understanding of what it took to be a champion was superior. A fierce competitor, Nikki was never greedy.

Despite not having a good relationship with his grandfather, the most derogatory word Niki used to describe his grandfather was "old-fashioned". But other than that, he still describes his grandfather as very intelligent and industrious, so there was still a form of respect. These days, self-entitled kids just hate their parents and grandparents for disagreeing with them in the most petty things. Sad how quickly basic family values have devolved, especially now with the reality-TV era glamourisng dysfunctional families.
@dutchmilk

I agreed. The times we live in, youngsters are quick to blame anyone and degrade them to the lowest as soon as possible without thinking for a second the why, what, how of the situation. They forgot who worked to put them to school, give them what they had growing up. Mr Lauda, while rich, have the abilities to respect a man who earn his right to be respected.

Nonsense. This has nothing to do with what generation it is. I’m sure when Niki was young, he would have maybe disagreed over petty things with his family as well. It’s all about age and has got nothing to do which generations of kids there is. The majority of kids who hates their family over petty things right now will come around to respect them as they mature. Just like it has always been. Youth is youth. Stop jumping on the bandwagon and blaming it on the generation, young people have always been like this and young people have always gone onto mature and they will continue to do so.

Life is about perspective. Yes it sucks that his grandfather didn't have his back, but he still grew up wealthy, and was raised with high regard for himself. I'll bet you if Niki Lauda grew up the son of trailer trash in the rural Midwest United States he would have been a shadow of what he was.
