Agreed, and we tried to be those parents. Parenting like that and stick together couples were venerated in pop culture in the 50s and 60s. Today they are disparaged and even vilified, not only in movies and video shorts but in government and institutions. My daughter has a 3yo and she has a greater hurdle against the pop norms today than we had in the 00s...and there were a lot of antiparenting pressures in the 00s too.

They ended up using the Rifleman and Mark formula for Andy and Opie. Often the conflict was caused by a misunderstanding or a wrong guess by one or the other, typically Dad. Then at the end he realized his son was a really great kid. Desilu had the brat squad of child actors...precocious wise crack kids that could get a cheap laugh. Those usually played Opie's friends

The timing of this video is perfect since it was only yesterday that I made the drive over to Mount Airy, NC from Pilot Mountain State Park and visited the Andy Griffith museum. Ron, Andy, Don, they were family to me. I was the one who changed over the years and my perspective changed but they always stayed the same. Ron was the perfect image of a son growing up in the 50's, Andy was the perfect image of a dad and a sheriff, and Don was the perfect foil to remind us that it was our imperfections and the struggles to overcome them that made us what we are. When the realities of life get a little too intense for me I turn to the show and think to myself "how would Andy handle this?" or I say to myself "don't handle this the way Barney would." The Andy Griffith show is a great example of what we humans can do when we collaborate. There was some awesome talent behind the show, but if any one of them had allowed their ego's to rise up and take control, the show would never have been as successful as it was and still is.

Ron's Dad understood things like honesty and simplicity in telling a story. People today probably consider that boring. But the real magic of bringing a great TV, stage or film production to life and giving it any real longevity is telling the truth in the writing. It all begins with the story. If you tell it the right way you reach people. If the story/writing isn't there all you have is window dressing. You can have the best actors, crew and production staff but if the writing isn't there you end up with crap that isn't worth watching.

Graham - thanks for the WAY you interview. So many times, interviewers will make statements or pontificate their point of views and I don't see that here (or in any of the interviews you've done). You're there, your presence is know but you ask a (the) question and then back off and let the celebrity (show biz, sports) go from there. You might interject a thought or a life event to get the person to elaborate on what they're saying and then let them continue. I think that's rare.

One of the interesting stories which showed how his father, and Andy, treated him like a child and not a star. Ron was having a bad day on set and acting like a brat. He was called out on it, the behavior didn't change, so his father calmly walked on set, pulled Ron to the side and thoroughly spanked him. After he stopped blubbering and was back on set, Andy leaned over to him and said, "You know you earned that, don't you?" One of the events which kept Ron grounded.
@robyndismon394 Жыл бұрын
Such a confederate, poorly developed mindset. I disagree with you on ALL levels. Ron did not 'earn' a spanking. He didn't need to hit his child . He chose to hit him and as a result felt perfectly justified to do so. There were a plethora of ways that situation could have been handled
@christophermccarthy884 Жыл бұрын
@Robyn Dismon you're entitled to do so. Though it's amusing to me that Ron Howard agrees with me...not you. Success involves understanding risk and consequences. ignoring how pain is a great teacher, especially when we are too young to understand self-sacrifice and self-discipline is just foolish. The trick is removing emotion or variability from the equation. NEVER spank when angry, ALWAYS give a warning that a line is being crossed and it's a punishment rarely used, but extremely effective.
@robyndismon394 Жыл бұрын
@@christophermccarthy884 American slavery was effective as well. Sure as hell doesn't make it right, moral, or ethical. Controlled violence is still violence. Plain and simple. And you said 'thoroughly' spanked. As in leaving bruises?
@christophermccarthy884 Жыл бұрын
@Robyn Dismon You are mistaking violence for a punishment. When you grab a hot pan on the stove, is that violence? No, and you learn not to do that very quickly. The secret is removing emotion and negotiation from the experience. You explain to your child simple cause and effect. If you do this, A will happen. Period. If it's a behavior problem, you warn them they are at the point of earning a spanking, and they need to moderate it now. Ron was warned. If its a matter of safety, you make them safe and inform them they earned a spanking. It can be difficult for many to separate out the emotion. The answer is to wait. You tell your child they have earned a spanking. Go to your room and wait until I calm down as I will not hit you while angry. Interestingly, my children all agreed that the wait was the most memorable part of the experience. As to your rude statement about bruising. That's a no. Bare hand on bare bottom is painful enough to make the child wish to avoid repeating the experience while doing no damage that is not gone in a day. If it doesn't hurt, the child will tough it out instead of just avoid it. The goal is for a child to avoid this...not get used to it. None of my children needed more than 8 spankings in their lives. They DID, however, need the ones they earned. And now that they are all successful adults, they agree....just as Ron Howard agreed.
@robyndismon394 Жыл бұрын
@@christophermccarthy884 I don't need a thesis statement sweetie. Couldn't careless what you, Ron OR Andy think, feel or do regarding children and physical punishment. If you hit a child you've lost control. And it most certainly IS violent.Children don't 'earn' spankings. You've been both horribly and successfully programmed. And by virtue of your self righteous rant may I also add that a myriad of specialists dedicated to childhood development, have been sharing this information for decades. You sound old, predictable and stagnant.
