Dear Graham and Hazel you are not alone you have over 15000 friends. Feel the love and support. Model Railways saved my life when my wife and twin boys died. It was hard but I managed to pull through with Mental health team and tablets lifting my spirits. Don't let the B's get you down. Your layout and car is Fantastic. A lot of people are jealous. You Your Lady and Family are the most important and precious people in the world Graham. I send my best wishes and love. Take care Richard Canterbury

You Sir are a brave man. For anyone to bare their soul as you have done is incredible. Everyone has a breaking point, everyone, the key to surviving it is how you look at yourself, how you treat yourself. Your a strong man Graham, a skilled man, anyone can see that, I personally can only aspire to the layout you have created, but I will, because you did. Have some time away, right away from social media, lets face it, there's nothing social about it. Kind regards to you and your lovely wife, I hope you can find a way back. Thank you.

Seven years ago my lovely wife was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour, she died after an 18 month battle and at that point two lives ended, that was five years ago. When she was ill I stumbled across your channel I had no knowledge of model railways or any interest in them however because of that your channel has been a complete escape from reality and has been extremely beneficial to me at those times when there is only darkness at the end of the tunnel. Thank you.

A very emotional and heartfelt video Graham and one that brought back memories of my own moment…. Now thankfully quite some years ago. I like no doubt a number of your other subscribers don’t have a model railway and whilst into modelling both look forward to and in wonderment at the world you and other You Tubers have created and continue to develop. Your imagination and the modelling skills that you so freely share give so much inspiration to many. I do obviously watch a number of your colleagues and their layouts and it seems that as an outsider looking in they to seem to have been plagued by both ‘the gatekeeper’s’ the obsessive rivet counters and the inept. We all know that many of these individuals seem to fit a certain profile and whilst in better times their statements are treated with the contempt they deserve, when we’re either in or slipping into a dark place the comments can have a disproportionate impact…..they do say that a negative is stronger than a positive. For what it’s worth you have a great channel great skills and a lovely way of putting it across…..15,000+ subscribers kinda says it for me. Your subscribers will be here for you when, and only when you feel up to returning…….your personal health and that of your good lady is the most important. Graham, keep safe and enjoy the step back. Kindest Regards Gary

You’ve been through a lot Graham. I don’t know what to say or what to advise because mental health is a complete unknown to me , but I do understand where you are coming from . All I can say is I wish you all the very best for the future . Sincerely I think you should get some help . I think you are a long way from going into hospital , so I’d consult your GP who should be able to refer you to a psychiatrist . But as I said I know very little about this . Could there be some support groups around ? There will be people who know better than me . All the best

I would love to see these people try to even attempt to make this intrecate layout as you have done . It is truly amazing , and the manhole is so so good , wanderful thinking . It all adds to the authenticity of this amazing layout . My housband is so bowled over with your layout , he cant stop watching your videos . Graham - my heart really goes out to you. You have always said it's my railway and it's not prototypical. There are a lots of people out there that take great pride in critizing other folks efforts when they have never attempted to build a layout on the scale you have achieved. To argue about a manhole cover is absolutely rediculous - after all if it pleases you that's what matters and it is your layout and ideas after all. Maybe they are not to scale - who cares - you are providing inspiration to countless genuine modellors out there and giving them ideas for their their own layouts. The varied aspects of Lakeside I am sure are an inspiration to other modellors - it really is a pick and mix of ideas from the the canal scenes to the castle then to the village to the High Street with moving vehicles and onto the vintage yard and steamers. Take care of yourself and seek advice wherever appropriate and just remember that most of your subscribers love and value your contributions to the modelling world - my layout/my way. After alll - who paid for it - who built it - who enjoyed it - YOU - and that's what really matters. Eric from West Wales.

Your channel has always been an inspiration to me and has played a great part in getting me into the hobby and building my own model railroad. Hi Graham, I won’t name Names, a family member has/is going through exactly the symptoms you described. Only after months of professional medical intervention has the darkness slowly turning into the light. My simple opinion is we have to learn to control how we feel with coping mechanisms. I do believe everyone at some point feels as you do but if they are very very lucky the feelings last perhaps a day or even hours and they return to dare I say normal. Take all the help and advice you can. Hazel went through the darkness into the light and I feel so will you. Just takes time and understanding from all concerned. Steve

Graham I too suffer bouts of extreme anxiety and depression due to a lot of my ex Army comrades passing away suddenly this year and I too find myself wondering when is it my turn. I fully understand where you are coming from on that point. Minor life problems are exacerbated to stupid levels of intensity and hard to understand why. I think you are suffering from PTSD after your recent Family issues and I think you should consult your GP sooner than later Take it from a former combat veteran there is absolutely no shame in doing this, it will help. Take your time and hope you get well soon.

Graham, I too am 75 years old and recently lost my younger brother and two other family members. My wife too had a long heath problem (she is very much improved now). And yes, I too have had to think about my mortality, and how I look forward to seeing my grandkids grow up. So I've got an idea of where you are coming from. My best wishes to you and Hazel. I would think that as a 1st step would be a long chat with your GP to try to find a road to overcome this temporary issue. That said, Lakeside is truely a superb .layout and is an inspiration. Your Mastr Modeller award was not given for no reason. You do need to step back and look to your own well being. The layout videos can wait and your followers will understand and wait in support. Graham, I've been there. Not the same circumstances, granted, but your words are so true about depression. You are 100% correct about 1 negative comment in a thousand hurting so much. I was a pro drummer for a while and mostly people were brilliant with me, but there is always 1 comment that really hurts and that has the effect of 100 bad comments. It eats away. I ended up packing it all in and lost all confidence. No matter how many try and get me to start again, I wont. Anyway, best wishes mate. Take your time. Come back when you are ready. Sensible words as always, Graham, and well done for sharing them. I am currently helping my family to heal after three decades of my actions causing them untold pain. Being brought up to show no weakness and share nothing really didn't help. Without recently admitting my failure and my need for help I would not be here today, and neither would my amazing wife. Your railway, and the skilful work you put into it, can wait. For what it's worth, one thing I did learn is that 'all will be well and all will be well and all manner of things will be well' really is true. This does not mean that things will be easy, but the outcome of all things will be good and I wish it for yourself and your wife.

Hi Graham. I feel badly that you’re having difficulties. There is no way to explain to people who haven’t been where you are, just how you feel. I know all too well. As a registered nurse, I would get so depressed over the situations I’d be put into. Please do get some help. Generally, to address your concerns, the only way that you would be hospitalized is if you are a threat to yourself or others. You do seem like you were in a bit of an overwhelming situation, and recovering from that takes time. I sincerely hope that you find your way, either with another’s help or through your own means. Take good care. Brooklyn

Take it easy Graham. Always remember a huge number of your subscribers are so interested in what and how you model, and the overall impression. Wish I could model as well as you do.

I've been there, Graham. I've felt very much like life wasn't worth living. I hope that you're able to find peace and joy again, and I'm glad you're willing to be so open about this, because you may not realize it, but it can help others who are struggling with their mental health to feel like getting help isn't a bad thing, and that talking about your difficulties can be good for you. I think the most important thing is to take care of you. We're just a bunch of strangers on the internet, and most of us are thankful for your hard work on Lakeside, and on this channel, but at the end of the day, you work for you, not for us. We're just blessed when you do choose to share your love for your hobby with us. We'll all still be here when you're ready to come back to this. I don't know whether it helps, but you're not alone in struggling with this. Many a youtuber has had trouble with their mental health being affected by the comments on their videos. So many of the people I've followed for many years have had to take a break to work on their mental health, and I think it's good and healthy to set boundaries like that. Personally, I love your man hole cover, I think it's really clever, and really cool, and it's inspiring. I love that maintenance pit, it adds so much life to your layout, and is a wonderful little scene within the art that is Lakeside. With regards to getting help, what I can tell you is that the very last thing anyone wants to do is to take away your autonomy - there are massive legal hoops that have to be jumped through for someone to be admitted to a psychiatric ward, and the goal is always treatment in the community wherever possible. I don't know whether you have access to some of the resources I do in my area, but there's this wonderful service I've engaged with where, when I'm feeling at my worst, particularly at night, I can go talk, have tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and know that I have one on one attention for as long as it takes for me to start feeling safe to be alone again.

Please take care of yourself. You are a major inspiration for my getting into model railway. People just need to remember it’s your layout and as my mum always used to say if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.

You are very brave mate. I’ve had depression myself in the past and I was hyper sensitive. I found no interest in all the things I used to love. I was scared to go to the doctor and take tablets initially but I would recommend it to anyone. It’s the biggest cliche of all but time is a great healer- look after yourself and sod the haters. Don’t let other people ruin what you love. It’s a manhole cover for you- it was a teaspoon for me. Keep that manhole cover on and don’t compromise with idiots! Like you I was scared but even just talking to the doctor helped me very much- please get some help mate. 👍🏻

You have been an inspiration to many over the years, take inspiration from us and take a long ass break and focus on yourself. A wee holiday away somewhere is always a good start. Well done for having the strength to share ( and acknowledge )how you feel, I hope the local NHS can offer help, you have been through a lot but you aren’t alone, ( i hope the rivet counters are pleased with themselves!) Take very good care and keep going! (And i hope there is a flurry of apologies forthcoming.)

Hi Graham, I cannot believe that people would mock one of the best layouts on KZbin. I live in Australia but absolutely love your modelling ability and attention to detail. I hope to replicate some of your ideas once my own layout is up and running. Hope you are not away to long, but obviously mental health first. Hope to see you back soon. Take care.

You need to take yourself to a safe place and give yourself the space to get better. Death at our age (I am 76 on Wednesday) can be a real concern and sometimes it gets banished from our thinking but then it reappears. It's the way it is Graham. However you must take yourself out of the fray and simply be yourself and 'play with your trains' and not worry about those of us who love your videos and your layout and your skills because only by taking yourself away can you restore your mental health. If we care about you then we will understand and clearly many empathise closely with your feelings. Take care my friend.

Hi Graham. I know from personal experience that sometimes you have to ask for help. I lost my dad and sister during lockdown within 7 months of each other. This sent me into a spiral of depression and eventually led to me seeking professional help for depression. It takes a real man to admit he needs help. Depression cannot be dealt with alone. And yes, it is a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes it. I wish you all the best, sir.

Hi Graham,I am new to your channel but I can fully understand how you are feeling as I have many health issues including depression due to my issues ,I have watched your videos now for a couple of weeks looking at your process for n scale railway modelling, and looking at the comments people have put on I can feel that you are well appreciated by everyone on here so like I say to people regarding my issues is as long as you have good people around you I fully believe that this can get you through anything, I have had 2 major breakdowns which left me feeling that my life is over but I seemed help from total strangers and I found I could open up more without criticism,so stay strong both of you ❤️👍🏼

Graham, sorry to hear that, since lockdown there are so many angry and envious people out there.Your channel was the first I subscribed to ,Lakeside is superb, your skills are exceptional. The back story video was inspired.I had a minor stroke in 2022, no on going problems, however it makes you think, life is not a rehearsal ,and I take every day as a bonus. Best Wishes to you and Hazel , keep modelling

Graham these people are not worth the air they breath. I know what it’s like to be depressed, I personally went through three years of depression. I recently had two heart attacks in the space of 6 weeks and now I struggle to get to my layout . I don’t do videos because of the reasons you talk about . The people who are knocking your manhole cover have no imagination and are probably of the rivet counters in this hobby .I know it’s hard but try and let it not bother you , it is as you say futile . Take care and God bless you .

Hi Graham and Hazel, I know that you both have been through a lot over the past, though years with your personal life and family. Twelve years ago, I was in a similar position, nearly losing my wife and my youngest child due to complications at birth it a long road to travel to get my Mrs back on her feet and she did have a relapse 2 months ago for me I managed to stay strong mentally and physically. So my advice would be to take a break and get your self's better help is available, my friend. I don't want to see you disappear, Graham. I've enjoyed the time flowing you. Kind regards, Gary Leicestertmd

I completely understand I lost 2 very close family members within a year 1 was my father and its still an every day battle at times I feel like I've lost so much but I keep trying to live on (this to shall pass)but it is very hard... I know I will miss not only your model building skills but the stories to go with your layout... keep your head up and try to keep traveling down the higher paths in life though it is very hard at times ...I do believe some people are just jealous or can't help but hate others on social media

Hi Graham, I've been watching your videos for several years and after seeing this one felt I had to login and comment. I enjoy seeing your layout and your down-to-earth approach is refreshing (I don't get much time on my own layout, but I run whatever trains I like... hobbies are meant to be fun)! Speaking up on what you've been going through takes great courage - just a thought, but perhaps see if there's a "Men's shed" or something similar near you? Sending you very best wishes, Rob

Graham, so sorry to hear this. As somebody who is a suicide survivor and had depression after a very serious illness that hospitalised me for 6 months during covid with no visitors l would urge you to go and see your GP in the first instance. There are things that he can suggest, talking therapy, mindfulness or a short course of anti depressants (these really do work). It would be highly unlikely that a bed placement would be the way forward with your type of illness. Remember depression is a physical illness like any other caused by a chemical inbalance in the brain that can be rebalanced with medication. I truely hope that you have a very quick recovery, you've already done the most important thing by recognising it in yourself and talking about it. Take care mate. Andy.
