Mike...The Talking Heads 'Speaking in Tongues' you have is not a picture disc. It's pressed on clear vinyl. This was a limited edition (1983) with the cover designed by artist Robert Rauschenberg. Unsealed, it opens to reveal the art on acetate transparencies that rotate around the same centre spindle that holds the LP in place (sort of like the picture wheel contained in the Led Zeppelin III cover). The plastic covers on this edition tended to become yellow and brittle over time, especially if exposed to sunlight. It's not easy to find a great copy, but they're out there...

Great video Mike. Your content is very informative and super-interesting. The hard work, time and energy you put into seeking out these incredible records from private collectors is astonishing. I've certainly been guilty in the past of expecting nice records to be handed to me on a plate via auction sites and record shops, often without ever needing to leave my house, so it's fabulous to see someone like you prepared to put in some hard work to build a stellar collection. Of course, all of the records in your private collection (and mine for that matter!) will make their way back into circulation at some point in the future. In this regard, it's reassuring to know that they have been carefully looked after for future generations to enjoy. Keep up the good work and thanks for showing us your finds and sharing your knowledge!

Dang Mike, I wish I had known you were looking for a nice copy of Link Wray & the Wraymen. I had (May still have) a 1963 US Mono first pressing that was in high end VG+ condition. I myself am a big fan of 70s Elvis. I think his live performances in 71 are the pinnacle of the 70s stuff. Sadly nothing officially recorded but his January 71 Vegas shows are just knock out. I’m sure you are familiar with the official collectors label ; Follow that dream ? Some of those go for serious money and I never see them in used vinyl stores in the U.K. .

The Darrell Dragon story was fascinating. Who knew he had his own record. I just recently found a Swan Lake record that had Andy Warhol drawings (prints) from '55 in it that is pretty cool. Will you have the AP Billie Holiday "Lady In Satin" up for pre-order? Thanks for showing us your amazing finds.

I was happy for you, and downright excited about these incredible finds until you said you were hoarding the VU and nico. There's a few other people doing this, the worst being a guy named Mark Stalof. I get it, it's iconic, a worthy obsession, but hoarding copies, is just downright scummy. Cornering a market because you think it's undervalued, is just gross. In the 90s and early 2ks one could get a clean copy for around $100. It's not as rare as it's made out to be, but when clowns hoard 800 copies it becomes "rare". Spread the joy man wtf.
@bigsweetc6 Жыл бұрын
Doesn’t surprise me. Of course he has 50 copies collecting dust no one else can listen to. The guy is a cover collector! He also claims he “loves” Joy Division and happens upon a copy of one of their more desired records, sealed no less, and does he excitedly crack it and play it? Of course not! Far be it from me to tell someone else what to do but the reason why record collecting becomes more nauseating year after year is when it becomes less about music and more about some sort of stocks and bonds bullshit speculating.
@hurkamur1 Жыл бұрын
@@ronmadigan1911 "Original Warhols" are not rare, that was the entire point. I don't even think any of the sleeves or the bananas were printed at the factory. It's the same thing as hoarding OG copies of sticky fingers, except it's one of the top few albums of the 60s. Any serious record collector should have a chance to own an original. There are plenty to go around, unless the misers hoard them.
@hurkamur1 Жыл бұрын
@@bigsweetc6 The guy earned his success, and he's obviously a music lover. I get wanting to keep OG pressings sealed in certain instances, I also understand getting obsessive over pressing variations of your favorite records, but when it comes down to just hoarding them over speculation, it's just deplorable imo. Especially for a person who is fostering the hobby. Spread the love around, these things are meant to be played and cherished, not hoarded.

@londonrecordlover965 Жыл бұрын
I have to say I agree. It comes across as a bit arrogant to say that you know better than the market what something is worth and as a result you are going to hoard all the first pressings of VU & Nico. So many collectors would love to have the chance to buy a copy. Sad really.

Hearing the term " guilty pleasure" or hearing that someone might laugh at another's taste in music just makes me cringe. Everyone is different so should everyone's taste as well, or it should be. Too many apparently worry what others think. Life is too short for that.

The day people started hoarding music speculating that the price will rise one day to outrageous levels is the day the music DIED. This "hobby" has become nothing but a cash grab, it's not about the music anymore it's about how much money you can suck out of the vinyl bubble while it's still a fad. Just remember not that long ago record stores were on the brink of extinction, now I feel they're getting greedy, it will be their downfall mark my words
