Adriana, I really like your presentation style. You are interpersonally soothing. You speak clearly. You're humble, and don't make assumptions that we know everything. This was a particularly helpful topic because I'm trying to learn to set faceted gems. Prongs were easy, but this was a total mystery. Thanks for all the time you put into recording and editing on top of my thanks for the content.

We practice on brass because it's more or less the same hardness as gold. So, if you plan to work on gold It makes sense to practice on brass. If you only want to work with silver you can practice on copper, which is approximately the same hardness, or go directly to silver.
@hannahrebecca7152
@hannahrebecca7152 8 ай бұрын
gold is actually much softer than brass
@Enrithesetter
@Enrithesetter 8 ай бұрын
@@hannahrebecca7152 It really depends on the alloy. 18 karat gold, which is the most used in jewelry, could be harder or softer depending on the other metals is mixed with. Anyway, brass it's what comes closer to it in terms of hardness, although it's true that it tends to be a bit harder, but not much if it has been properly annealed.
@gundanium3126
@gundanium3126 7 ай бұрын
@@Enrithesetter What Alloy of Brass as there are at least 30 alloys of it? even properly annealed the stuff i bought at the hardware store work hardens in 2 hits of a hammer, well copper i can hit at least 10. and i have forged down copper into twezers and a band.
@Enrithesetter
@Enrithesetter 7 ай бұрын
@@gundanium3126 I don't know what's the alloy as I have used it only briefly in school, but I would avoid hardware store brass. Also, if you are going to hammer on it I don't think It would be a good gold simulant. It is used for practice in gem setting, and I can confirm it is fine for that purpose since I learned that way and I work on gold now.
@gundanium3126
@gundanium3126 7 ай бұрын
@@Enrithesetter@Enrithesetter I would think the Stone setting does cause at least a little bit of work to harden the material a bit as it is borderline engraving in this sense. I have read that some consider Bronze, Brass, and I just hammer-tested a bit of silicon bronze, and that moves beautifully under the hammer. I am a blacksmith, and some of those skills do translate into other metals.

Hi Adriana! I love the way your ring turned out! I like how the grain almost looks like tiny diamonds!! You did an excellent job!! I am new to making jewelry as well. I just started in 12/2023. I started with wire wrapping first and then got hooked on metalsmithing. I have only made one ring so far and that was out of copper tubing that I flattened and soldered together (sloppily). I hope that I can get as good as you one day!!🤞

Loved your video, like the technique, "push, wiggle wiggle and raise up" sounds like a dance move! I've done some engraving but used copper, as its nice and soft, but can be gritty. Liked your tips on sharpening. I find getting the right shape on the graver so difficult. You are ahead of yourself as I heard from other jewellers, that they practise on brass preparing for 9ct gold, (as it's hard).
@MiteraMade
@MiteraMade Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I can imagine what that dance move would look like! 😂🙈 I have never practiced one copper! Maybe that's the best option? lol and YES you are right about 9K gold, brass is more similar to that in hardness!

Someone may have already mentioned, but cup burrs are a tool that cut and are used in your flexshaft/dremel/pendant drill. The tools used here are beading tools :) A little tip- dont forget saftey glasses whenever you drill/burr/sand/polish, you want to always protect your eyes from flying debris. I thinn sometimes health and safety is overlooked in the self taught community. Stay safe friends!

unless you are casting it to stay away from the brass you can get it at the hardware store (in the US). It's basically a casting only and just work hardenes way to fast it work hardens in 1 hit with a hammer at 3/16th of an inch. copper should be fine to practice on. It's easy to get (but more expensive than brass), and you can buy it in pipe form. copper does work harden but you can aneal it pretty easy. I have actually forged out a pair of tweezers for my pickle pot (which I have yet to use as well. Pickle scares me a bit, and I keep forgetting to order a container for it.) bronze should be good too, but it's harder to get.

🤔Why would you need to pickle the material after polishing...i am still very new at working with anything but steel but its my understanding pickling is to remove excess flux after soldering...as i understand it you should not need to pickle something unless you have soldered it.

After polishing you put the jewelry in an ultrasonic bath (not the pickle) so it can be cleaned from the polishing compounds.
