Hello Dan, Would you mind telling me whether we can use UNLESS to replace IF in unreal present and unreal past conditional sentences (Types I and II)? Examples: 1. If he didn't have money, he couldn't buy this book. >> UNLESS he had money, he couldn't buy this book. 2. If it hadn't rained yesterday afternoon, I would have gone to the music club. >> UNLESS it had rained yesterday afternoon, I would have gone to the music club. Thank you very much in advance!

Yes, we can. However, in your second example, we would be more likely to say something like "I would have gone to the club unless it had been raining". While we can use 'unless' in the past tense, it is less common than using 'if' and can sometimes sound a little odd.
