Although we've made them available for free on KZbin, our video lessons are designed specifically for students enrolled in our prep programs. They're all very thorough, and, yes, some are *very* long! Either way, we're happy to hear you found the video useful. You should know that, since 2016, College Board hasn't tested a few of the items covered here (namely, the EENOBs and the "compound subjects joined by 'or'"), but most of the other stuff is still relevant. When SVA is tested on the current SAT, it'll very often be a "prepositional phrase separators" scenario.

Thank you so much! You are one of the only people I have found that throughly explains everything in detail. I have a question for one of them, for the compound subjects dealing with or/nor, is it the last subject or the second subject that must agree with the verb. Since there are cases that deal with more than two subjects.
@UniquePrep3 жыл бұрын
Glad you're enjoying the videos. The "technical" rule is that the subject CLOSEST to the verb determines the form of the verb. As an example: "The professors, the students, or the dean IS required to submit the paperwork." Another one with the subjects in a different order: "The dean, the professors, or the students ARE required to submit the paperwork." This is true even if the sentence is inverted (subject after verb). For example: "In the top drawer WAS the calculator, the pencils, or the erasers." Another one with the subjects in a different order: "In the top drawer WERE the pencils, the erasers, or the calculator." I don't discuss all that in the video because the pre-2016 SAT never tested such a situation. Not sure if you're prepping for the current SAT/ACT, but if you are, you should know that the "Compound Subjects Joined by Or" rule will almost certainly never be tested on either of those tests, even with only two subjects.

ETS stands for Educational Testing Service. ETS still plays a role in the administration of the test, though it’s unclear whether that’ll apply to the digital SAT. www.insidehighered.com/news/admissions/traditional-age/2023/09/29/significant-layoffs-educational-testing-service

Hey, When will the videos tailored for the new SAT be uploaded?
@UniquePrep2 жыл бұрын
Hi, friend. Although the videos in the Grammar Rules playlist aren't "tailored to" the current (post-2016) test, the vast majority of the material is still relevant on the current test. There are a some things that aren't tested as frequently and a few items that really haven't been tested at all (e.g., the EENOBs from rules 1 and 3; using the subject pronoun after "than," "like," or "as," which was discussed in rule 2; Double Negatives). Unfortunately, it’s unlikely we’ll be uploading any new videos for the current test since the SAT will be undergoing yet another MAJOR change in 2023/2024 (the switch to digital). As such, producing videos for the current test is far from the best use of our time & energy, the vast majority of which goes into working with the students enrolled in our test preparation programs. We realize our videos don't look “highly produced,” but it does take a while-sometimes several days-to create, edit and upload each of them, and it has taken about two decades of nearly daily effort to create & update our materials and manuals. Furthermore, we currently do not have enough information (namely, official practice tests/questions) from College Board to create lessons and videos that target the digital test, so for the time being, we’re in a bit of a holding pattern.

@UniquePrep2 жыл бұрын
@@bestselfimprovement3 Glad you got it figured out. Here's a bit more info. When it comes to relative pronouns (who/which/that) and determining whether verbs that appear after them-the verbs *_inside_* the relative clauses-need to be singular or plural, the key is to figure out which noun(s) the relative pronoun (who/which/that) refers to, and whether that noun is singular or plural. Usually it's pretty simple because, in most cases, the noun that the relative pronoun refers to is immediately before the relative pronoun. For example, in the sentence, "The boys _who_ are in the pool want to have a snack," the relative pronoun "who" refers to the noun right before it: "boys." Because "boys" is a plural noun, and "who" refers to it, "who" takes its plurality from "boys" and therefore we use "are" inside the relative clause. Now consider "The boy _who_ is in the pool wants to have a snack." In this case, "who" is referring to the singular "boy" and so the "who" itself is singular. Hence, we're using the singular verb "is."

@UniquePrep7 ай бұрын
Hi, friend. The Grammar/Writing rules tested on the DSAT include the following: 1. *_Subject-verb agreement_* 2. *_Pronoun agreement_* 3. Plurals and possessives (i.e., apostrophe usage) 4. Verb forms, including *_tense_* and finite/infinite forms 5. *_Misplaced modifiers;_* College Board calls this "subject-modifier placement" 6. Linking & addition of clauses/phrases; College Board calls this "Boundaries," and it revolves around the use of commas (and the *_comma splice_* error), semi-colons, dashes, colons, parentheses, *_fanboys/subordinating conjunctions,_* *_relative pronouns_* & their clauses, supplemental phrases, *_fragments,_* and essential/nonessential elements. You'll also be tested (rarely) on interrogative vs. indicative mood (aka, knowing whether a sentence needs to end with a question mark or a period or even an exclamation mark) 7. Transitions (aka, linking ideas with conjunctive adverbs like however, nevertheless, in fact, therefore, furthermore, accordingly, thus, then, ...) The topics/rules in *_bold italics_* are covered in our current Grammar Rules Playlist. As of now, you'll need to seek out alternative resources for the rest. However, if you have questions about particular topics or even particular questions you encounter (on practice tests), we're happy to try to help when we have the time!

@UniquePrep Жыл бұрын
As you probably know, College Board has released extensive documentation and several practice tests for the digital SAT; Khan has some practice materials, as well. Rules from our Grammar Rules (GR) Playlist that are almost certain to appear on the digital test include Subject-Verb Agreement (GR 1), Pronouns (GR 2), Tense (GR 3), Conjunctions (GR 8; see note below), Misplaced Modifiers (GR 9), and Run-ons & Comma Splices (GR 11). A couple rules that will show up that are NOT included in our GR Playlist are _plurals/possessives_ (including proper apostrophe usage) and proper _comma usage_ (especially with regard to restrictive/non-restrictive elements). Furthermore, transitions will be tested quite robustly on the digital SAT, and although our GR 8 video gives a decent overview of how to approach transitions questions, many students will want or need a more thorough lesson on this rule. We plan to add videos on these topics, but we have no time frame for when they'll be posted.

@@UniquePrep Please make more videos for the paper version of the SAT as you did for math. It'd be really helpful as there are still so many people taking that. The United States didn't shift to digital yet.
@UniquePrep Жыл бұрын
Hi, friend. Our business depends on knowing everything there is to know about these tests, so we're aware that the US does not fully shift to digital until March 2024. Like most other prep companies, though, we're currently developing materials for the Digital SAT so we're prepared long before that shift happens. But even more so, we're focused on preparing our currently enrolled students for their tests. As such, we likely won't be producing any more videos geared to the paper test. If there is a particular concept or question that is stumping you, let us know; we will certainly try to provide you with resources or even upload a short, informal walkthrough.
@UniquePrep Жыл бұрын
@CHILLAX Got it. We assumed you were asking your question because you're taking the Digital Test. Yes, absolutely these grammar rule videos are relevant to the current (paper) SAT. Not sure how much you've already watched, but our recommendation would be to go in this order: 11, 9, 12, 8, 13, 5, 3, 1, 2, 4, 7, 10. But you'll definitely need to supplement what you learn here with other material, as we don't offer videos on YT for certain concepts/question types (comma usage, keep/delete questions, logical placement questions, etc).
@namanjain9703 Жыл бұрын
Hi, I have a question: @UniquePrep The study of foreign languages requires considerable effort and time, as well as access to the right tools. What constitutes the "right" tools, however, changes based on previous language exposure and students' preferences. IN THIS question I'm not sure where the subject is. Is It after the underlined verb? Because, before we have a what clause and however which is a non-essential. CHANGES IS UNDERLINED!!!!
@UniquePrep Жыл бұрын
What _official_ test did this question appear on? Perhaps the easiest way to process the sentence is to treat everything from "constitutes" to "however" as a separator. I.e., _What [...]_ *changes* _based on previous language exposure?_ You wouldn't write _What_ *change* _based on previous exposure,_ would you? Ignoring that portion of the sentence should make it fairly clear that the _singular_ form of the verb is needed. "What" clauses as subjects are usually considered singular, but they can get a bit confusing/ambiguous. E.g., would you write _What confused me_ *was* _the errors in the first paragraph_ or _What confused me_ *were* _the errors in the first paragraph._ I think most people knowledgeable about grammar would agree that _either_ of those would be fine. However, neither College Board nor ACT would give you such a case and ask you to choose between "was" and "were." I haven't fully vetted these articles, but if you're curious to read more, here you go: www.thoughtco.com/what-clause-1692605 www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2018/03/what-2.html

In the second example (from the ceiling…) why isn’t ceiling the subject? Is it because from the_ needs to be finished before we find the subject or…? Thanks!
@UniquePrep3 жыл бұрын
There are a few ways to think about it, but I’ll start with perhaps the most basic. In most sentences, the subject of the verb must be the thing(s) DOING the action (in this case, the action is “hanging”). So ask yourself, what is hanging in this sentence? Is it the ceiling itself that is hanging? Or is it that the mobiles are hanging from the ceiling? Hopefully, it’s fairly clear to you that the latter is true: the MOBILES are hanging from the ceiling. So, mobiles is the subject and therefore determines what form of the verb is required. However, you should also recall what you learned earlier in the video about prepositional phrase “separators,” and the fact that the noun inside a prep phrase (the “object” of the preposition) can NEVER be the subject of a verb. Note that “from” is a preposition, and ceiling is the OBJECT of that preposition; therefore, ceiling can be ruled out as the subject.

@UniquePrep3 жыл бұрын
The manuals used in our videos are Unique Prep's proprietary materials, shared only with students enrolled in our test prep programs. If you're prepping for the SAT/ACT there's plenty of great additional material out there if you know where to look. If you're mainly interested in PRACTICE questions/sections, then of course College Board's or ACT's own OFFICIAL practice tests are your best bets. Some of these are available online for free; for instance, College Board (SAT) has 10 free official practice tests available for download on its website (the same tests are available on Khan Academy, also). And if you dig around a bit, you can find many more free SATs and ACTs online. ACT also sells what's commonly known as "The Red Book," which has 5 official practice tests in it. If you're interested in learning the underlying material by, for instance, working through the chapters of a prep book, then you'll want to poke around on the relevant reddit threads and/or amazon reviews to get a sense of which books/companies might work best for you. We are, for various reasons, hesitant to recommend materials other than our own, but again, there's definitely some solid stuff available. Hope that helps.

Hello, Pratik. We realize this reply is 2 years late, and that it's likely no longer relevant to you (at least we sure hope you've not been sitting around for 2 years waiting for our response!). But we just starting going through a backlog of comments of which KZbin never notified us. So here's the response: you're correct. "Region" is absolutely a noun, and at 20:50, you'll see we identify it as such (it's the subject of the sentence. "Experiences" is the verb. Sorry for not responding sooner, and we hope the last 2 years of your life have been healthy & happy ones.

If the Compound subject join by "AND" then the subject is plural right?

Correct. (Strange to get a reply after 2 years, huh? Sorry...we didn't realize we had such a huge backlog of comments awaiting approval. Hope you've had a pleasant couple of years.)

i wish that the sat questions were as easy as the examples in the vid 😭

SAT Subject-Verb Agreement questions should be some of the easiest questions on the test, assuming you know how to recognize them and you know the information in this section (especially the stuff about separators). These questions almost always follow the same pattern: "subject [separator] verb." (Of course, if you're a non-native English speaker, you may find them more challenging...that's true of all the grammar rules.) Are there specific SVA questions you've struggled with?

Glad you've found our videos useful. The manuals you see in our videos are Unique Prep's proprietary materials; they're shared only with students enrolled in our test prep programs. But there's plenty of great additional material out there if you know where to look. If you're mainly interested in PRACTICE, then of course, College Board's or ACT's own OFFICIAL practice tests are your best bets. Some of these are available online for free; for instance, College Board (the SAT) has 10 free official practice tests available for download on its website (the same tests are available on Khan Academy, also). And if you dig around a bit, you can find many more free SATs and ACTs online. ACT also sells what's commonly known as "The Red Book," which has 5 official practice tests in it. If you're interested in learning the underlying material by, for instance, working through the chapters of a prep book, then you'll want to poke around on the relevant reddit threads and/or amazon reviews to get a sense of which books/companies would work best for you. We are, for various reasons, hesitant to recommend materials other than our own, but again, there's definitely some solid stuff available. Hope that helps.

But,What will it be when they ask this, The teacher and the student...........arrived.(has/have)
@UniquePrep5 ай бұрын
Hi, friend. “Has” is used with _singular_ subjects. Example 1: Erica has a million followers. Example 2: The dog has eaten all of the food. “Have” is used for plural subjects (and “I”). Ex 3: The cars have much better batteries. Ex 4: The dogs have eaten all of their food. “The teacher and the student” is a _compound subject_ joined by “and”; compound subjects joined by “and” are always _plural._ (We cover compound subjects at 38:02.) Therefore, you would use “have.” Ex 5: The teacher and the student have a great relationship. Ex 6: The teacher and the student have discussed the essay.
