I have a few questions, if you don't mind: 1.I found the sentence: "Don't get him talking about illness'. Is it equal substitute for "Don"t get to talk about illness'? If in sentences with "get" like this instead of infinitive use past participle? For example: After you have got the children dressed, can you prepare the lunch?". Meaning is changed? 3. Is the following sentence right: "He is getting to be a skilled worker"?
@mapleleafesl61627 жыл бұрын
Hi Olegman, let me answer your questions: 1. "Don't get him talking about illnesses" means "Don't allow him to start talking about illnesses because he will never stop". You usually say something like this because if that person starts talking about a subject he feels strongly about, he'll never shut up. 2. Your sentence should read: "After you've GOTTEN the children dressed, can you prepare lunch?" 3. Yes, this sentence is correct. Here, 'getting to be' means 'becoming' so the sentence could look like this: "He is becoming a skilled worker". Hope this answers your questions. Thanks as always for watching and for your great questions!
@olegmanpo36297 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Andrew. Phrases with 'get' so complicated for me. They are everywhere in informal English.I understand first example with get+ing, but the other sentences I found - don't. Here it is: "Once we got the heater going the car started to warm up". Do 'got' mean 'make' or 'handle' there? How should this sentence translate?
@mapleleafesl61627 жыл бұрын
Your sentence here is an example of the grammar from this video on 'have' and 'get'. So 'get the heater going' here means caused to the heater to start working.

Differences between possessive have and causative have. How these two structures are different from each other.
@mapleleafesl61626 жыл бұрын
Are you asking that as a question?
@gagansharmaDevelopYourself6 жыл бұрын
Maple Leaf ESL ,, yes. This is a question.
@mapleleafesl61626 жыл бұрын
Basically, the causative 'have' more or less means 'request or 'ask' while the possessive 'have' means to 'own'. So, for instance, 'I had a doctor check my eyes' means 'I asked the doctor to check my eyes.' 'I have a bicycle' mean 'I own a bicycle'.

Please explain the meaning of the phrase " catch 22" ... Thanks Andrew!!!!
@mapleleafesl61625 жыл бұрын
A catch-22 is something in which neither result or outcome is achievable without first accomplishing the other. For instance, if I moved to another city I needed a job in order to get an apartment, but also needed an address in order to get a job, then both will be impossible to acquire as each requires securing the other one first. Hope this helps. Nice question, by the way.

Hi. Nice video. I have a question about this topic. When I say. I got Tim to go (virtually the same as I had Tim go). Does it mean that I persuaded him to go (to the party, for example), but the action (to go) can have a sense that is going to happen in the future? To clarify: It's 9:00 a.m.----------I bump into Tom, and I persuaded him to go. Then, at 10:00 a.m. I say to another friend" I got Tim to go to the party TONIGHT". Is that correct? So, I guess that it can be ambiguous and, in some cases, the causative carries some ambiguity about when the action is going to happen, right? I think that the same happens to have+somebody+ing------It can be like an experience or something that you cause but in a progressive sense.
@mapleleafesl61624 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. To clarify in that situation that they party hasn't happened yet, you might just say: I convinced Tim to go to the party tonight. But either way, your sentence is fine. Nice question.

mentor andrew, what is the difference between starting in asking questions started with "IF" and "WHEN" ? If "if" started in the sentence is the verb present tense? For example, If you eat the fruits you will be healthy. Is this correct? And if "when" is started in a sentence is the verb becomes past tense? for example, When we ate all the fruits we're stuffed. which is correct? im really confused please help me :-(
@mapleleafesl61625 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, KUYA SONGBIRD. Basically 'if' and 'when' can be followed by many different tenses. The difference between them is that 'when' is certain whereas 'if' is conditional. So, for instance, 'If you eat fruit, you will be healthy' is a grammatically correct sentence. But it comes with a condition: Only after you eat the fruit will you be healthy. Now take the sentence 'when you eat fruit, you will be healthy'. This sentence is saying that you will certainly be healthy when you eat fruit (at least in the mind of the speaker). Hope this helps at least partly clear things up!

@mapleleafesl61626 жыл бұрын
Hello there. In your first set of examples, you have used a causative verb in the active voice. Thus, the difference is that 'get' is generally used to show that you had to convince or persuade someone while 'have' is used to say that you just simply asked or requested something of someone. In your second set of examples, you used the causative verb in the passive voice. In this case, there is no difference between using 'get' and 'have'. They would be interchangeable. Please go watch my videos on 'Causative Verbs' for further examples and explanations.

Could you please tell me how I can report this to another person? "The person I have to choose has to be someone whose inventions or contributions are recent"

Hello. I do not understand , if using have , means that someone is doing anything for you( this is present tense) . Why do you write Had in past tense ???? Sorry explain that for me . Please. This is in the first sentence. Thanks.
@mapleleafesl61622 жыл бұрын
Take a look at the other examples. You can use 'have' in the past tense, future tense, progressive tense, etc with this structure.

@@mapleleafesl6162 I understood that you said : when somebody is doing something for you ( present tens) that was my confusion . I saw the video with Adam and clear. Thanks a lot.

When was the last time you had your car fixed? I wish I could get my kids to sleep earlier. This lady should have her house cleaned, she is very rich, however, her house is very dirty.

if the sentence in negative how can we change into causative ?? thank you
@mapleleafesl61627 жыл бұрын
Great question, soso momo. To make a sentence negative, we simply put the negative before the main verb. For instance: 'I didn't get the doctor to check my eyes' or 'I won't have Mrs. Smith contact you'. Similar to my example in the lesson: 'I can never get my roommate to help clean the apartment'.

Does it sound natural if I say "I am got to do everything"
@edmonteagudo34766 жыл бұрын
No. You can either say: 1) "I got to do everything." (meaning that finally, I was able to do everything because there was maybe little time to do it or had some inconvenience or problem); 2) "I had to do everything." (meaning that I was the only one that did everything at some moment in the past; this responds to the Modal Structure HAVE TO + VERB IN BASE FORM) or 3) "I did everything." (this is similar to example (2) but it is a simple statement saying you did all the things that had to be done by yourself; also in the past, but by not using the Modal Structure mentioned above you do not convey the idea of "obligation" or "being forced". I hope this helps. Any questions, just ask.
