Excellent production quality. Good focus with nice depth of field. Graphics are excellent and inserted perfectly. Background audio was not overpowering at all. My only comment is that it had an infomercial aspect to it. Some will like that a lot. If you are going for more sponsors, I think they will appreciate it also. But as a casual listener just wanting the review, I would prefer your natural voice. I kept waiting for, "but that's not all. Today only with this code you can get 2% off." "And, if you order in the next 10 minutes . . . . " You get the idea. Overall I would give it a solid A.

Am I right that Grammarly sometimes gives the British spelling of words? Could Grammarly put a small A for American spelling and B for British spelling? It might help.

I teach English as a foreign language and I have seen a lot of students misuse Grammarly through lack of knowledge. Grammarly should come with a big warning - "suitable only for those with at least near-native proficiency in English". To the extent to which Grammarly market their product to people with lower language levels, their marketing is unethical. The problem is that in amongst correct feedback, Grammarly misses glaring issues and gives incorrect feedback. Students cannot reliably distinguish good feedback from bad and can end up with a worse version of their document, not a better one.

You said it much better than I did but I totally agree. People who say otherwise, either don't know any better or are so proficient that they don't need it. I don't trust it unconditionally because I have to correct it often. That said, it does help with my terrible spelling.

@angelinadash2396
@angelinadash2396 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, LMAO. You can't just use LITERALLY ANY WORD that grammarly auto-suggests for you. For example. if you wanna say "I caught a big figh", but don't want to use something better than BIG and not sound like a kindergartner talking, you could use SIZEABLE, or MASSIVE. You should NOT, HOWEVER, use words like CONSEQUENTIAL, or SIGNIFICANT, or HEAVY-BUILT, as these make no sense in the context of physical size x'D Also, you should use synonyms sparingly. Not all situations call for convoluted over-complicated synonyms. YOu also run the risk of your reader not understanding what you said because they do not recognize the advanced words you used.

Hi Dave, Great video. As usual, you pack a lot of info in a very short space. I like the little touches like the boos and the swoop sounds. The music didn’t do a lot to enhance the video IMHO, but neither did it distract. I can see how it would be good to have music to cover up any of the background sounds that inevitably make it necessary to do multiple takes of a video. Until I watched this video, I hadn’t even thought about using Grammarly, but your last comment about Grammarly’s ability to detect copyright infringement made me think twice.

Great video, as always, Dave! As a fiction author, something like Grammarly is extremely important to me. Not to replace a professional editor, but to make sure whatever I submit to one is as error free as possible. I have experimented with Grammarly (the free version) with mixed results. I am presently using ProWritingAid and am extremely happy with the results provided. However, with that being said, I'd love to see a comparison between Grammarly and ProWritingAid from a fiction author's perspective. Any insight on this? And, by the way, love the reference to your daughter's foray into higher education. Although I live in Florida, I grew up in eastern Pennsylvania, not far from Lehigh University :-)

As a writer, I actually thought at first grammerly was doing a great job...And it did correct a huge portion of errors I had. However, when it comes to having another human proofread what I found grammerly couldn't do accurately, I still had to wind up paying a lot of money (could had possibly been more) to get adequete services. Now remember worddoc fixes virtually all 'spelling errors' and stuff like that. Also know that the Grammerly youtube channel 'disables comments' which is always suspicious. It means they know its not perfect, and don't want others discouraging others in the comment section with their experiences with their app.

It's indispensable. I just upgraded to the premium version. Is it better than an editor? Hell, no. And about eighty percent of its recommendations are either unnecessary or wrong. But it's the best program out there at catching real mistakes, typos, and other issues. If you know what you're doing as a writer, this tool gives you the edge you need. In a rush you can also run a doc through this baby and it'll catch all obvious errors. Cuts down your labor drastically, and for the price, it can't be beat. I wish I'd known about this years ago.

You're lying and probably work for Grammarly. My spell check that's built into my own browser works just fine and it always has; the spell check in Word works just fine and it always has. Grammarly is not something new, it was backed by In-Q-Tel and In-Q-Tel is owned by the CIA. "If you write anything on your computer, we want to read it" - Grammarly, aka the CIA. NOTHING IS FREE!!!

Hey Dave, just checked out the video as requested. First off, your daughter's editing of the video is very good. The pacing, transitions and clarity are all top notch. I've edited a few videos myself (most recently my book trailer) so I know how time consuming it can be. Great work. I thought the video overall had a more professional flair than the previous ones. It felt less gimmicky and got straight to the point. Your delivery was also slicker, clearer and more authoritarian. Keep it up. The music is a bit nondescript but I didn't really notice it that much. Maybe it could be turned down a touch. No complaints with the format. In regards to the content I would've liked the hear more about the Fiction-side of the premium service Grammarly offers. I use it myself when editing final drafts of my fiction. What I was intrigued by was the style of writing feature. Could you possibly elaborate on that in a future video or here on this thread? One thing I think Grammarly could benefit from and make its purchased service better would be to implement a Text to Speech system. When proofreading my latest release I used the feature in Word and was amazed with how many typos it picked up, and that was after I'd proofed it myself. Twice. They say you should read out loud when proofing, which is something I do already, but the problem with that is once you become too familiar with the text our brains automatically fill in the gaps of what we think should be there, without actually seeing where we might have missed out a word. I found that to be one of the flaws of Grammarly. It does miss little connector words from time to time. Other than that it is a very useful tool though, especially with it being free. PS. I didn't notice any over-elaborate blinking of any kind. Cheers for the great work you're creating. Being entertained as well as feeling educated is no easy feat in the modern world. You're doing a wicked job of making it look easy. If you're considering doing more of these types of videos, one on Pro Writing Aid would be awesome. Thanks again. Gareth
@Kindlepreneur
@Kindlepreneur 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Gareth - thanks! I was worried about the pacing. I felt a little ho-hum - perhaps I need my coffee right before shooting...haha. As for the fiction-side, perhaps a more in-depth video on the use of Grammarly would help. I wanted the review to be short but to the point - where as a "how to," I can probably get away with 10-20 minutes. However, when it comes to Fiction writing, I think Pro Writing Aid is the better of the two. I'm currently working on a side-by-side video showing the difference between the two when it comes to writing/editing a book (a great suggestion btw). As for the blinking, my daughter gets after me for NOT blinking...ever. Sometimes, we'll have to reshoot just because i went an entire minute without blinking (weird fact, but I sometimes sleep with my eyes partially open - drives my wife nuts too).

Cool Dave, I'll definitely check it out myself and watch that video too. Look forward to it, in fact. Weirdly enough, I was watching some talk show the other evening (I live in Spain) and the guests on it were the actors from the latest Jurassic Park flick, plugging the movie. Anyway the show can be a little goofy and tongue-in-cheek. During it they started playing a contest they make all the celebrities do, which was how long they could keep their eyes open. Chris Pratt broke the record, keeping his eyes open for over 5 minutes. It was freaky but pretty impressive. Not sure that skill can be learned. Your reply reminded me of it, so I thought I'd mention it. Maybe it's an untapped, badass skill?

You asked for feedback in your email and all I can say this is an ace video in all respects, Dave. I noticed you talk more slowly than normal, which suits this foreign English speaker just fine :P I love the background blue-light-pulsating effect which make the video more interesting visually but without distracting me. The music is perfect and goes well with the theme, not too loud, just fine. Really, I couldn't fault this video if I wanted to!

Hi dave, awesome video, , a question about kdp rocket please , some keywords have google search volume but dash in front amazon search volume, does this mean that the amazon search volume is negligible, or only means that no data kdp rocket can extract about these keywords from amazon ? Thanks
@Kindlepreneur
@Kindlepreneur 6 жыл бұрын
No problem. The dash means its very negligible. Rocket pulls from Amazon suggestions and Google suggestion. Sometimes there will be Google suggested keywords, but since there were 0 searches for that, our Amazon API doesn't recognize that term at all. The reverse can happen too where Amazon suggested keywords have 0 searches on Google.

I could see Grammarly being useful for foreigners learning English, but for us native-speakers, I think a better route would be to read and study Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style". That being said, it is pretty neat that Grammarly can detect if your work is being plagiarized online.

It said it was declined for all plans on the site. Idk if it's the card or the site at fault.

Unfortunately, in my experience, using grammarly at undergrad level...it is not great. It's okay, but not great and can really mess your writing up, remember this thing works based on algorithms, maybe after a couple more years it'll be alright, but for now at uni level I don't reccommend it. (My grammar and spelling are horrible I know that already.)

Grammarly is great. One BIG issue, however, is the disabling of MS Word's Ctrl Z recovery option. I have had instances of losing big chunks of data. I know they warn about this, but that is not good enough. Unless I am missing something, they must fix this. Otherwise, the money I have spent on Grammarly is worth every dollar. For academic writting, you cannot go without.

Hey Dave, I've been experimenting with Grammarly a bit more (the free version) and can't seem to find the answer concerning a feature I really appreciate in ProWritingAid. It checks for what they call "echoes". If I use the same word inside of a specified word span, it flags it as something to investigate. For example, in the sentence "I stand far enough away to distance my myself but close enough to hear.", ProWritingAid would flag the word "enough". Do you know if this is something that Grammarly supports in the premium edition?
@Kindlepreneur

Hi Dave (great name btw). Sadly, no. Grammarly doesn't do that. However, in one week, I'll be publishing another video that will be a direct side by side comparison of the two: ProWritingAid vs Grammarly .

Read and use the language as often as you can. Language is a skill. The more you experience it the better you will get at it. More often than not software like Grammarly will not teach you to be more proficient at English, because yes, while it corrects grammar, it may not have the right words or phrases for your idea. And you may just end up as a joke. It would be better if you actually know what and how you would like to express yourself in English, and you can only get that through reading and experiencing the language, than a software telling you're spelling or grammar is incorrect.

I have since altered my position on Grammarly. Unfortunately, my editor passed away. I have since purchased the professional version of Grammarly and found it even more useful. There are elements of the professional version that I have found extremely helpful. I have a few bad habits that my editor used to beat me up with. Grammarly does the same. I even ran books I have published with my editor and Grammarly helped improve my writing. It was a good move.
