If I thought I was good enough I would've never tried to improve. There is plenty of room to improve. It gives you a reason to exist.

I'm wondering how you feel about the lyrics of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (Steely Dan for those who don't know). Some of their songs do seem to be reflections of their own lives and beliefs, but lots of them are about people who are obviously not them, and obviously not real. Kind of noir-fiction, or even science fiction. How would someone approach trying to write lyrics like that, that are more stories, rather than based on personal truth?

Bro, you need to work on your film setup. I can't trust you as a creative coach when you're not showing a baseline of quality control on your own work. Lighting and backdrop could use some serious work

What would you suggest?

Video is about songwriting; not filming.

@@SongWritersChopShop That being said… just grab up a soft box, a stand with a light socket, then grab a $20 As seen on TV LED light with 3 flaps from Dollar General…. MEGA power and lumens for CHEAP. My personal secret for my photography… and now I’m giving it to you. Don’t tell everyone. It’ll kill the lighting business. Lol. Then just stand it up about 7 ft in the air at a 45 degree angle from yourself. Then line any shelving behind you with LED strips from Walmart…. Or stage a Tungsten lamp behind you to the stage left of you near your wall. Stuff like that Oh goodness, you do have LED strips. They aren’t popping because your back wall is so close to you… and your main main can’t go back far enough because the wall where your camera is is also close…. So… Hmmm… Maybe, actually, replace your powerful light with a small ring light with different temperature settings, and pick a 5600 (very mildly tan) setting… then set another cheap ring light to your stage right, behind you slightly, like a key light… with a, um… hmm… a lavender color. Something royal. Lol. Mainly, producing separation. And you might have your um, aperture set to too low of a setting? Whatever camera you have, I don’t know. But if you can change aperture, open it up, then create that separation… sharpness comes from GOOD LIGHT SEPARATION more than perfect sharpness through the “lens”… or, the perception of sharpness, anyway. And it’s video.. so video gives the illusion of focus through motion, as well. Well… our brains do that for us, through those means.

@@SongWritersChopShop Thank you so much for helping songwriters. That’s a wildly more difficult skill that is… um… lacking in the general sense. There are plenty of channels with good lightning, but garbage information. Thank you so much for focusing on what matters! 🤜

Basically, what I'm looking for is permission to re-draft the song I was writing, which I now hate because I was trying to be clever and funny. Not only have I just got that, I also have some practical steps to take towards that end. So thank you! Also, I recommend youtube.com/@htws - students of Pat Pattisson. Brilliant channels. You're doing God's work.
