Mitch Gallagher sits down with Grammy Award-winning producer and engineer Joe Chiccarelli. The topic of the day is the Tonelux JC37 tube condenser mic, developed in collaboration between Tonelux and Joe Chiccarelli. A meticulous re-creation of the fabled Sony C37a tube condenser, the JC37 is smooth (almost ribbon-ish) yet exhibits a fast transient response and plenty of presence, while delivering honest, natural audio reproduction. It sounds incredible on vocals, drum overheads, strings, acoustic guitar, piano - basically everything.

In the dim past I did live sound at Stony Brook. For what I determined would be the "classy" shows I would go to the administration and borrow "their microphone." Why they had a C-37 I never asked. I specifically remember using it for a Judy Collins concert into an Altec 1567A, 2 Altec A7's and our prized original Crown DC 300.

Great interview, but your C37 history is a bit off. Sony designed the C37 in the 1950s as a cheaper, more compact alternative to the expensive Neumann U47. How could Sony copy the U67 when that mic wasn't introduced until 1960? In fact, Neumann released the U67 in an attempt to compete with the C37! Later in the sixties when Sony released the first ever FET condenser mic, Neumann came out with the U87 in another attempt to compete with Sony. They've made some incredible microphones, but Neumann weren't always the innovators...

The U67 was Neumann's response to the Sony mic hurting their mic sales. Joe should know that Sony wasn't copying the U67. He might have meant the U47 but those two really aren't that similar sounding. Kind of strange detail to get wrong when hyping this clone. I'm guessing it's going to be a great mic.
