Thanks for watching! I'm glad that there's still plenty of interest in GT2 content like this. I've made a text document that covers all of the tuning tricks shown in this video, and more. Check it out here: docs.google.com/document/d/1kt8BvShge9ZTH7hnUTsI46WRcf7XPfvEsMPjc4twAm4/edit?usp=sharing Some extra notes and tips that didn't make it into the video: - On original hardware, PAL has some bugs that causes some cars to stutter while accelerating. This is most noticeable during a Test Run before a race. It also makes some cars, like the Ford GT90, much more likely to spin out. As such, I always recommend using DuckStation and Silent's 50 FPS code if you plan on playing on PAL. - pez2k's GT2+ mod fixes the Acura racing mod issue on NTSC-U, along with various other bugs. The complete version also adds new content like prize cars in manufacturer, rally and national league races. If you're going to play on emulator, NTSC 1.2 with GT2+ is the way to go. Link in the description. - If you're using a controller with an emulator, I suggest using the analog sticks and making sure that analog mode is enabled. The controls are much less twitchy this way. If you're forced to use digital controls, prioritize suspension upgrades to reduce weight transfer by lowering the ride height, stiffening the stabilisers or raising the front camber. (see KingLich's reply below for analog acceleration/brake controls in DuckStation) - DuckStation's analog sensitivity settings are very high by default. I suggest lowering it to 120% if you want finer control of your car's turning. - Another way to get analog acceleration / brake trigger controls in DuckStation is to use an input profile. In-game, map acceleration and brake to right analog up / right analog down. Then, in DuckStation, make a new input profile, unmap L2 and R2, then map your controller's left trigger to right analog down and the right trigger to right analog up. Right-click on GT2 in the games list and set the input profile to the new one you made. - To clarify, the licence test times are different between regions. While a few PAL tests were made easier, many, especially in IB, are more difficult. The rally tests are also more difficult than NTSC's. NTSC's IA-3 with the NSX on Apricot Hill is particularly challenging from my experience, but PAL is more forgiving and gives an extra 200 milliseconds for gold. Hard to say whether one region has an advantage over the other. - Licence test results don't count towards 100% completion, so you don't actually need golds in every test unless you want the prize cars. The Event Synthesizer does count towards completion, however, so you'll need to obtain the Super licence. - Soft springs will allow the car to go over bumps and curbs much more smoothly. Combined with high downforce, it can create 'ground effects' where the car stays glued to the road after a sudden elevation change. A lot of cars benefit from softer springs, especially lightweight MR's like the Elise and Stratos. I have another shorter video on my channel demonstrating ground effects. - To go more into detail on dampers: the bound and rebound only matter for changing how the car reacts to bumps. Stiffening the rebounds won't make the car easier to turn, unlike later games. It's best to ignore them and tune the bound and rebound together like I did in this video. Stiff rear dampers can improve mid-corner grip and turning in many cars, while if the front dampers are too stiff, the car will lose grip more easily. Set the front dampers to 1 on Red Rock and Test Course to prevent loss of grip. - Front camber is extremely useful for 'glueing' the car to the road and increasing grip. Many MR's benefit from 3.6 or more front camber. Try using up to 6.0 if the car feels too twitchy and loses grip easily. Be aware, however, that it can slightly reduce braking distances if set too high. - Setting the rear toe to 0.20 improves mid-corner grip at no real downside (straight line traction isn't impacted like later games), while -0.20 front toe gives the car a sharper turn radius. Minus is toe-out, positive is toe-in. Rear toe-out (-0.20) can also help the car turn, but it'll likely just cause the car to skid instead. - The only special event races that require specific types of cars are the drivetrain races (FF, FR, MR, 4WD), manufacturer events, and the turbo and NA races. Everything else can be completed with any car as long as it's under the hp limit. It's hard to say whether this was a developer oversight or not, but it's up to you if you want to obey the event 'rules' or just bring whatever car you want into each race. - Turns out the Impreza Type-RA Ver. VI sedan is faster than the coupé when tuned to 295hp. The coupé Ver. VI has a higher max hp when fully tuned though. - I really underrated the Supra SZ-R. The problem with the NA Supra's in this game is, they have really narrow power bands and they feel underpowered when driving in automatic. With engine balancing, the gear trick and gearing up past redline, however, you can squeeze a lot of power out of the SZ-R. - A fully tuned ZZ-S Coupe gets 279hp, and when the gear trick and ride height trick are applied, it's easily one of the best 295hp cars in the game. Thanks to its light weight and MR drivetrain, its turning ability is still fantastic after applying the ride height trick. - If you want the Stratos without having to play prize car roulette, you have two options: you can trade the car from my 'TuningNightmare' save in my starting saves folder or, if you're on emulator, you can complete the Apricot Hill endurance, make a save state on the screen before the prize money screen (the one that shows the lap times with your car in the background), check your garage to see which car you won, and load the save state if you didn't get the Stratos. - If you don't want to wait for the Cappuccino to appear in the Suzuki used dealership, the Lancia Y is a very good choice for the Lightweight K cup. You can also win the Yaris/Vitz from the Compact Car cup and use that, it's a decently strong choice. - The R30 Silhouette is already one of the best 591hp cars, but if you want something stronger, the Esprit GT1 is fantastic. It's MR though so you'll need to crank up the front camber and LSD Decel. to keep it stable. The Altezza LM has a 50% chance of being a prize car in the Rome 2 hour endurance and it's probably the best 591hp car in the game. The TT LM has ridiculous acceleration and is a reliable choice, while the RX-7's from the Mazda dealership special section and the International Championships are as good as you'd expect. - There's an old website that can convert GT2 codes from one region to another, it's available on the Wayback Machine. I've put the link in the description. You can use it for the codes I show in the video to make them compatible with your game's region. - To explain the ride height trick in more detail: two things are happening at once. First, the car's center of gravity is being moved forward, causing the understeer and shorter braking distances you see in the clip I used. Second, because the car is pointing downwards, the game thinks the car is going downhill and boosts its speed accordingly. The opposite will happen if you set the front high and the rear low, as the car will be pointing upwards and will lose acceleration as if it were going uphill. - When doing the gear trick on very powerful cars with heavy wheelspin, you can instead push both 1st and 2nd all the way to the left, then always launch in 2nd. It can be very useful, but the main drawback is that you can't really use 1st gear for slow corners since it'll be too fast to give 2nd gear enough power. Try it on the R30 Silhouette. - To really make use of the gear trick on cars with narrow power bands, you can make 1st and the third-last gear the closest. This is very specialized though and powerful cars will suffer on high-speed tracks. 6-speed cars like the Corvette can make good use of it though. - If you set Auto Setup to higher than 1 when doing the trick, you'll get longer gears, but they won't be as close. This can be useful on 4WD's to give them more top speed using the regular close gear pattern. For the closest gears, you're better off sticking with Auto Setup 1, as it causes a noticeable hit in acceleration with higher settings. - The method of applying the gear trick shown in the CR-X example (setting the external final to 2.500) is the "optimal" method for best acceleration. For most cars though, you don't need to over-complicate it. Setting final all the way to the right, then setting Auto Setup to 1, then moving final back to the left until has top speed and arranging the individual gears, is much less time-consuming and will will almost always result in faster acceleration than the stock gears. I'll add more here as it comes to mind. Thanks for watching and reading!

Users of DuckStation If you want to be able to use the trigger pedals on your controllers, choose NeGcon as your controller on emulator's settings. You will be able to both have analog steering AND gas/break. VERY helpful on licenses. Buttons will change however, you might get confused on menus. But once you get past the game will be so much more enjoyable.

It's really reassuring to hear this, thank you. That Reddit comment was the first piece of feedback I got for any of my GT content, and while I knew I made something that needed to be made, it did make me feel uncertain about whether I invested myself into something that nobody else cared about. I was fully expecting for it to get a couple thousand views at most, and that would be that, I'd move onto something else. Thankfully I did eventually realize that there was an audience for this, they just weren't being catered for until now. Have fun with your playthrough!

Don't often leave comments on KZbin videos but boy this video was fantastic. As a big fan of GT and GT2 being a favorite of mine, this was so enlightening to see so many little things I didn't know about the game in general. And I particularly love that you left so many different cars for people to try out as well as comments on how there's different ways to enjoy the game. This was great work, and thank you for putting it together.

Ah, thank you! Glad you appreciated it. Yeah, I think that's one of the nice things about the game, the amount of freedom it gives to the player. A side effect of the game's rushed development, but it makes the game feel very relaxing to play. Nothing's stopping you from bringing a Lancer Evo into the wagon cup, but you can always just bring your own wagon if you want more of a challenge.
@arcanel31662 жыл бұрын
@@TeaKanji For a long time I didn't know that you shouldn't have been allowed to bring just whatever car into whichever tournament more or less, but it's been fun learning more about how much of a beautiful mess this game is lol On a personal level, my last run or so have always involved bringing a car that was always the correct type that the racing tells you to do. And I've noticed that, without a lot of extra modifications to the car, being about 100 or so HP under the limit always made the race at least more challenging, and I'd definitely be up for making it more challenging next time I hit up the game again.
@TeaKanji2 жыл бұрын
@@arcanel3166 Yeah, I feel you. While making the video I did a few test runs using the starter saves and cheat codes, it made the races a lot more intense. With the AI codes, you need to be right on the HP limit and/or have super soft tyres to keep up since the AI will blast through corners. Had to be a lot more selective with the races I entered since there was an actual risk of losing and having to try again. If you want a proper challenge, in my saves folder there's one called "SizeMatters" where you start with a Cappuccino and a Stagea wagon. See how far you can make it with just those two. The Stagea actually corners surprisingly well but you can defintiely feel its weight on the straights.
@arcanel31662 жыл бұрын
@@TeaKanji Ohhh, a Cap and a Stagea. That sounds like a fun challenge. Might have to give that a go some time. I feel like almost every race feels possible minus the All-Star championships and that kind of race, but definitely something worth going for! I like the concept haha. It'd be my first time playing on an emulator proper, whenever I get to do something like that, and I've been dying to play some of the older GT's again since it's been a long while. Gonna be even more fun trying to do this with digital controls as I've never ever played a racing game without them.

Just recently found this, geez. Amazing job on this guide. Nice to see there's still content made for GT2. As for the dampers ... they are ... weird. I've tested them quite a bit, and from what I can tell, higher settings allow the wheels to move a lot more quicker. You can check this out by grabbing any car with adjustable suspension, taking it to Red Rock Valley or Test Track, setting the dampers to 10 and going around the banking. On the replay, the wheels will be bouncing up and down quite quickly, and so will the chassis/car itself. If you set the dampers to 1 and do the exact same, the wheels will still bounce, but won't move as fast, same with the chassis, it won't bounce as aggressively. It will be considerably more controlled. This is considerably more noticeable on PAL's 25 FPS (Since the physics engine is tied to the frame rate which ... isn't ideal. Another reason to use the High FPS code). This leads me to believe that higher settings = higher damper speeds = lower damping rates, which means the damper settings are indeed reversed. Personally, I usually roll with a setting of 2 on both Bound and Rebound. That seems to let the dampers do enough work to keep the car stable. On the cases where the car bounces too much (Stiff springs, Test Track/Red Rock Valley/Midfield), a setting of 1 helps ... or just softening the springs, that works too. For Rallying, a slightly higher setting can help, 4 or so.
@TeaKanji Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Wow, that answers a lot of questions, thanks for the info on dampers. When I was making this guide, I think I focused a bit too much on how dampers affect understeer/oversteer than their effectiveness over bumps. I'll need to try this again when I'm back home next week and see what's going on. 2 / 2 sounds about right; that's what I went for when I was testing different settings for the Lancer Evo V RS trying to see what worked best. I'll update that section in the pinned comment in any case. Thanks again!

One thing I love about GT2 is that the game encourage you to skid! You may be slowed a bit but it's really fun to drive that way and learn how to control the car, also didnt punish you for doing it unlike GT1. Always spins! Playing GT2 after finished GT1, I slowly learn not to fear when I hear the tyre scream.
@TeaKanji2 жыл бұрын
Hehe, yeah indeed. GT1 desperately needed LSD adjustment to reduce turn-in oversteer but it was nowhere to be found. Turning while braking was simply not an option. I considered doing a GT1 guide, but I find the tuning severely limited in that game. GT2 is a lot more forgiving, especially with softer racing tyres and downforce. Tuning a RWD around sports tyres is a lot of fun too though. The Supra RZ with sports tyres and 500hp drifts like crazy with the right setup, but it still stays on the road quite well. Edit: revisiting this comment because I had no idea how useful front camber was back then. It's the exact solution for reducing turn-in oversteer in GT1, and is also extremely useful in GT2.

It's so cool that the classic Gran Turismo games are getting lots of extra content through mods and challenge runs. The second game was my favourite, as the car list greatly expanded on the original game, but most events didn't feature the entry restrictions that would come about in GT3 and GT4. I bought the Escudo, but ... as a veteran of GT 1, I still love the FTO LM and use that instead. I even compete in a local event with it and lost spectacularly against ... the elephant in the room. Most of the contenders are using that since there's no limit for the 4wd class. As for the FR class ... I pick the blue FD RX7 GT-C. I just love that car's handling and looks. With it I got up to the semifinals. Got eliminated by a Viper though. I have a very basic knowledge to tune the cars at that time. Mostly just adjusting the auto gear and lower the ride height. I did use the manual for the FR due to the obvious reason. I just glad that this game still gave us the FTO LM. My good times in the series continue with that car.

That's really cool that there's local GT2 events, though it's a shame there aren't house rules banning the Escudo. It creates a scenario of, why use anything else? The final is kinda cool though, since it was between a father and his son. In the end, I believe the father let his son won since he is kinda leading the whole race but suddenly miss the apex and the son's car passed him at second to last corner. Yep ... the way to get the sweet FTO LM is very hard. I forget which one but I keep on failing in one of the course. I had one of my friend do that one test for me. Glad to help! For the Supra, I recommend keeping it around 493hp or below, and using the Castrol Tom's or Cdma One Supra for high powered events. I remember I used to buy the Honda CRX and get stuck on Sunday Cup. The gear trick works in GT3 as well yeah. When doing it, you need to slide the Auto Setup all the way to the right before going to the left, or else it won't give long gears. The layout is a bit confusing at first, but the idea is the same: 1st all the way to the left, 5th all the way to the right, 6th a little slower, and space out the gears in between. Just need to set TCS to 0 or 1 so it doesn't slow down your launch. I'm working on a GT3 guide right now because I think its early game is even more brutal than GT2's, I'll show how to do the gear trick there along with a bunch of other stuff.

Thank you! Glad you're enjoying them. This GT2 guide was my first time making a video of this sort, so it's very rough around the edges compared to the GT1 guide, but hopefully it's still a decent viewing experience. By the way, I checked out your channel, and I love how the first thing I'm greeted with is my favourite Loathe song. Nice covers, keep it up.

@TeaKanji I watched it in full and its very informative and I have no criticisms for you, it's an amazing guide and it'll help new and experienced players for sure! Looking forward to more videos like this! (And more like the Miata beating 1100hp drag cars) Ahh thank you so much!!! They're from my hometown, one of my favourite bands! 😁

Ah, that's good to hear, thank you. Yep, there'll be more GT2 content for sure, I have some more challenge races planned before I'll go and do another tuning tutorial, because there's a lot of things I missed out on or overlooked in this guide. Want to make sure I've practiced tuning a bunch of different types of cars before I go out giving advice. That's cool about Loathe by the way, guess I should re-listen to I Let It In and It Took Everything, it's been a while.

There's a GT2plus mod that re-adds cut content and fixes bugs in the game. It's available from GTPlanet and comes as 'complete' (both content and fixes) and 'lite' (fixes only). I'd personally want the GT engine reverse-engineered so it can be played on PC without emulation, but that requires skill and dedication.

Don't forget Mugen Integra Type-R on FF cars! Although it cannot be race modified, it can reach 358hp with ~992 kg! Properly tuned she can reach 200 mph!
@TeaKanji Жыл бұрын
Yeah, if I had opened the list up to non-racing modified cars, I for sure would have mentioned the Mugen's, Spoon's and Mazdaspeed's. The Spoon Civic Type R in particular punches way above its weight despite the lack of downforce; it can beat out a lot of RM'd cars on high-speed tracks. The Mercury Cougar can't be RM'd, but it can get around 450hp, I think it's one of the most powerful FF's in all of GT. In general though, downforce makes a huge difference when it comes to handling, so I restricted the list to RM'd cars for the sake of brevity.

Hey again, i just came with buying an Audi S3 and tuned it to max, it's about around 330 hp, better time in 400m and 1000m than a 700 hp Supra. I came with the idea about the S3 being ONE OF THE BEST CARS in the entire game due to.. tuning it is easy and it can drive so smoothly. 11:300.00 400m gear trick, 21.027.00 1000m
@TeaKanji Жыл бұрын
Interesting; I tried out the S3 tuned to under 295hp with the stage 2 turbo just now and yeah, it's a decent little road car. A shame it doesn't have racing modifications though, I find the lack of downforce hurts it around the track. I can only set 1 : 14's around Midfield with it, while the RX-7's and other top 295hp cars are capable of 1 : 10's or lower. I think its 4WD drivetrain was what gave it the edge over the Supra, zero wheelspin on launch compared to the mountains of wheelspin the Supra suffers from. Having low downforce also probably helped it set faster times in the 0-1000m since it would have boosted acceleration slightly.
@TRR23123 Жыл бұрын
@@TeaKanji Yeah the S3 understeers a lot, it's a 4WD and it's acceleration is awesome, a nice tune can get rid of the understeer and make it balanced. Even tho it's not the best if you're just starting, It's just more expensive and u could just buy a lancer instead.

great guide, out of curiosity do you have any sort of tunes or recommended cars for 345 and 443hp events? i know you have a bunch of other cars for other power limits (which have all been really good btw) , or do you just recommend taking 295 and 394hp cars respectively for those events.
@TeaKanji Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Most of the best 295hp cars are also the best 345hp cars, especially the likes of the RX-7's, the S2000, the Silvia's and so forth. The Lancer Evo VI RS fits under 345hp and is almost as good as the V, the GT40 needs no introduction, and the base R34 GT-R is perhaps the best of the GT-R's (I believe it gets exactly 345hp with a muffler upgrade). 443hp is pretty much the same deal, though most GT 300's also become available. A well-tuned 295hp car should have no issues beating any 591hp event, so it's up to you if you want to challenge yourself slightly or destroy the competition. If there's any specific cars you want a tune for, I can give it a go.
@indigomizumi Жыл бұрын
I actually have a different method for tuning transmissions. What I do is set the final drive all the way to the right (as short as it goes), put the auto setting to 1 and then widen the final drive. Then I fine tune the individual ratios.
@TeaKanji Жыл бұрын
I'm confused, because that's exactly what the gear trick is. If you're saying my example with the CR-X is too complicated, then yeah, it was. I thought back then that the final gear had to be 2.500 for the closest gears (I had tested it with at least one car and I got faster 0-1000m times with it, I don't know how). I'll correct myself when I make a follow-up video.
@indigomizumi Жыл бұрын
@@TeaKanji I don't remember what the actual gear trick was. I assume there is a way to get even shorter gears than what I do, I'm just stating my preference. A numerically lower gear ratio (including the final drive) means more speed but a higher auto setting in the game means more speed too.
@TeaKanji Жыл бұрын
Yeah, no, you're describing the exact way to get the closest gear ratios in the game. I show it with the Supra at 52:05, then afterwards with the CR-X, but I over-complicated the CR-X example with all of the internal/external gear stuff.
@indigomizumi Жыл бұрын
@@TeaKanji With more powerful cars what I often do is gear it so first gear goes over 100 kph, and then have it even out from there. Depends on the car. The lowest powered cars I can think of that could pull a first gear that tall are the Dodge Concept Car and Renault Clio V6. Both of those can easily handle second gear idle launches stock.
@indigomizumi Жыл бұрын
@@TeaKanji Yeah, what you did with the CR-X is exactly what I do but with a lot of race cars I set the final drive closer to 3.
