Tarkin is too ruthless and bloodthirsty to be Rommel. Tarkin is more like an SS Officer, like Himmler. Snoke is definitely not chiss so thrawn being snoke is out of the question. If we are theorizing that snoke is inhuman, I want to throw the theory out there that he is actually a New Canon version of the Yuuzhon Vong. It would be a good way to bring old canon and new canon together neatly, and we could also get some flavor you backstory about palpatines plan to save the galaxy from the Yuuzhon vong by ruling it, similar to the old canon. I understand the old canon is dead now but they are picking tons of stuff from it to become new again, I'd love for there to be an ulterior motive for the entire Palpatine plan that may humanize him in a way that really would cause us all to look at the villain in a different light. That's supposed to be the whole temptation of the dark side theory, good men become attached to their loved ones and do bad things to help them.

Nothing says he dies in Rebels, that would be a complete waste. Hopefully he just fails to beat them and gets assigned to the outer rim which is how they explained his absence from the original trilogy the first time. That would lay the groundwork for his possible return in episode 8 or 9.
@SeanORaigh8 жыл бұрын
Most of the Original Trilogy takes place in the Outer Rim. It'd make more sense for him to be sent to Wild Space or Unknown Regions.
@darraghtate4408 жыл бұрын
True, spoiler for a 20-something year old book series - Thrawn only "loses" because his Noghri bodyguard turns on him when he finds out about Honoghr. From a military standpoint, he didn't have many major defeats, since he's not afraid of retreating if losing.
@kaleiohu8 жыл бұрын
Matthewgh i'd love to see him wipe out the rebellion, but I'm guessing that's not happening. Maybe the rebels find a way to get him reassigned as their major victory. Surprisingly few characters die in Rebels, I can't think of any of importance. There's no way they bring in Thrawn just to kill him off at the end of the season. The only question is if they plan to push him up to the movies if the response is good.

I don't really understand why the original Clone Wars isn't technically canon anymore, as The Clone Wars was designed to be set in between seasons of the original(after the introduction of assajj ventress, but before Grievous "kidnapped" the Chancellor, etc.). But at least it's still available to watch, as are the other old expanded universe books and comics. At least they're being reprinted.
@Guymanbot978 жыл бұрын
Robert Wild That's what I don't get. I mean yeah they changed the reason why Grievous coughs and changed Assajj's back story a bit. But other than that I don't get how it isn't canon. Heck I think in the movie the reference the finale to the first season of the original.

Jeremy! Please PLEASE watch Clone Wars FiRST. Not only is Rebels a sequel to Clone Wars but... You should just watch the clone wars. The first season is tough to get through and isn't all that great, but by season 2 and especially by season 3 it really hits a stride and is easily up there with some of the best star wars stuff in the franchise. I'm telling you, you will love it. Just to be clear. Rebels is for kids, but it still manages to be pretty interesting and bad ass. Clone Wars was PG, like original trilogy, which means it easily gets as adult if not way more so than the Empire Strikes Back. CRAZY shit happens in Clone Wars. The premier movie and season 1 are hard to get through, but it's worth seeing the series if you are a star wars fan. Do you like things like Avatar: The Last Airbender? Do you like Star Wars? Watch Clone Wars! It's that kind of "holy shit this is actually good!"
@StarlightDragon8 жыл бұрын
Also, another side note. Just because characters introduced in the new expanded universe aren't in the movies, doesn't necessarily mean they are dead. They have made some pretty crazy hints that there might be other reasons certain significant characters don't appear and there might even be a role for them to play in the future movies.

@hopelessent.17008 жыл бұрын
If Disney should revisit then what they should do is to show the Jedi's not depend on midichlorians, instead anyone can be a Jedi knight. Showing why Jedi can't love and become a cardboard character with no depth as the war with the sith go on due to having to much emotional conflict in battle. Idk something like that so that way the prequels slightly looks better.
@LightStreak5678 жыл бұрын
The Malachor planet they visited in Rebels is likely not Malachor V, there are several more planets called Malachor, there is also Malachor III mentioned in the Jedi Consular's story of SWTOR, and since there is a Malachor V and III, there must be a I, II and IV, the one visited in Rebels could be either one of these, and it is against Traya's personality to create a holocron of any kind, given how she feels about the Force and all, and there are other Sith Lords with histories tied to the Malachor planets other than Traya, like Terrak Morrhage, for example.

I was thinking: In a way TFA is actually fan-fiction. Expensive fan-fiction starring the original actors. But still fan-fiction Because it was done after Lucas handed over creative control. And I can still pretend that the Zahn Trilogy is actually canon, rather than TFA. Especially helpful is that here in Germany the books have been adapated into an audio drama starring all the original german voice actors that voiced the original characters in the dubbed version of the movies back in the 70's and 80's. And I really mean ALL of them. Even Mon Mothma has her original german voice in this one. And the new characters like Mara and Thrawn are voiced by very prolific actors in the dubbing business who usually voice actors like Angelina Jolie and Hugh Jackman. So the production value is so high that it actually feels like a movie version of the books.

THANK YOU, I'm so glad to hear someone else say, you don't HAVE to be steeped in every game, cartoon, or spin off movie to be a fan. There comes a point where they are just inundating us with SW. I love the main story line of movies, even though it includes the prequels. And the Thrawn series of books, aside from that meh, some of it's good some of it's bad, but it doesn't mean I have to turn in my sw membership card just because I have never seen Clone Wars the movie or series. Oh, and Thrawn doesn't have to die in Rebels, as the canon clearly shows, he was in the unknown regions during the events of the Orig Trig, so he could easily be the force behind the new order if they want to go that route. Remember it's only Thrawn that is canon, not the events of the Heir to the Empire series. So nothing says he was anywhere to be seen during the time between Jedi and Force Awakens. We can only hope.

Very interested to check the upcoming stuff out as it seems like they're doing right by the fans, and if he shows up in one of the live action movies - even a bit cameo - now I'll know who "the blue guy" is :D.

"fanfiction" look.....the old Legends EU (which I will personally always love more than the new Disney SW) may no longer be canon (or maybe it never even was) but it was certainly never fanfiction. It was officially licensed, commissioned, written by proper published authors and overseen by Lucasfilms. Disney even are still officially publishing the old books/comics under the 'Legends' banner. It's not fanfiction by literally any definition. of the word.
@kirschakos8 жыл бұрын
Indeed though Lucas said they are not canon he was still overseeing some of them and he brought in stuff from those books. so yeah... I agree they were not fanfiction at all!
@inblackestnight92568 жыл бұрын
The way fan fiction is used this way bothers me as well. In my experience, those who refer to the EU in this manner have experienced very little, if any, of it to make such an assessment. There's well-over a thousand novels, comics, junior readers, and games that make up the EU; and while it varies in quality, which is of course subjective, there is bound to be something everyone can enjoy. Most of the EU was indeed canon, as determined through the canon hierarchy created by Leland Chee and approved by George. Lucas never said it wasn't canon (don't think he ever even used the word canon). The only evidence people use to the contrary is one quote by George in 2008 that is taken out of context, and seem to conveniently overlook the decades of evidence that support the EU being part of the greater SW universe.
@kirschakos8 жыл бұрын
Inblackestnight True, you are right!
@KikBlava8 жыл бұрын
It's always puzzled me as to why people called the Expanded Universe 'fanfiction'. I mean by that definition aren't all other books in the world fanfiction too? Isn't Harry Potter or Game of Thrones just expensive fanfiction? And why aren't any non-Star Wars comics out there considered fanfiction? I mean I've read plenty of piss poor Marvel comics that read like fanfiction but no one cares, no one ever says the Marvel comics don't matter only the films. (Which is actually true today considering how shite Marvel comics are) And as for the video games, if KOTOR is ever called fanfiction by someone then Mass Effect is just as much fanfictional as that. Don't get me wrong there were stories in the old EU that felt like fanfiction, but the Thrawn trilogy was never one of those examples. And to me, the new 'canon' Expanded Universe has plenty of moments that feel like over glorified fanfiction, and NO ONE ever calls it out for that. I'm talking about Heir to the Jedi, the Aftermath trilogy, Marvel's new Star Wars comics that had Sana Solo, Han's wife before they were like "Fooled you it's not his wife just someone called Sana Starros." And then there was the Marvel comic Shattered Empire, oh dear god that felt like bad fanfiction. Imagine Poe Dameron's mom going off on a few adventures with Leia and then Luke, yeah that type of fanfiction where it doesn't feel like a natural chapter of the saga. I always thought the 'fanfiction' Dark Horse made was of higher artistic and writing quality and those comics always felt more at home in the Star Wars universe than the new Marvel comics do, even the Legacy comics felt less like fanfiction despite being set 100 years into the future. By the way, The Force Awakens felt like fanfiction too. :P

+MaulSlasher you know how complicated it would be to sort out what they can and cannot do with all the Legends information? It would be really hard to come up with ideas on how to save some story lines where Chewbacca gets killed by a star. +Miqayel Harutyunyan Look, I'm not trying to start a war here since I'm just stating my opinion... but TFA is pretty much high budget fanfiction. It's just a matter of choosing your favourite fanfiction: Legends or Disney.

This was the problem with Thrawn from the moment of his conception in the books. The author does an excellent job of convincing you that he's a tactical genius, but the whole time you're reading you know that it doesn't mean shit because Thrawn doesn't have "the force" on his side and the heroes are just going to pull a victory out of their asses anyway.

Wait... Timothy Zahn is making a canon book? I really hope it'll be good, I mean the sheer amount of things he's not allowed to write in that book is staggering... Also isn't it a bit... weird? Zahn created amazing stories and characters and now ONE a single one has been cherry picked out from the expanded universe... Think about that. That's like J.K. Rowling writing a new book where the villain is based on a fan fic she read. First of is that just something the creators can do? And second. I'm not saying it's bad to have Thrawn being official. I just think it might be weird to have a character that basically doesn't belong in the universe anymore, all the events and characters that gave him meaning and made him do certain actions, say certain lines are basically gone. Depending on how they write him, he won't be the same character, he might just be "Super smart evil officer archetype". I'm fine with all the AU not being canon. Completely, but this can become really freaking convoluted if they bring in people from different books seemingly at random. I think I prefer no AU to only some AU.
@SeanORaigh8 жыл бұрын
They're not just tossing the character in with the expectation that you've read it all. They're building the character again. All of his motivations and everything that led him to say, do, think and feel the things he does is going to be explained.

Mara is one of the few major EU characters I can't see them making canon, since her primary function in the series is that of Luke's wife, which is obviously way too large a role for a tv series. So maybe that's who Laura Dern is playing? If not, the only way they could make Mara work is as the main villain of season 4, while she's still the Emperor's Hand.

Hate the fact that so many people are just accepting the fact that decades of literary work by hundreds of authors in the Star Wars canon are now null and void, referred to as little more than 'fan fiction'. Such an insanely dick move on Lucas' part to sell the rights and not stipulate that Disney could not erase the credibility of thousands of published works for their own greedy desires. A fucking atrocity.
@woodulike2no9898 жыл бұрын
Problem is, I've read Star War fan fiction that was far better than some of those books. I hated that it erased the Thrawn Trilogy, but that was about all that was worth saving out of all those stories.
@ManSeekingMeaning8 жыл бұрын
+woodulike2 no I'd have to disagree. A lot of the EU covered fantastic and gritty and sometimes emotional story arcs in the sprawling SW Galaxy. From Knights of the Old Republic and Revan, to the multi generational descendants of the Skywalkers and Solos in the New Republic, to a lot of the Sith and Dark Sun and Mandalorian side stories, and even a few intense comics like Star Wars Tales and the unique Jedi vs Sith. It's callous and ignorant to say decades worth of massive material is all shit just because you read a few bad stories. I've read plenty of crap in the previous canon, sure, but that's hardly justification to write everything off altogether.
@woodulike2no9898 жыл бұрын
A few bad stories? We'll have to just agree to disagree. Not only was it ridiculous to have Luke fall to the dark side in Dark Empire, it was ridiculous he was pulled back to the light so easily. The Courtship of Leia was atrocious in how they portrayed Leia even considering an arranged marriage, the Jedi Academy series was ludicrous having Luke and his students against a fucking ghost - should have called it Star Wars: Ghostbusters. And how many times did they have to go against some giant superweapon? The Sun Crusher, The Dark Saber, the shell prototype of the original Death Star? In another book Luke has to fight some kind of crystalline enemy from the inside, then falls in love with another force ghost who takes over the body of a regular person and loses her abilities? To top it off, the premise of the Vong is a direct violation of the Force as set out by the first movie. It's supposed to be an energy field created by ALL living things, yet the Jedi can't sense them in the Force, nor can they sense any Vong technology which is all biological? Never mind the the story of how the Dark side is an actual living entity named Abaloth? I'm sorry the hard core fans of the books felt betrayed, but I'd have done the exact same thing as Disney: wipe the slate clean and tell stories that make sense and stay true to the characters as established in the original trilogy.

It's nice to see that he won't be washed out of the universe, but also sad that this probably will exclude him from the movies. But, at this point, I just hope they make him as the badass he should be (which I kind of doubt because an OP Grand Admiral Thrawn would make this series ends on a very dark note and... well, it is still a Disney kids show, so I'm not expecting that).

The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn are seriously the reason I love Star Wars. Thrawn doesn't have to be dead in Force Awakens. In the Thrawn books we learned he had been assigned to the Outer Rim by the Emperor when the action of the original SW trilogy took place. There's no reason why that couldn't have happened in the new SW timeline.

That point Jeremy made about why characters have pupils was life changing. Not the humanizing bit, but the fact that _you need to know when he's looking at someone out the corner of his eye_. I'm amateur writer, but that point was so interesting. The _corner eye glance_ really is an important personality trait, it shows someone thinks there better than someone as opposed to some who will completely turn their body to face someone. Or I'm just over thinking it lol Also I agree with Jeremy about characters (usually antagonists) who are just there to be _better_. I think that's why I love Hans Landa (_Inglorious Basterds_), Kahn (_Wrath of Kahn) and other such characters.
