yea i remember when my dad got me a size large 3x 29er hardtail in eighth grade in 2018. Once the pandemic hit, I started to ride more mountain bike-like trails on that bike. As I broke parts, I just replaced them with parts you guys reviewed and your installation videos helped me a lot when bike shop fees were high at the time. 5years later my bike is still going strong thanks to you guys! My dad got that bike for 900 cad or 650 Usd back in 2018, id say that modern bikes, like this canyon are becoming more affordable. it was a 3x8 (square tapered) with an okay coil fork,qr axels, tektro hydraulic 160 brakes. for just a bit more now a days you can get a bike with a 1x(hollow), a bargain fork with rebound, and a nice brake setup!

I have to say that the jump from a $350 to $700 bike is massive and the thing that is never that obvious is the quality of the frame will be significantly higher. They genuinely are worth the extra if you don’t want to spend every weekend fixing/replacing something

I'm kinda thinking that this coming with this particular coil fork is a plus. I mean, it is highly adjustable for what it is and it'll be sturdy and almost maintenance free for years and if it's also light enough and feels good, then I'd say it's a winner for a beginner. 😜

I bought that same fork as an upgrade for my daughter's bike. It's by far the best coil fork I have used! Think I paid $145 it. Works flawlessly on cross country trails, like the goat on Nebo, very smooth. Can't wait to see the finished project.

Suntour really makes good BUDGET coil forks. I bought myself a second hand neglected Suntour XCR32 Coil for about $16, serviced it and bought a new spring for it (the old spring was broken/cut in half) and it bounces and feels like brand new again! The only issue I got was the lockout since it was busted by the previous owner but who needs a lockout anyways aye? HAHA! Lovin' the frequent uploads John and Jeremiah, keep them coming!

@Mikky Bozzy well it depends what you are looking for. I am well aware that this channel deals mostly with Walmart bike and sometimes very entry level bike shop bikes. Nothing wrong with that. Though I have my reserves about the crazy prices of bikes these days.....the truth stands that Canyon for a direct to consumer bike shop grade bike company is very good value with in the industry. There bikes are of the quality of Giant, Trek, Cannondale Ect... and are often hundreds of dollars cheaper then those companies. The only one to hold up to them is polygon which is Phenominal value. That being said though, for us in Canada we don't have a in country dealer so ordering Canyon means it comes from Germany and the Duty taxes are bonkers. Anyway, you have a point....not providing simple pair of pedals is rather cheap on there point....but are also talking about a bike that is bought by people who often chose their own pedals lol😉

i have a 2002 Manitou Black coil fork with rebound control, compression setting, and adjustable travel from 80-100mm. just under 4lbs. works as good now as the day i installed it. i also have a 2006 Marzocchi dirt jam pro coil/air fork. the coil is so "hard" i don't have to use air. lol. canyons are pretty sick. great video guys.

I just got the Stoic 2. Haven’t gotten a chance to really rip it yet, but I have to say the 34mm SR Suntour fork is pretty impressive. I’m a big guy (280lbs), and I didn’t have to max the fork psi to set the sag properly, which I’ve had issues with on smaller air forks. I think Canyon is going to get big in America, you can’t beat the quality/price mix they have going on with the direct to consumer model.

9:57 Finally you your hands on one. I have this one on my bike. But clutch eventually wears out, so if it's noisy despite servicing it, then replace it. Usually I run trough a few clutches trough the life of the RD, but how many depends on use of course.

I've got that suntour x1 coil fork, Mine doesn't have preload adjustment but it feels like i have one, i can also tune the lockout knob millimetres to millimetres to serve as a preload adjustment. It also feels like an air fork, other people think it's air too. It's kinda heavy but doesn't bother me at all considering it has a steel stanchions. It has hydraulic lockout so I lock it on lower travel when I'm coasting paved road or climbing steep climbs. The highlights of the fork: the durability, been hit by a speeding motorcycle sideways Almost running about 60kph ang the fork only got small dent on the lowers that doesn't affects the performance. Hopefully toby won't forget about the 50hr of ride lower leg service/ greasing to avoid early stanchion fades, been lazy servicing mine for about 5 months and got my consequences of just light stanchion fade no mud or anything inside but grease dried out😅

10:43 Keep in mind the Corona virus situation resulted in shortages and Shimano had to shut down some of their factories, and parts were held up in the sues channel, and the shortages lasted quite long time, eventually it got back to normal, or almost for most part. So unusually spec could be found, like Sunrace, Microshift and so on on several bike brands. But would be nice if they changed the spec sheet. some did, but this might have been a mistake.The Shimano M5100 cassette would shift smoother and be quieter.

As always, spot on in your review's. I also think that this bike is pretty good for the price. Nice frame, with lot's of room for upgrades. In general, Canyon's are decent bikes and well priced compared to other brands. Sure, you dont get the latest SRAM $600+ groupset or Magura 4 pot brakes. But IMHO, who really need's a $600+ SRAM groupset or Magura brakes? Apart for a full on racer or a trail show-off. But still, it has a decent groupset. I would have like an air fork also. Personally I prefer the progressiveness of air springs compared to linear coils, not to mention the weight saving. But that's just me, and my size and riding style dont play well with springs. Didn't notice it at first run but centerlock disc, meh! This kind of suck's, but I guess you can always get an adapter.

Cool video. The derailleur being separated from the derailleur hanger eliminates the hanger or the derailleur being bent in shipping. Whenever I ship any bike I detach the derailleur. Also wolf man, sometimes the components might be different then the spec, because of supply chain and availability issues. T.J in ColoRADo

8:00 before you comment about him saying seat post tube, technically he is right, seat post with different materials exist, like carbon post with Alu top, and so on, so the tube it self is alu here. but unlikely rest would be different, but technically possible. On some posts top part is bonded to the seat post tube. I think this one is all Alu, so if he would put the magnet at the top of it it would show that.

13:43 Damping does not have anything to do with air, it's to do with hydraulics. It's a hydraulic damper, adjusting rebound damping turns a tube in another tube with holes, making the holes bigger or smaller, limiting or increasing the flow. So yes a coil fork with rebound damping is possible. there is no reason it sohuld not be. But the forks without a damper might have a lockout, but then it's a mechanical lock out, plastic teeth that interlock once it's switched on, but those can fail, but a a proper hydraulic lockout has blow off, so you won't ruined the damper with it locked out.

I called it! Knew it was a Canyon by the tape. Edit: that seat is a torture device. They changed the spec on my Stoic 2, got a sunrace 11-42 instead of the spec’d 11-46 of another brand. I’m doubting the brakes are real Shimano as they have no markings and are shaped differently than a set of mt200 I had. I just swapped in the known Shimano set.

Still have a few suntour coil forks around, they're all XCR, all of them have a rebound knob. Most of the lower end suntour steer tubes are all steel, even Raidon. Think they went cheap with the sunrace MZ80 cassette cause the shimano 12 speed are all using microspline hub and cassette. The RT26 rotors are good, the 56 and 66 are even better cause they offer the same performance, but lighter. Fun fact, shimano M5100 and M6100 shifter, rear derailleur, and cranksets are all interchangeable. M5100 derailleur can use a M6100 shifter. M5100 shifter can run w/a M6100 derailleur.

I think that fork is rebranded xcr32 rl, because suntour said they will be renaming it. It is kinda decent. I changed mine to a oil bath instead of vaseline and I added foam rings. Works decent.

Rebound/compression/lockout is just all damper. The spring side can either be coil or air. Same concept to rear shocks.

Funny thing, never had a problem with my Canyon bikes, but my expensive trek made a few problems in the beginning: like rusty and shot bearings after about 5 rides, creaking, chain was slipping on the smallest cog and the rear axle works itself loose. The paintjob is also flaky when damaged...

21:50 if it was 10-51 it would have to have Microspline, so that means different freehub, and if the hub brand don't support that then you need a different hub. but most brands offer all of the freehub options. but if it's a cheap old school style hub it will likely not have that. 10 to 51 is not possible on HG, which menas HyperGlide which is what you have worked with and is still the most common standard.

Really nice bike, especially for the price. I love that pie plate size cassette. It should probably have a tapered head tube but not a deal breaker. I'm not sure if for $700 I wouldn't give up some of the nice features for support from my LBS though. As always, a great review.

Jeez and to think I paid almost the same price for my GT Aggressor Pro which came with a square tapered BB, mechanical disc brakes, a 3x8 with a microshift derailleur with no clutch, a heavy ass sr suntour bottom of the barrel coil fork, a 34mm head tube and some no-name tires. This Canyon is an absolute deal and I'm officially pissed about what i paid for my GT. Also regarding that fork, if Toby decides to upgrade make sure to tell him about the SR Suntour upgrade program, it knocks $100 off a new SR Suntour fork.

13:43 Part coil part air that's something Marzocchi did long time ago, it was a coil fork but had air in it, so had both, point was to make it feel like a coil but have more suitability. But this is not a thing anymore. But many air forks have a coil in them, it's the negative spring.

15:19 for a coil fork?, not really, more like compared to garbage forks. the sound you hear is the oil moving trough the ports in the damper, the noise changes depending how open the ports are, thus how much damping you adjusted it to. But if you hear clunk and loud bangs, something is broken, I did not hear any of that here.

I saw a vid on Mapdec's channel, where he had to correct mistakes of Canyon assembly mechanic did, so they can definitely mess up, that seemed to be a fluke one person likely new at the job. But usually their bikes come assembled properly. But he runs a repair shop, he does not sell bikes, but this was all covered under Canyon's warranty and he did it for Canyon. But I know there is a service centre in Norway, so here I could send it there if I had a canyon I guess, but I work on my own bikes anyway.

22:03 the original shimano deore 12 speed, or slx or XT cassettes are 10-51, maybe they ran out and threw in a different cassette. BTW, what brand is that cassette, I'm glad it shifts good, and be good to know the brand because it worked great with the gruopset. I had a generic Amazon 11-50 cassette on these groupsets and was never able to dial it in. On 3 different gruposet, 1 SLX, and 2 deore.

4:05 - I've noticed a lot of direct to consumer brands doing the rear mech in a bag these days... I think it's to prevent bent hangars/mechs during shipping. When I got my Bird Zero 29, that had both the mech and the hanger detached for shipping. It was all indexed perfectly when I bolted it on, so I'd imagine they did it before taking it off for shipping 👍

Oh, and the Rapid Rob is a re-use of the old Racing Ralph tread pattern... I've used both before, definitely a summer tyre, not so good in mud or slippery conditions but my god they roll superfast in dry conditions!

They’re made in Taiwan my dude. Speculation is that the frames are made by Giant due to the Taiwan angle, and the quality.

Nice video. After hearing you say they switched the cassette to Sunrace, did the bike come with Shimano brakes and rotors, Shimano crank, and Shimano wheels, or were they all swapped for compatible ones? I was considering buying this bike.

Better it's not a 10-51 Shimano since it would need a MicroSpline freehub. The SunRace 11-51 will be an HG freehub, much more universal.

Happened to me. Switched out 5 components (similar to the bike in this video). I can understand 1 or 2. But 5 is way too much even with the price I paid ($500 + free shipping).

I kinda think it's overrated for the average rider. Maybe not for the professional, but how many professionals are riding $600 dollar bikes and watching Wolftick Videos 😉😆 If we did an episode on, "is a tapered headtube overrated," we would have people freaking out for sure.🤯😜
