Grand Canyon Railway 4960 Steam Locomotive

Rode it the first year of operation with a steam locomotive and non-air conditioned cars. Rode it years later in an air conditioned streamlined car pulled by a bio-fuel diesel. The wye leading into Grand Canyon Village allows them to back the train into the historic ATSF depot and make a fast getaway at departure time. Riding by rail and staying overnight at the Grand Canyon should be on everyone’s bucket list!

Now you have to come back and ride behind the steam in air conditioned cars! I was surprised they wye'd the train when it came in, but it did make for a cool departure. I'd rather shoot video of trains rather than ride them but we did stay at the Yavapai Lodge that night which was very cool. The next morning we walked the trail from the lodge to the South Rim to the geology museum. Very beautiful and memorable.

Mainstay for steam at Grand Canyon Railway, #4960. #29 does get to come out many times though and is a sister to our #33 we used to own at Hocking Valley Scenic Railway.

From what I understand 29 is going into storage in october, there is gonna be a doubleheader on her last day of operation. It was publicised in trains magazine in the 4014 issue but the advert didn't give a reason for her storage. It seems to be due to her boiler time running out, but she did get a hefty overhaul in 2016

29 will be put in storage until further notice after the boiler certificate expires. Thats what Eric Hadder told me

It's a shame that they GCRY Scrapped 4960's original CB&Q tender. They could have restored it and re-coupled it to 4960 so that way, it would retain a majority of its historical authenticity. Don't get me wrong, i also like her current tender; but by scrapping her original one, they've pretty much erased her historical value and authenticity. But truth be told, i would love for them to one day for maybe a special photo charter; cosmetically restore her to her original CB&Q livery including re-position her headlight to the top of the smokebox, re-position her bell forward of the sand-dome, re-paint her smokebox silver & re-install her original CB&Q number plate & 5 chime whistle.

Do the steam locomotives on the Grand Canyon railway only operate once a month and is it normally on weekends. Also, I heard this October there will be a photo run with number 29 I heard from a magazine and heard that the locomotive will be going out of service. I wonder if its true because I hope it isn't
