I made this mod to out '19 Imagine back in June. We took our grandnephew camping for a few days right after and it made an amazing difference. The noise level dropped by a ridiculous amount, and we kept the trailer in the low 70's for the entire trip. Did I mention that it was 105+ outside for most of the time we were out? The A/C actually cycled off a few times during the day. Worth every nickel of the $12 I paid for the foam board (I already had the foil tape.) Good job!

I love this idea. You've gotten some great responses below that validates the effectiveness of the mod. It's way cold in Utah now and my Momentum is covered. I'm marking this to do in the Spring. Huge thanks for the great video!!

Just did this mod today after watching your video. One difference is I centered the teepee on the close-off board, even though the output hole below the fan is not centered. I discovered they did this intentionally because the air blasts more on one side than the other, making the dividing point the exact center of the close-off board, not the center of the output hole. Much better flow now and even distribution front to back. Much quieter as well. I started with a hot 32ft trailer in 103* temps and it was down to 79* in 30 minutes. Well today I decided to do this DIY upgrade. Went to a local box store and spent less than $40.00. I took my time plus the weather was in my favor. I cut out the flow diverter (Teepee ) to aloud more flow for the return air. I also rapped it with sound Kilmat sound proofing. Can’t say it was much better, can’t do much for the return . But the difference in the flow of air is great. You saved me from spending $180.00. Thanks so much for the video. Keep them coming.

Excellent resource! I bought the materials and followed along and with the video and it was a simple and straightforward modification. The unit is "somewhat quieter" but noise was not my primary motivation. The air flow from the vents is AT LEAST TWICE AS FORCEFUL as it was before the mod, especially in the bath and bedroom which are farthest from the AC unit. I hoped for improvement but this exceeded my expectations and will be a huge asset in the Texas heat!

I did this over 2 years ago, used foil tape to seal everything. What a difference it makes. this is such an easy modification and for around 30 dollars did both ACs in the unit, much cooler and a lot less noise

This was a great mod. Had the same issue. We could barely hear the TV as the unit is in the middle of the room. Just finished and it's amazing!!! Keep it up! We are full time and my wife is a travel nurse. So we love all kinds of mods.

Even doing this still allows turbulent air flow which prevents optimum efficiency so buying the Air Flow System will improve things even more.

My little big dog Honda gen. has worked in the past but a no go on this tripp. I found this pod last night, 10pm 80deg. sweatin mess. Today after my morning routine about 1 o'clock sat back to get ready for the daily heat stroke. I remembered your vid, which I watched from start to fin. Thought, what have I got to lose. got the filters off, they were clean. Dropped the two panel's and got hit with an air sunami. my fan was running strong. what a big, big air restriction. you don't think? Went to the thermostat, BINGO!! The compressor kicked in! Great video I followed your instructions and the mod went great. I also foil taped everything for a tight seal. HUGE difference in my air flow especially the bedroom. One added note: I offset the diffuser TEPEE by 1" off center to favor the bedroom and this worked great. Thanks again!

Followed easy video. Working great so far had to do some extra trimming, there was some foam insert that stuck out, about half an inch, but just trimmed it back so everything fit well and rested it well. Working great thanks for the great video. With this Texas heat this is a must.

Great vid. Thanks for posting. I noticed a 1/2" gap between the blower fan and the coil duct. I adjusted it to be as close as possible without rubbing. That alone increases airflow and efficiency.

I did mine a little different. Instead of the Teepee I cut 3 pieces all of them were 14" X 7 1/2". On the top two I cut openings for the air to flow down. I used Nashua Aluminum tape with mastic. Sealed it up real good with plenty of aluminum tape. Taped inside the vents near the plenum. Added and taped the side and bottom piece and buttoned it up. I expected some improvement but never expected the improvement would be so significant. I expected double the airflow but it was blowing out of the vents at least 5X, wouldn't be surprised if it is 10X stronger! When I cranked it up it lowered the air temperature agni 5 degrees in 30 minutes! Last night the AC ran nonstop all night long now the longest it runs its about 30 minutes. The tape was about $25 and the insulation board with aluminum on one side was $15. It took about 4 hrs, that includes the time it took to get the materials at Home Depot and have a donut and cup of coffee. So, half of that, about 2 hrs was actually all it took. Very simple and it helps to have a stool or small ladder. Thanks for sharing these tips!

Hi Folks, Nice Idea. Over the 20yrs we RVed, I modded the AC's on our 4 RV's by Insulating the Exterior of the AC Air Boxes in a similar way, and sealing the interior areas as you've mentioned. Also bundled the wiring and moved the center cross-member in the Intake chute to maximize the Intake Air Flow. In addition, I closed off the air exits at the AC Unit to maximize the Air Flow into the Duct work and reduce the noise level at the AC unit. Double Insulating just might give you even more cooling benefits. Stay Cool. Harold

Don't know if someone else has mentioned it or not but that whistling is the air squeezing between that outer cover that has the dump and filter panels and the inner plenum panel, around the edges. I found one spot that was the main culprit and added a thin layer of silicone and that got rid of it immediately.

Well, I attempted this AC modification on my new Shadow Cruiser today. I have a Coleman Mach 15 AC and it doesn’t blow very much air through the vents resulting in a hot camper. I used one inch thick foam board and immediately ran into some issues. My plenum is kinda shallow at just under 5 inches which caused the 45 degree angle cuts not to work. I ended up chiseling away the foam until it gave me the correct fit from the exhaust port to the duct entrance. It wasn’t pretty looking but I taped it all up before I installed it. My plenum came from the factory a mess. Nothing is clean cut and there is a lot of overlap from the wood in the ceiling where the AC is mounted. I had to cut, carve and shave my foam boards to fit. I ended up using a lot of tape but I accomplished the direct line from my exhaust port to the duct entrance. There wasn’t much room left for the teepee so I omitted it. After it was all together I excitedly turned on the AC and to my surprise, I had a lot more air moving through the ducts and out of the vents. I’m so glad you made this video and thank you for sharing it with campers like me.

We have an older motorhome, and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t look like that on the inside. I’m still going to see if there is something Similar I can do, to help. They actually make duct knives that are very easy to use. That foil tape needs pressure applied to it with a credit card or a squeegee or it will eventually come loose. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to fish hvac tape out of rv duct.

I agree except that I am at a campground with poor electrical. I have had the startup capacitor on each unit go bad. The way to check if the AC problem is the startup capacitor is to reach up and spin the "squirrel cage." You can no longer do that.

I watched your video in my RV today as I was doing this mod. Thank you for making it! I did it to both AC units in my Reflection 311BHS. What a difference! The air flow coming out of the ceiling ducts is so much better. I should have checked the decibel reading of the AC's before starting this project but I do believe they sound quieter. RV Airflow kits are $170. I would've needed two of them. I paid $28 for foam board and tape. It took me a little over 3 hours to do both AC units but I saved a lot of money!

I have just a small toy hauler and no air ducting throughout the toy hauler. Has anybody done anything with a non-duck unit to make it run more efficient. Curious if anybody has and if there's anything to do to make them run better an more efficient.

I think I will be trying this. Although I have a 3d printed version in my mind. Does the bottom of the horizontal piece line up with the bottom of the duct opening? If not maybe a foot on the teepee would help a little more. You could also notch the divider to match the teepee, and cut the bottom some. That would add more return airflow and use more filter sq inches. If I am picturing it correctly. My camper is in storage right now.

Hey M Moore, We are going to try and answer this as best as we understand what you’re asking. 1) for us the bottom horizontal piece of foam board sat approximately a half an inch below the opening of the duct. i’m not sure how that would translate for 3-D printing, however with the appropriate measurements I could see where that would free up some more airflow into the intake. I am Magine that 3-D printing as much skinnier than a 1 inch piece of foam. 2. You can notch underneath the TP. However I would imagine that would be very disruptive from the airflow standpoint and maybe a curved carve out would work better hopefully that answers your questions! If not we can try again! Here's a suggestion, if you have the washable screens for the a/c inlet, spray them lightly with Pledge or Endust and then when it's time to clean them use Dawn dish soap

I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

Wow that’s quite the mod. We made sure to put the ducting foil tape in all our vents but hadn’t thought about putting anything actually up in the A/C. Have you guys noticed a significant difference? If so, by how much?

We absolutely love this mod! Before we did this we kept our thermostat around 68 for all three! Now we can run on two air conditioners and we have it set for 73. It's incredible, and it's quieter! It's noticeably better!

I have a very similar (if not the same) a/c unit (Coleman Mach) in our trailer. Just took the cover off and to our surprise there were NO black ducking covers (the two black covers that snap onto the ducting inlets on each side). They're both literally missing. Do you think I'll need those? I'm wondering if I can seal it off enough to not need them? Or perhaps I should buy them...

Good evening! Ductless is a challenge. We are not specifically aware of any solution for that. We don't think this will help it get quieter but you can check to make sure you don't have any gaps and seal them with HVAC tape. It can make it more efficient. Sorry!

I bought the materials and set out to modify the AC in my fifth wheel today. Unfortunately the blower motor is mounted in such a way that my chute is on the right side instead of straight out of the middle. The return air looks just like yours but if I built a throat in mine it would cut off event on the right side and only be able to throat to the left side. I even checked the cool air website and they don’t make one that would fit my AC. That’s just my luck.

Just did this to my Coleman mach unit. Seems to be working and a few decibels quieter, about 5. My question is that you lose the two big vents on the face plate of the unit. Seems like we lose a lot of cooling without those. Do you feel like the over all new airflow is good enough to make up for the loss of those vents? Fun job.

When you were measuring the inside of your unit, it was very dark, use a flash light so we can see.

You did a great job and I applaude you!. However it should be noted with the RV Airflow mod it increases RETURN air flow. The increased airflow uses MORE of the inlet filter and prevents the coils from freezing over. More air flow means less operation and operation costs. However- It should be noted you saved everyone a lot of money with your mod. How much will you save in the long run if you had purchased a RV Airflow kit?? It would take a lot of testing to prove that.

Well i did it, mine was different than yours even though is a colman mach and 15000 dementions different but i would say just feeling of the out put at the vents all over the tralier its about 3 times the out put. Thanks again

I would cut the 45 on the insulation panel first. Before cutting them into the pieces you size to length and width. It’s easier to cut a large panel than small pieces. But a really great video thanks 🙏

So great. Thanks for posting. I wonder if it would help to use some foam rubber tape on the edges to get a good seal between the styrofoam and the steel case. I am definitely going to build one of these. I thought about making ducts with the 3D printer and then filling in around them with some spray foam. Your design looks very quick and easy to build.

Thank you! We thought about using additional materials to ensure it was an airtight seal as well. Ultimately we just ended up using the HVAC tape. We are seeing tremendous increases in output! If you do end up modifying it to be better please post it!!! Happy modding!

How high does the TeePee end up off the foam base3? Thanks for showing this! I am sure not as efficient as a molded piece of foam with smooth air flow paths, but much much less expensive and a much better value!

It was approximately 3.5 inches up from the base. I agree that it's probably not the most aerodynamic but after covering all the surfaces with HVAC tape I can tell you without a doubt that it works! We used to keep all 3 A/Cs between 69-70 to be comfortable, now all are set at 74 and it is noticeably cooler. Also the A/C's don't run as often. It's great.

@G Kerr it does not stick up into the opening. It sits about an inch underneath it. I wish we had a scientific answer as to how high but I just kept messing the the cuts until I knew it was short enough to not stick up into the opening.
