I am retired and my wife is retiring soon and we have put our previous retirement RV plans on indefinite HOLD, specifically because of the tsunami of RV problem's that seem to be increasing every year over the last decade. We had several new campers and trailers (Four Winds and Jayco) in the 80's and 90's when our boys were young and we loved all of them and used them extensively and I don't remember any real issues with any of them. I would not trust anything coming out of almost any of the current RV manufacturers and basically have to gamble and cross my fingers that I got the rig that was put together correctly and that someone MIGHT make it right if there is something wrong. I just don't need that aggravation. If I want to gamble I will go to Vegas, not to an RV dealer.

I agree with you. We bought an older Airstream (1986) which was well taken care of by previous owners. While camping over the past few years, we've met some other Airstream owners who have trailers built in the last 2-10 years that have told us to "Hang On" to that older Airstream as they don't build em like that anymore after sharing with us all the problems they've had with their new trailer. So, I think this pattern of poor quality control exists in many RV or trailer manufacturers.

Glad Grand Design stood behind their product. Axles, frames and the strength of the floor are huge factors with toyhaulers. You have to check your axles and frame carefully. And you have to be careful not to overgross your trailer which is easy to do. I got out of toyhaulers and went back to ultralite travel trailers because all I was hauling was surfboards and bicycles. Our current ultralite "couples coach" a '19 Keystone Passport 2520 GTWE has two 3500 pound axles and a GVWR of 7000 pounds so it's not under axled. It holds my surfboards in the front basement and a Honda 2000 generator in the RR compartment which is why I chose the floorplan. All systems go, I just had to replace some staples with RV screws on interior trim and replace screws with SS bolts and washers on the plastic wheel well fenders which are famous for coming loose. I run with empty black and grey tanks and and a half tank of water unless I'm dry camping so it's usually running about 6000 pounds towing, an easy tow for my half ton.

They have clearly disregarded one of the main tenents of TQM (Total Quality Management) which was popular in the 1980s: the cost of doing the job right the first time is much smaller than having to do the repairs on a faulty product. Regarding warranties. A company issues a warranty for a set period, then a year or two down the road the company folds and those warranty claims wind up in a bankruptcy court and are discharged. One should ask these manufacturers before hand if those warranties are underwritten by an insurance company for the full term originally stated, in case the manufacturer fails. It is what you don't know that can hurt you a whole lot.

I think GD saw a firestorm of bad press affecting their bottom line as in no new sales. I am really glad they took responsibility, but I wonder if is a thing where YT beat them over the head by numbers, but what about little guys with no access to YT and the sway of that influence. They HAVE to communicate with customers to resolve issues, because if they do not communicate directly, they will receive communications indirectly by BAD word of mouth, which will sink their ship. Tell the stockholders to take a back seat, because we are going to do it right and it will cost a lot, but in the long run, it will be WAY more profitable, having a sound product, happy customers and an empty service department because of no problems. I was a design engineer for a coach company, and I can tell you a significant amount of lost profit was caused by visits to the service department to fix stuff that SHOULD have been addressed on the line, before the coach ever left the production, not to mention customers who had to travel BACK to Oregon to have repairs done that should NEVER have been needed, if the machine was built properly to start with.

From what I've been reading and hearing, the firestorm got Winnebago's attention, and GD was told to clean up their act "or else" because it was costing them money! I'll bet since they (Winnebago) picked them (GD) up because of their quality and reputation.

I had a 2018 GD Imagine that had the Lippert suspension mounted out of alignment resulting in a catastrophic tire failure. The damage included punching a hole through the floor as well as exterior trim damage and a wheel destroyed. That ended up being covered by warranty after I made a reasonable request. I sold that trailer in 2023 and replaced it with a new 2022 Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser, purchased in December 2023. Warranties were effective upon purchase date. In May 2023 after approximately 2000 mile being towed, the right spring broke and put me stranded near San Francisco on Memorial Day weekend. After calling Gulfstream and Lippert, I was able to get warrenty repairs made and to continue my travels to Oregon. Except. The left spring was fatigued to the point of near failure, too. After proving I had not overloaded the suspension (Cat Scale receipts) I arranged lower cost repairs at a shop in Eugene, OR, I requested that both springs be upgraded from 2000 lb rated three-leaf springs, to 2200 lb rated four-leaf springs with labor costs covered, too. Lippert agreed to this proposal and now I am back on the road, feeling safe and satisfied at last. I believe I benefitted from your channel and the network of RVers who speak out in support of one another and the RV lifestyle, full-time or camping only. We are all in this together! Thanks, Liz!🙏🤗

I have a feeling that Thor is going to have to defend a Class action law suit soon. Especially when there are $800,000 Class A Tiffin units involved. And a major lawsuit needs to happen. A big RV company has to take a massive hit for the entire industry to improve and for the US government to step up and create regulations. You don’t see this happening to tractor trailers hauling heavy freight. Grand Design probably thought it’s cheaper to fix the defects than defend a massive Class action lawsuit. They would have definitely lost the law suit and they would have gone bankrupt. I can’t imagine anyone buying a RV from a bankrupt company that failed to fix their defective products.

10:36 the problem is the industry won’t change, because there is no competition. The big companies buy up all the little companies to satisfy their shareholders. There’s no longer competition because there’s only a couple of companies that own everything. Until people start voting with their wallet, this sort of thing won’t change. This is a great video, but this is just the beginning. This shows how big corporations have to listen to social media instead of threatening their customer base. They keep trying to threaten people like Liz with cease and desist letters, but social media, and where the people have a bigger voice. Keep up the good work and keep voting with your wallet and then and only then, things will change.

Several items caught my attention, but these stood out: 1) Lippert has a monopoly on frames/chassis for trailers, doors, appliances (Furrion), and RV furniture (Thomas Paine), and 2) People load the storage with a lot of unnecessary "stuff" without paying attention to the payload capacities or axle/tire ratings. Number 2 is quite concerning since many RV owners I know have never weighed their loaded trailers to see if they are over the GVWR. That was the first thing we did with our 2015 Palomino SolAire7 25 ft travel trailer. The unloaded weight matched the sticker unloaded weight, so that was good. That gave us 3240 lbs payload, which gives us a lot of breathing room. Since we're looking for a new 5th-wheel in the sub 30-ft range, we're looking for payloads greater than 2500 lbs. There are not too many units out there that meet that weight criteria. We normally travel light (tools, clothes, a small amount of food, 1/3 tank of fresh water), so that should help. We were lucky with our current unit but I am wondering if the manufacturers weigh units as they come off the assembly line and generate the stickers from those numbers. I certainly hope they do but one can never tell for sure. If they don't, how do they the actual weights?
@Javelinjoe733 ай бұрын
We have had a couple 5th wheels campers, when doing repairs I had to get into the walls. I don’t know how these stayed together going down the road. Tiny wall studs, joints stapled together, sloppy, cheap construction.

I am a first time RV owner when I bought a new 2022 Thor Scope. I used it the first summer but then it had 4 recalls and parts that were broken from the factory. General RV did some repairs during the second summer. The third summer (right now), I used it once but it has spent June, July, and August in the repair shop again. 2 summers in a row I have not been able to use it. I contacted Thor and told them they need to buy it back but they won't even guarantee that they can help me in any way.
@kal70493 ай бұрын
Your post may get lost as just a reply. Contact Liz directly for help with your Thor. I have a feeling that Thor is going to have to defend a Class action law suit soon. Especially when there are $800,000 Class A Tiffin units involved. And a major lawsuit needs to happen. Some RV company has to take a massive hit for the entire industry to improve and for the US government to step up and create regulations. You don’t see this happening to tractor trailers hauling heavy freight.

@@kal7049 Mostly all of the RV assembly companies in the Elkhart County, Indiana region are guilty of this poor and in some cases dangerous manufacturing or better yet assembly. Stop buying anything made in elkhart County, Indiana and maybe then we will start seeing some change! The Indiana Mafia (as many of us call them) have been getting away with this for decades and now they are being publicly exposed. Start looking into RVs made in other states like Oregon or California who also build their own frames to a better standard. RV employees also need to start a workers union to fight back the abuses they are also going through in many cases. Remember this also, RV assembly companies and dealership are in this mess together because they created it together and they do nothing but deflection and delay. I have no sympathy, knowing what I know now, for dealerships either. I sure as hell hope Lazy Days does close their doors and RV assembly companies like Grand Design have to buy back all that inventory that they are stuffing dealerships with.

So, get rid of all the dealers and go factory direct like escape trailers, apparently sells direct to the public

Good to hear there are those in the industry that are beginning to pay attention. Personally, if I were running one of those manufacturers and running into these issues habitually, I would make the move to bring the frame production back in house where I would not have a third party supplier, diminishing the quality of the product in order to make a higher profit.
@Patrick_Armendarez3 ай бұрын
There clearly needs to be more competition for Lippert. That alone drives better quality. And I have seen some other frame makers starting to get increased orders. RV manufacturers need to drive more parts and frames competition.

A few taughts. Thank God they dont built boats like motor homes. Yes both of them go through abuse. But boats don't have an excuse like rv's. Second as much as Id like not to see government mandate. If they don't make them liable like our cars. It will not get solved. Because they have no accountability at all on them.

Kicking and screaming but so happy they stepped up. It is the best business decision to do that. When I was in the service business I learned early on the best course of action was to ask the customer what they wanted and then do it. I so enjoyed the shock on there face when I said happy to do that. Want to talk about a customer for life and a great advocate. You can't buy that kind of advertising. Thanks for what you are doing Liz!!!

Lippert owns half of Elkhart county and the RV industry as a whole is in the crapper, all RV’s are slapped together. They push and push to get the numbers. In 35 years of working in the industry I’ve seen it all. None of them are built for longevity, PERIOD!

At these prices, I'm surprised the Chinese haven't set up sales and warranty repair here for their own RV brands. But their focus is on electric vehicles. For the time being, Grand Design and Lippert are safe from serious competition on quality and price.

@@LizAmazing Thank you, Liz. I was planning to purchase a motorhome and travel some for retirement. Life circumstance changed and that wasn’t possible. Plans now call for a mid-size towable. I have been appalled at the direction that the RV industry has taken, and Tiffin has been one of the biggest surprises! I like that Grand Design is starting to come around! If they do it right by taking care of their customers, and straighten out their quality and service issues, we consumers will beat down their doors to do business with them. We’re hungry for that kind of company. Lippert, are you paying attention? Liz, what you are doing is so important and the RV industry needs to know that MANY like me are watching and listening. No! No shout out to Grand Design for fixing their manufacturing defects and sloppy work after trying covering up it up. This is not all on Lippert either even though Patrick made it look that way 100%. They have their blame of course. Grand Design spec'd these frames out and anticipated some push back until people like Liz and myself expoed them and how much more massive this problem really is. Stop waving your pomp pomps for this corruption that effects so many people and especially when they are full-timers and displaced from their homes.
@borabora44803 ай бұрын
It seems that these rigs are simply under engineered on top of the poor training for techs in the field. The engineering concerns extend from the frame to all the parts so given Lipperts involvement, they seem to be the main culprit. the weight issue is real.the industry wants to market these toy haulers to dreamers to carry what these folks would like despite they can not actually perform to that level. this approach is not limited to the RV industry. Consider the EV industry and the promises that have been made. Buyers need to understand the reality versus what they would like it to be. Good on Grand Design for steppng up. I can only hope that this is truly not a one off repair but they follow through. Now I wonder if they will start using carriage bolts instead of lags on their new builds each time despite Lipperts suggestions. Will Grand Design continue to market these toy haulers without the warnings of the weight issue?
@davidbryan95773 ай бұрын
Yes Lippert must be part the blame if they tell the RC co how to fasten the structure and it fails.. I have been to plant 19 of Lippert and have seen a great number of frames as well as so many other things they supply to the manufacturer that are built into the design. and it all started there! and like the manufacturer, its build fast and get it out to be paid for.. right or not!
