It’s not always a trick. One time a guy called our car dealership from 3 hours away. Looking for a blue one with black interior and premium sound. We had two, told the guy come on down. In the time it took him to get there both of them sold. They’d been on the lot for 6 months, and that morning the stars aligned and three buyers showed up in as many hours. if you sign all the paperwork at the dealers and do not drive the motorhome or hook up the trailer to your vehicle and drive it off the lot you can change your mind. As long as you don't take delivery. I know this for a fact because my daughter and son-in-law went and signed all the paperwork for a class B camper van and they got buyers remorse and called the dealership up and said they changed their mind, the dealer said you couldn't do it, and it was yours and I kept telling them as long as you don't take delivery of it. You can change your mind, so the dealer finally gave up.

Salesmen lie all the time, but having other people interested is not out of the realm of possibility. I went to buy a car one time and when I got there another guy was out for a test drive and bought it. That said if they weren't 100% sure they shouldn't have put the deposit down. If they were then locking it up was the right move.

As soon as the unit wasn’t the one they had spoken to the salesman regarding I’d have walked. High pressure pitch, there are others interested in this unit so need a deposit now?? LOL. I had this happen. I said, thats ok i can find another one. I walked out. 😂. Less than 2 hours later the salesman called me and said the other party had backed out. The unit is available. I said no worries i found another one elsewhere. LOL!! I want to be the fly on the wall when the salesman meets with the manager. I ended up finding a class A, brand new leftover model for 1/2 price. I paid $69K for a $156K coach. It was perfect in every way. 5 yrs and never the slightest issue with anything. I did lots of custom work in it, I was meticulous. I sold the rig and 3 yrs later i’m still in contact with the new owners. They love it. RV shops do lousy work and they lie. They are talentless hacks. Their service people jump from dealer to dealer. If you’re not handy don’t buy one. Liz, thanks for sharing this unfortunate incident. The dealer was right in their advice, it appears they tried their darnedest to work with the customer. The transport company was liable and their insurance was on the hook. Am I correct the customer didn’t have a pull vehicle and this unit was being used as a “seasonal”? Thats what it sounded like from the customer’s response to take the unit back to the dealer or a local shop for further evaluation. 🤷🏻‍♂️. Perhaps I’m wrong.

First, I ran an RV Transport co. for over 20 years. So here's my take. You the buyer are a fool to pay 150K for an RV. There isn't one built that is worth that much money...Period. The dealership is not responsible. You signed the purchase paperwork so it's a done deal, and they are not responsible for the trailer once it leaves their lot. The Transport driver and his insurance company are 100 % responsible. You should have filed a civil suit against the driver and insurance company. They in turn would have totaled the rig for full amount end of story. AND, Most important... DO NOT BUY AN RV BUILT AFTER 2019...PERIOD !!!! Everything out there is OVER PRICED JUNK !!!

It appears Brinkley has the best build quality for 5th wheels, and they're 100-120K, so I don't know what is worth 150K. Not to mention 5th wheels have the highest depreciation of any RV, so just go find a decent used one. From reading stories it appears the bigger toy hauler models are too heavy for the frames, in other words it doesn't matter how much money you pay for something, the manufacturer may be cutting corners somewhere, they spec the frames too light to handle the weight. So caveat emptor. Agreed this lady should have sued the transport company, and got the RV repaired or replaced. From the description it might have been totaled.

I spent over a 10 years working with the safety department for one of the largest transport companies in the US. We have over 2500 trucks and 3500 drivers. This case is simple. The contracted carrier is responsible for the damage and their insurance will either repair or replace the unit. If they (the transport company) is refusing to do this contact the DOT at once and request their assistance with this preventable carrier accident.

We had a very similar incident happen to us. In Dec. 2023 we purchased a new Montana 3901 RK in CA. CA sales tax was 8.5%, we live in Minden NV sales tax is 7.1%. There was a substantial savings if we take possession of the trailer in NV. We purchased the trailer, "BUT" we had to pay a transport company to deliver the trailer to our town... we couldn't transport, we had to take possession in NV. The RV dealership knew of a person that transports, so the dealership arranged transport of the RV and we paid the transporter through the dealership. Long story short.... the day of delivery, the transporter dropped the trailer off his truck while on the highway. There was minor damage to the RV, but we, the dealership and the transporter went back and forth as to who was going to fix the RV.... transporter took complete responsibility ( he didn't completely latch the arm/ lock into position on the 5th wheel hitch). Turned out the transporter was under insured & no commercial license to haul.... he ended up being a complete liar with NO integrity. Again, to keep the story short..... the dealership stepped up, we took the RV back to them, they fixed "everything" to our satisfaction. It was a bad thing that happened but fortunately it turned out good and we thank the RV dealership for stepping up to take care of everything.

The whole system is flawed. From the start. There is no clear winner. The dealer absolved itself of any responsibility. The transport company should be on the hook for the damage. But the dealer just beats the transport companies up for the best price, and pays shit for hauling. And every chump with a truck wants to be a hauler so you get what you get. The consumer does not know they are automatically setup to get screwed, so they know no better. The haulers policy is minimal; at best so there is no winner. The whole thing is just a legal quagmire. NOBODY wants to be responsible for shit. This whole story is disgusting. Nobody will accept any responsibility for anything, and the purported "buyer" knows nothing like this should happen in real life.

Yes, hopefully she can find a lawyer to pursue the transport companies insurer, who should cover the repairs that can be proved to be caused by the wreck, if the policy they paid for covers that high an amount of damage claims, and it may not if the transport compamy cheaper out on coverage limits. Plus, the insurer will, of course, try every way possible to pay out for as few of the repairs as possible, and will offer only low-ball amounts for repairs to be made, as all insurance companies do nowadays. Plus, it seems like many of the repairs they now need are going to need to be covered by the RV manufacturers warranty, if any, as they are just poor build issues not caused by the wreck. So as the Tarrytown manager stated, they will have to somehow schedule any covered repairs of those items with one of their repairs sites by paying to tow the RV to a site themselves for those repairs, which will probably not ever be made as nice and up to quality as the couple would like. They will be stuck with stuck with a poorly built very overpriced rv, even if every repair gets made eventually, just like so many other unknowlegeable folks hoping to find a more affordable way to live. The RV manufacturers are truly taking advantage of uneducated new RVers, and selling shiny but very poorly built RVs for huge amounts of profit, and refusing to stand behind their products when things go wrong!! Buyers Beware!!!!

Why would the dealer be required to do anything? For that matter, why SHOULD they do anything? They only made arrangements with a transport company to tow the thing because the buyers either didn't want to or couldn't tow the thing home. Either way, once that thing is in someone else's hands, it's that someone else who is responsible for getting it safely to its destination. Try this on... You buy a brand new car from a new car dealership. Something happens and you have to have it towed back for repair. On the way back to the dealer, whatever securement method the driver used fails and the car leaves the truck violently, falls to the ground and gets damaged. Should the dealer be responsible for repairing the car just because that's where you bought it? Of course they shouldn't, and neither should the RV dealer. The trailer was in someone else's care, so that's who should be paying, and how much she paid for it doesn't have anything to do with it either. While we're at it... It isn't the dealer's "tow contact". It's someone in the area who happens to have the proper equipment and the willingness to move it from A to B. It's a specialized type of transport, one that most towing companies won't even touch and have zero interest in ever getting involved with, so there isn't exactly a huge pool to draw names from. I'm still in awe that these people have the gall to even think that there's any reason whatsoever that the dealer should do something for them. Why should they? Why should they suck down the thousands of dollars, or even a portion of it to fix this thing? It wasn't damaged when it left their lot, the truck doesn't belong to them and the driver doesn't work there either. The last time they saw it, it was in perfect and brand new condition. You go after the guy that towed it, not the person who sold it. They didn't sell her a damaged trailer. The driver of the truck delivered a damaged trailer, damage that is 100% his own fault.

We asked if it was on the lot yet, and they said no. Told them to call us when it arrives. All along this process we were dealing with an RV rep from the company. It hadn't even started to be built at that time when the dealership wanted the money. In november the rep said it was on the dealers lot, but the dealer claimed wasnt. lol We went to the lot and found it. The rep gave us the vin number so that how we found it. Now, having said that, that was 20 years ago and I'm not even sure they still own Terrytown. I agree with the folks who say it is the towing company's responsibility. My two thoughts are, #1, when I bought my RV that was over $100K, there was no way I was going to allow anyone but me to go pick it up and bring it home. I drove 7 hours to pick up my unit and spent the next three days bringing it home, safe and sound, in one piece. My 2nd thought is, when listening to this was that Terrytown could have made more of an effort to push the towing company to come to a reasonable solution.

Back in 1999 I ordered a car from a dealership. When the car arrived and came time to pick it up it has some paint that somehow came off the rear bumper. Not only did the dealer have someone come and paint it on the lot but they also took $2000 off the price i had agreed to. Since the car had not been registered I was under no obligation to accept it. My deposit was never an issue since they were going to make me an offer on another car. The paint repair was perfect and i was $2000 happier. I rolled the car off the lot with 4 miles on it. Now I am not a lawyer but my question here is this. Was the RV registered with her DMV that she lived in? Another thing. The person who transported it has to have insurance that covers things like that. I used to drive a semi for a private owner and he had to have a liability insurance coverage of $750,000. My trailer was 13'6 ". I always checked my routes to make sure there were no low clearances. In this case the delivery driver is liable since he knew the RV was to high to go under the overpass and should have never tried. To be perfectly honest her I didn't know that they made RV's over 13"6' including the AC units or the Satellite antenna. I still have friends that dive what's called "Heavy Haul" loads.. In order for them to be on the road with that load they need permits from every state they are going trough. The states are the ones who sets the beast routing for that truck. Some state also require an escort/Pilot car.. Some reasons are for being over height, over weight and overlength. The RV dealer should vet the companies they use for transport.

From what Stacey has said, the dealer hired the transport company. The transport company and their insurance company are the ones who should be 100% liable here. The only way the rv dealer might have a problem is if they hired a transport company without the proper insurance that would cover damage due to driver negligence. I would also like to know if the transport driver was cited for various charges like striking the bridge, leaving the scene of an accident. Liz said that Progressive was the insurance company for the transport company, Stacey may need to hire her own adjuster at this point. I am not how this works in the rv insurance world but did Stacey transfer coverage from her old unit to the new unit before it left the dealers lot?

Tarrytown's lawyers would have a field day in court. "Your honor, we offered free repairs under warranty, and they refuse to take it to us or even a local dealer." JUDGE: "Will the plaintiffs please explain who the expect it to get fixed then?" "well, your honor...uhhh...we thought we would get a KZbinr to try to publicly shame the dealer..who did nothing wrong actually...but that backfired on us." Judge: "Yeah...I'm going to go ahead and dismiss this case. And you are lucky I am not making you pay for the defendant's legal expenses. They should take the dealer to court and let the judge decide who is responsible for what. Many companies will put something in a contract that, by law, is not legally binding. I would argue also that the dealership is responsible, and their driver was negligent, for damaging their property while under their care. The dealership claiming they have no legal obligation for the damages is ludicrous. Let the judge or jury decide.

Sad story. When I bought our new trailer last summer I traveled six hours to buy it and pull it home myself. My story is a positive one and all went well. The dealer and camper are great. Biggest lesson learned here is either pull your camper yourself, or have an iron clad contract with the transport company.

Regarding the damaged RV, I think this is a case of the dealership "hiding" behind the law. Technically speaking, they can wash their hands of it and did. Aside from the truck driver actually abiding by the height limit marked on the bridge (I'm sure he didn't want to be bothered turning around and finding another route), the best solution here would have been the insurance company declaring the RV a total loss, which is what they should have done. That was a very solid hit on the roof. At the very least, the entire roof should have been replaced.

That is why you use your personal insurance company and hire a lawyer if it is not going will. The fact that the new owner did not want to report it to their insurance company probably explains why it is such a mess.

@@bindingcurve This is true, never thought of it that way. Same as your new vehicle has your own insurance on it before it even leaves the lot. I worked 20 years in the car rental business, including for Avis/Budget, and often brand new fleets were transported by casual drivers two hours from the dealers to our location...and I'm talking over 500 brand new units a year. If something happened, and occasionally we'd lose a windshield, our company's insurance replaced them. Edit; I remember one year we had a total loss with the driver somehow going off the road into a ditch. Brand new Chrysler 300, all the bells and whistles. Fully covered by insurance, although it was heartbreaking to think of the waste.

This situation with the wrecked RV only proved Terry Town RV are a questionable dealership that embraces shady practices like bait and switch. Yes, they are right the unit is legally hers, but she did not wreck it. They should have made themselves available instead of presenting road blocks and repaired the RV no question.

I question how you can repair a RV that rams into a concrete bridge. The expanding bodies are both complicated and flimsy. I doubt that there is more strength designed in than to barely hold up to normal use - road travel, wind resistance, and occupancy. The whole structure is likely deformed and should be totaled.

I appreciate Liz not just taking the buyers word on everything. A couple of questions I have is if they consulted with an attorney? Maybe they did and I missed that. All of the times I consulted with an attorney the initial visit was free or very cheap. $50 or $100. I get that they had already signed the paperwork, but that doesn't mean other laws and precedents don't apply. I know and have heard of numerous people that had new cars damaged and none of them were forced to accept the vehicle even though they had already bought it. Next I also wonder who hired the driver and what an attorney would have said about that. I think an attorney coming on the show and talking in general about common issues like warranty problems, etc. would make a great show.

RVs are not homes, normal consumer goods, or motor vehicles in most states. The chassis of a self powered motor home is usually excluded from lemon law due to GVW and/or the living area built on it. I believe the vans outfitted as rvs within the manufacturer's original walls are under protection in more ways. I worked at a new car dealer and we did service and warranty on the chassis and RV manufacturer would cover up/build over chassis components and GM warranty pay was for an openly accessible powertrain and we had terrible battles to get paid and car dealers only pay the mechanic if they get paid with few exceptions. I had one that rear wheels would not come off because rv body was too low and too close. I did not repair as rv manufacturer would not pay. This was 40+ years ago. Some manufacturers have been miserable scoundrels that long ago.

A friend of my family when I was growing up was a local cop. He got home late, with his family parking his RV in front of the house intending to clean it out and get it back inti storage after work the next day. He came home for lunch and found a guy sticking a hose into the side of the motor with a gas can ready to collect the fluid he siphoned out. The guy acted pretty cool considering he was committing a crime and a uniformed cop randomly walked up. The guy explained that his car had run out of gas and he needed to get some out of his RV. Of coarse the cop knew who the RV really belonged to and as that was him, the cop, he also knew the thief had made a terrible mistake. I'm not talking about trying to steal fuel out of a cop's RV.. The cop let the guy start the syphon hoping he would get a mouth full of the fluid in the tank. He did get a mouth full of that fluid, and he knew right away that it was not gasoline. Nor was it drinking water or soapy water. He'd stuck his hose into the flack water tank! The worst part of all was, he was also arrested for attempted fuel theft. He was lucky though. It could have been worse. The motor home was a diesel. His car used gas.
