Grand Funk Railroad performing Inside Looking Out @ Madison Square Garden on 12/23/72. The special Christmas show that was recorded for the 'In Concert' series. Yes, this is the real deal, the Grand Funk Railroad we all love with Mark Farner on lead vocals, guitar, & keyboard. This video captures some of the magic that was GFRxR. Grand Funk Railroad was truly a "Performace Vehicle". Click on the link below & sign the online petition to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame now! www.petitiononl...
Im sitting here lonely like a broken man.
I serve my time doin the best I can.
Walls and bars they surround me.
But, I dont want no sympathy.
No baby, no baby,
All I need is some tender lovin.
To keep me sane in this burning oven.
And, when my time is up, youll be my reefer.
Life gets worse on gods green earth.
Be my reefer, got to keep smokin that thing.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I said now baby ... baby ..., let me smoke it ... smoke it ...
Makes me feel good ... feel good, yes, I feel good ... ahhhhh ...
Yes, I feel alright ... feel alright ..., yes, I feel alright ... feel alright ...
Yes, I feel alright ... ahhhhh ...
Ohhhhh ...
Ice cold water is runnin through my veins.
They try and drag me back to work again.
Pain and blisters on my mind and hands.
I work all day making up burlap bags.
The oats theyre feeding me are driving me wild.
I feel unhappy like a new born child.
Now, when my time is up, you wait and see.
These walls and bars wont keep that stuff from me.
No, no, baby,
Wont keep that stuff from me.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I need you right now mama.
I need you right now baby.
Right by my side, honey.
All night long.
Make me feel alright ...
Yes, all ..., yes, all ..., yes, all ... alright.
You better come on up and get down with me.
Ill make you feel real good, just you wait and see.
Make me feel alright ..., yes, I feel alright ...
Yes, all ..., yes, all ..., yes, alright.

This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.

Saw these guys back in the day in a sleepy little southern town, and they still played like it was MSG. They gave it all every time they walked on stage. I was probably 13 or 14 at the time and needless to say it blew me away. No Autotune, no stupid pre-recorded backing tracks, just pure raw passion and rock 'n roll, the way it is supposed to be. You didn't just hear Mel's bass, you felt it shake every bone in your body. I feel sorry for today's kids.

1. Break The Beatles ticket sales record @ Shea '71 & set a record that has stood for 37 years. 2. Your first three albums went Gold in less than 90 days. Another first. 3. First band to have a "Live Album" go multi-platinum (1970). 4. Become the first band to sell ten consecutive Platinum albums. Another first. 5. Have the number one song in America & number one album, already certified Gold before album has been oficially released due to pre-sales orders (American Band). Another first.

Farner & co. giving a lesson on how a live performance is suppose to be. Is there a better front-man than Mark Farner? If there is, I haven't seen him. And I've seen enough to know. These early Grand Funk Railroad 2 plus hour shows set the standard & are legendary. Many people write me telling me they were at some of these shows & are still to this day in awe of of the energy, talent, & passion put into these performances. Just some of my thoughts as I watch this great performance again.

I've forgotten just how good this clip was. This entire Madison Square Garden concert was everything it was hiped-up to be & more. This is truly one of Rock's greatest concerts in my opinion. This is just great honest American Music, played loud, proud, & with great talent. One things for sure, no one ever left a GFRxR concert without a smile on their face. GFRxR was a performance vehicle for sure.

I can hardly imagine how you feel having missed the era I grew up in. The early 70s was a fantastic time. We had great fun going to concerts when Classic rock was forming and developing. Every weekend we made trips to concerts near and far. You are correct - there is nothing like what we experienced out there now. It is very interesting to me to find young people discovering our time of music and their opinions of it. We saw the great artists many of whom are still acive in their prime.

My buddy is the guy with the beard on the left with the Rolling Stones 'mouth' T-Shirt and I am on the right of him in the pale red T-Shirt dancing and clapping LOL. PackedFunk...thanks for all your postings. I'm a big GFR fan. I believe it was '70 or '71 when I saw them at S.F.'s Winterland. They were still a band of three. They toured with Bloodrock. What a "fantastic show!" I saw them two more times at the Oakland Coliseum after they added Craig Frost. I still think they were "at their best" in the reunion tour of '98. Have you ever heard of Bloodrock known for a tune titled "D.O.A.?" They are here on YT, too!

GFRxR were dogged about everything they did, the way they looked, their attitude, even some critics called their instruments "junk". They were told their songs would not be played on the radio if they were longer than 3 minutes. GFRxR were black-balled by "the establishment" through music critics. This is also why they are not in R&R HOF today. Help me right this wrong. Everyone sign the online petition in this video's description. Thanks everyone.

Yes the 70s were a unique and great time to grow up in. I was 19 in 1971 and there were concerts every weekend at a theater 10 minutes away from me. The tickest were priced at around $7 -$15 lol. Madison Square Garden had great bands play there and Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ also had concerts every weekend - good days...we got to see emerging bands play in small concerts halls before they became huge arena acts.

fattdaddy is right. The above fact boggles the mind. How can one band be so dominate? It sounds like a misprint, but it is NOT! There is no way anyone can say GFRXR was "not influincial enough", or say "they were just hype". Ten consecutive platinum albums to top off this popularity.
