Grand Funk Railroad - Into The Sun performed live @ Madison Square Garden 12/23/72. The special Christmas show that was recorded for the 'In Concert' series. Yes, this is the real deal, the Grand Funk Railroad we all love with Mark Farner on lead vocals, guitar, & keyboard. This video captures some of the magic that was GFRxR. Grand Funk Railroad was truly a "Performace Vehicle." Click on the link below to sign the online petition to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame now! www.petitiononl...
Rising, setting, been trying to get into the sun, yeah.
Wanting, getting, gonna get more, baby, when Im done.
All my life I had been waiting, then you turn me on.
Now therell be no hesitating, Im getting into the sun.
Growing, knowing, you learn more everyday, yeah.
Needing, succeeding, sun, dont go away.
Things are changing for the better, now Im not afraid.
Ill be writing you a letter, cause I just got paid.
Growing, knowing, you learn more everyday, yeah.
Needing, succeeding, sun, dont go away.
Things are changing for the better, now Im not afraid.
Ill be writing you a letter, cause I just got paid.

I was born in 1987. When I was about 5 years old, my mother used to put GFR music while cleaning the house. And me, I just was dancing and jumping! Now I'm 25 and there's no day without GFR. Listen to this my friends: This is TRUE HARD ROCK.

I saw GFR at Cabo Hall in Detroit in 1971. I was 16 and I went with my brother who was 23 at the time. It was my first concert ever! One of the most fantastic experiences of my life! And believe me folks, I knew I was looking at greatness on that stage! And they are! Got Funk?

Same story with me, 16 years old first concert in New Orleans. You're worlds. When is sublime touring backup band was Ballin Jack, a purple of black dudes when I saw grandfunk and mark Farner with a miracle tar? I knew I had to learn how to play guitar. I was never the name what a memory. They do not make him like that anymore

I'm a 40 year guitar veteran, won the NC battle of the band's when I was 16 playing this song, the energy coming off the stage during this performance is off the scale! Hope to meet Mark Farner on the road one day !

This is probably my favorite video. So much energy. I used to watch this "In Concert" series late night in the early to mid seventies. The FM radio station in the area would broadcast the sound in stereo. It was all good. Good times-good memories.

I've always loved this song. It is truely a power trio song. Mark's chord shreading, Don's tribal pounding, & Mel's crunching bass. No one were better live than GFRxR. PERIOD! They were a performance vehicle!

This has to be the most energy intense song ever performed live. All 4 of these guys were running "Wide Open". Nothing was left behind on this performance. Nothing was left behind on any GFRxR live performance, now that I think about it. That's the only way these guys knew how to perform. THROTTLE WIDE OPEN!

I was a huge GFR fan as a teen in the mid to late 70's. In March of 1992 I got to meet Mark Farner after a show he played at McCormicks club in Passadenna Texas. He autographed my concert ticket. Very nice guy! Huge thrill for me! Eddie VanHalen said in an interview, Grand Funk used to kick ass live. They were the only band he ever saw live, that lived up to his expectations. Enough said!

I was a 80s child, but GFR became my favorite, after my older brother turnned me on to them. I just don't know of any band, that can match the tireless energy, they performed with, in the coarse of there career. They were a true performance vehicle, that could rock the house down.

This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.

Grand Funk Railroad is what I consider the epitome of what Rock and Roll is supposed to be -- a three piece garage band that went on to be the most popular band in the world. They were simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us Funk Fans who remember, NOTHING CAN REPLACE IT!! That is rock and roll. The sad part is The Hall of Fame has no idea what I'm even saying.

I feel your pain gfrkiss. That's how I got to know Mark Farner back in '89 was going to his shows. Farner ALWAYS HAS TIME FOR HIS FANS! I don't care if it's 3:30AM with a 600 mile drive to play the next night, he still has time to talk & if he ever meets you, he will remember you. The man is a Rock Icon for good reason. He is a GOOD PERSON. God Bless Funk!

Mark Farner & GFRxR were a performance vehicle. They were geared for live performances. With almost no airplay in the early days, this is what made them famous. They set the standard at which other bands are judged today.

When I bought Mark Don & Mel and saw them live at 15, my world turned upside down. Much better singers, guitar players and song writers are out there, but somehow, when GFR got up on stage, they became more than the sum of their parts. Such was their energy and animal magnetism. My little hippy girlfriend would just about orgasm over "Inside Looking Out".

One of Michigan's A list bands! The mix of soul/motown influences and raw loud garage rock was pure magic. The West Amps they used had their own sound, bassist use of overdrive were all the right things at the right time. Don has to be one of the most spot on drummers ever. I especially love the three piece portion of their careers, and damn they could sing too!
