I leave Marquette after a zero (resupply/rest) day and keep heading east. I make it first to Au Train Bay and then around the cliffy Grand Island setting myself for a jump into Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Yeah when I switched from UL backpacking to kayaking I was amazed at how much stuff I could bring. I was used to counting every ounce and now its like glamping. Some great scenery this week.

It is quite the feeling to land after a long day and have a nice dinner with some fresh greens or avocados and then relax with a cool glass of wine or beer. I have some UL hiking and bike packing aspirations and it will be tough for me to get out of the kayak comfort mindset.

Nah, it wasn't that cold. It was comfortable to swim in for short bursts. But there were some days where the weather pushed the warm water out and cold water in. This summer though (from what I have heard) the water is much colder in general than last summer when this was filmed.

Yup, this year our average high temperature seems to have been in the low 70's so the lake hasn't warmed up like other years. Also spring was lateish. My first paddling day was April 15th. Last year was warm and spring was early. I got out in early March.

It's cool seeing these places I paddle often from a different point of view. I have yet to paddle the stretch from Big Bay to my house though (I've paddled bits but missed most of it so far). We paddled around Grand Island the other day and saw the Riptide Ride 4 times. It gets kind of annoying. Mostly noise and the waves are too small to be fun. I noticed you suiting up with the tow belt, have you had to use it much paddling solo?

The riptide got way too close too many times. And at a stop at a camp site on the thumb they flooded a fishing boat that was anchored in the cove because they buzzed the cove at speed. For the tow belt, not used many times on the water but I've used it way more on rivers for lining around obstacles. But I mainly use it for tying up my kayak at night.

It's a Falcon Sail. I really like it. It adds another dimension of fun and challenge to long days on the water.
