Bill Hickman was a legend. The Seven Ups was one of the best chase scenes ever, IMO. I still remember seeing it in a theater in 1973. He was following James Dean when Dean was killed. They were close friends

The Seven-Ups chase scene is my favorite actually......it is gripping & yes, the realism & the grittiness adds to it.

Bill Hickman did the driving stunts in four of the films mentioned. BULLITT, THE FRENCH CONNECTION, THE SEVEN-UPS and TO PLEASE A LADY.

Great commentary here. I still think Bullitt, the French Connection, and the Seven-Ups stay in my mind as the top car chases. Bullitt because it did seem to begin a standard; you can watch it today and still get into it. The French Connection chase is actually very compelling when you watch it from the beginning. Gene Hackman's character is shot at and there is a foot chase before he jumps into a car to pursue the shooter on the train. The shooter goes through his own drama on the train, trying to avoid the authorities, etc. By the time the chase is over, you see why Gene Hackman's character is exhausted because you are as well. The Seven-Ups is a longer chase scene that is in many ways even better and the ending is stark and sudden. All are good cop movies; the French Connection's plot being the better of the three.

Seven Ups chase starts on west 56th St. goes up the West Side to the GW Bridge then north on Palisades Pkwy. then with one cut they're on Taconic Pkwy. in northern Westchester (no busses allowed) and ends near Briarcliff Manor.

yeah man,,,despite the infringe on the taconic pkwy(beautiful drive) what a great chase scene---when he winds up under the 18 wheeler - whoa awesome!

It is said that the ending of the seven ups chase is paying homage to Jayne Mansfield's death.

The guys at the table were discussing the different "Racing Movies" that covered the 1950's, 60's, and later. They mentioned Elvis Pressley's film, "Spin Out" which, while it wasn't really much of a cinematic master piece, I picked up a bit of trivia in another video about Max Balchowsky and his "Old Yellar" race car. Max just happened to be Elvis's driving instructor in that film, and while he never really commented (at least publicly) regarding the quality of the film, he did say that Elvis was actually a pretty good driver. That surprised me.

The 7Ups chase went across the George Washington Bridge, then up the Palisades Parkway, not the Jersey Turnpike ( well in real life that’s what would happen). Thanks to Hollywood, the chase wound up in the east side of the Hudson River in Westchester County NY.

As far as chase scenes go, the Road Warrior has some of the best chases and crashes. Of course that was made in Australia, but noteworthy because of the chase scenes.

Cheeky yanks , complaining that older British cars wouldn't start and leaked oil . They weren't perfect but contemporary American cars were pretty bad and would panic if you pointed them at a bend in the road . And we don't mind so much if one of our cars gets killed in a film , so long as it has a heroic exit .

Of course Bullit wasn't the first, but the movie elevated to a higher level what had been done until then. And no, I do not at all agree I love the movie solely because the car chase. 1) the car chase would never have reached its status without the phe-no-me-nally good soundtrack 2) the rest of the police enquiry is fast moving and very well 3) we get to see San Francisco before it went downhill but still overprized 4) I don't mind at all McQueen not talking a lot in this movie, it fits his character, who is more result driven than talkative, which he leaves for the politicians and their henchmen 5) what McQueen lacked in dialogues in this movie was more than compensated by the auro of the Mr. Cool he portrayed here etc etc . Yes, Jacqueline Bisset too was added value in that regard. These guys in this show don't seem to really grasp how good this movie is, the guy leading the show seems to be made of rubber.

Why do people keep trying too criticize buillit the move was good the action was good Steve McQueen was good the car chase has never been bettered for Realism Peter Yates the director did a commentary too the movie along with Steve McQueen over shooting the left turn and doing the smoking reverse the great stunt driver bill Hickman according too the director lost control in the four wheel drift hit a parked car and smashed the camera also when there out on the highway and Hickman goes between the truck and the guard rail the director instructed him too just lightly bump the truck but Hickman took the bumper off it’s a great shot because McQueen drafts him in the mustang and sling shots out into the next lane I loved mr hickmans driving skills long live the greats off hollywood
