That is right.Niko will not break principle to trust people who close to him.He know Dimitri will continue to push harder to get him killed several times.Although that choice lead to Kate's death but it is only way to bring end this unhappy and terrible result.

Firing three shots at Dimitri represents 3 evil things he has done: Betraying Niko Burned Niko and Roman's apartment/Roman's depot Kidnapping Roman

This is why I picked revenge mission in the game because you get to kill Dimitri Rascalov to prevent Roman Bellic getting killed.

Glad you choose revenge because Dimitri is nothing but a backstabbing sociopath that tried to kill Niko and Roman twice. I wouldn’t do a deal with someone that betrays me more than once. I couldn’t believe Roman would allow Niko to do the deal with Dimitri and become Jimmy Pegorino puppet. Dimitri has been screwing them from the start and try to get Roman killed. It’s typical of Roman for niko to get more money from crooks especially from Dimitri and it’s the most selfish and cowardly act. Revenge is the best choice to make.

Both Revenge and Deal Endings are canon, though. The fates of Roman and Kate are up to the player (And don't give me the "But in GTA V, Roman has a LifeInvader (Which is in early 2009, so Revenge is canon." Either that or it's just an oversight).
