I ran across ALL those Durand RR track everyday for many years going back and forth to SCHOOL. When the steamers were retired they parked a slew of the engines at a crossing behind our grade school. and played on the old engine after school. And yes sadly there was also an accident of a classmate that fell under a moving train and lost one leg and part of the other. Safety was not what it is today and everyone in Durand ran across tracks somewhere in their travels if you walked anywhere in town. And of course we always WAITED to trains to pass every day in sitting in a car waiting. But my Grandfather and Under worked on Grand Trunk RR!! Grandma would use her "pass" to take us every year from Durand to Lansing and back on a Train! Good memories. (except of course for the accident)

My father worked at GT for over 30yrs. We only see a few engines every now and then.

I remember GTW in the Detroit yards having black engines around the 60s yet never see any videos of them on ytube. That ran out of milw jct where the round house was. It wasn't much of a round house just engine fuel ups and turn around. Any videos out there? also remember a wreck north of Detroit where two engines come together, caused a hell of a mess,. a few lost there life's. Be safe out there.

I grew up in Charlotte I remember when there was 2 tracks through town! Why did they take the one track out?

Hunter Harrison did. He wanted to single track the line like he did the IC mainline. But they also claimed that the curve at Lawrence Ave was very tight with both tracks. They took one track out and put the one left, down the middle of the roadbed. Hunter Harrison is dead today. I think CSX management had him murdered. He messed up at CN and CP. He was currently raping CSX to death. He just conveniently passed away.

this was prob before the tunnel bore enlarging at Port Huron...? My best guess.

Before 1994, the CN train called the Laser had to run through the old tunnel in Port Huron. Back then CN and GTW had two yards in Port Huron and Sarnia. One on each side of the Tunnel so they could switch out all the cars too tall to fit into the tunnel. They would ferry the High Cubes and auto racks across the river, then reassemble the train on the other side which would take hours. CN would just run right through with the low profile train.
