Marc, I can see why this is one of your all time favorite boondocking locations. Mountain panoramas in every direction... beautiful! Rain can be a relief from beautiful weather. Makes sunny weather that much nicer.😊 Montana remains one of the premier states to visit. Looking forward to next week's episode. Nice new drone. 45 minutes of flying time is incredible! Gord
@GrandAdventure Жыл бұрын
Thanks Gord! Those 360-degree views are hard to beat. True about the weather, too. The cameras on the Air 3 were what sold me. I seldom use even 20 minutes of flight time anyway - I'm up, I get my shots, I get down. But the 3x telephoto camera allows me to pull a broader depth of field together in certain circumstances, like the shots here that pulled the lake in behind the campers, rather than having it look more distant on the horizon than it actually is. Meanwhile, the regular wide-angle camera allows me to get more traditional shots.

I've done that in the past, Don, and it is indeed terrifying. In this instance I both took off and landed from the beach, and got into the kayak in between. Much easier, and with 40-something minutes of flight time per battery that's a practical way to do it.

I still have the original Mavic, plus the Mini 2 that I purchased a couple of years ago. However, this Air 3 changes everything. The ability to pull in distant features with the 3x telephoto camera, while still retaining the normal wide angle camera, provides so many more possibilities.

Congrats on adding another drone to your toolbelt. After 10+ years of flying drones I am in middle of "refreshing" my own collection. I am keeping DJI FPV and DJI Avata drones. I am also keeping my DJI Air 2S (just ordered one of those fancy remotes too) but I am selling my skydio 2 and will be purchasing DJI MIni 4 Pro. You are going to get a chuckle out of this. I purchased skydio 2 as a follow me drone to follow my kayak. To this day I have not once used it while kayaking. So many people sunk theirs while trying to do that... which enlightened me to only use it when off roading. Skydio decided to discontinue selling to public so I am migrating to mini 4 pro and between air 2s and mini 4 pro I think I can tuck them away somewhere in my kayaks and get those fancy shots.
@GrandAdventure Жыл бұрын
I get nervous as hell flying from the kayak. Last time I tried it was while we were at Georgetown Lake in Montana this summer, and I gave up and just went to shore to pilot the thing. We started with the first-gen DJI Mavic Pro. A couple of years ago I added the Mini 2 and have been flying mostly that until getting the Air 3. Now that the Air 3 firmware has been updated to support FPV goggles, I splurged and ordered the DJI Integra goggles and flight controller. They get delivered tomorrow, and I'm really looking forward to trying that immersive experience.

Wow, some of those drone shots are amazing! Let me know what you want for the old drone…You find some amazing camping spots (why I first followed your channel). Definitely going to camp on that ridge! Also, I’m pretty sure I know who was pulling the fleece hoodie over her face in the group shot…. Surely the statute of limitations have run out by now ;-)
@GrandAdventure Жыл бұрын
😆Yep, you know who that was. You don't want that old drone, Darren -- one of the reasons that I bought the Air 3 (to accompany my Mini 2) is that the original Mavic Pro I own will soon be non-compliant with the FAA's Remote ID requirement as of 9/16/2023.

@GrandAdventure Жыл бұрын
You'll need some pretty serious ground clearance to leave the asphalt, Gerald, as there's a fairly deep ditch there. Downsizing Makes Cents took it at a poor angle and actually bent their frame a bit in the process. We normally put coordinates in the video description. However, Ed threatened me with physical violence if I did so this time. 😄 However, spend a few minutes with a topographic map and sattelite imagery, and it's not terribly difficult to figure out.

@GrandAdventure Жыл бұрын
@@tommaue4942 Thank you again. But that's what makes it easy. Because the Forest Service land is so limited, you won't have many places to look. Here's a federal government website that will show you the precise location of land use boundaries: maps.usgs.gov/padus/

@GrandAdventure Жыл бұрын
Yeah, we did that on purpose. While we typically share precise coordinates, I was sworn to secrecy on this one and reluctantly agreed to it. However, if you grab public land use maps, overlay them over topographic maps and look at the area surrounding the lake, it's not terribly difficult to figure out.

Hi Mark. Love your informative videos. The Three Forks Kayak day was a good one too. Question: we took our Lance trailer to Phillipsburg Bay Campground at Georgetown Lake (NF Campground) in August and could not find a place to fill our fresh water tank. I had to lug it over from the well at the campground. I started looking for a potable water spicket for our next trip to Georgetown Lake because we liked it so much and I could not find one. Where did you fill your tank? There has to be a place nearby. Thanks for any leads.
@GrandAdventure Жыл бұрын
Thank you Blake! We filled up in Missoula before we got there, however the Spring Hill NFS campground just east of the lake has a traditional faucet/spigot that allows you to fill without the hassle of the hand pumped wells at the campgrounds along the lake itself..
