There's some limits to that kind of thing, I think. At least in not-rural housing. Don't want say an unsafe gas powered thing in someone's backyard just waiting to explode. But I'm going with an extreme example, even then I'm not sure how often people are investigated for that, as a few houses have blown up lately. The only thing this could theoretically be an issue with is personal safety, which is personal so... weird, and maybe noise complaints, but it doesn't look like there's anyone nearby enough to hear it anyways. Well hopefully he can find some solution that that pesky township can't complain about. Maybe someone else with land zoned for it can take it and let it continue to be used, safely.

In America we do Not own the dirt that our house sits on. We rent it every year. It's called property taxes. Same is true for our vehicles including our automobile. We own the vehicle ( if it's paid off) but we have to pay fees ( license plates) every year to have the privilege to drive our automobile on the roads 'owned' by the counties, cities and states. Anything that we pay taxes on, or fees or rent to, we don't own.

This is why when people brag about buying a house instead of being a renter, they don’t realize that they really don’t own the house or the land it sits on. This guy’s unfortunate experience is a prime example of that. If the government wants your land or wants to control it in a matter you don’t see fit, they will. They’ll raise your property taxes, they’ll cite you for violations on your property, etc. There’s nothing you can do about it. And keep in mind that the first 30 years that you “own” your house, you really don’t own it - the bank does.

I've been dealing with code enforcement for over two years now, you wouldn't believe the hassle just to replace my front porch, the permit was cheap, they don't accept cash or credit cards only money orders and checks, I reminded them what year it was, the permit was 79 dollars which is and isn't the weird part, they wanted two checks, one for 75 dollars and one for 4 dollars, why? My house is over 100 years old and it was rotted, they wanted a survey which thankfully I found it was the one from 1955 when my parents bought the house, that saved me 700, then an architect plan my brother-in-law is a draftsman so that saved my at least 5,000 bucks they wanted a cost estimate of materials, I started with the framing when I was finished it had to be inspected, it passed and all last summer I rebuilt the porch, I'm no contractor just a DIYer, the only thing left to do is get a final inspection but winter came the holidays etc so I'll see what happens, I was even threatened with a 2000 dollar fine for not getting a permit when I started demolition.

People don't understand the concept of zoning laws. So if this guy can do "whatever he wants" with his land a company can come in and buy any land and do whatever they want with it. Laws like this are to deter a scenario like this from happening. Granted most companies will just lobby to have the laws changed in their favor but the point still stands.
