Talking Tapes

Just as vinyl records have a pattern of grooves and ridges that contain the sound, talking tapes - which were originally developed in 1918 - work on the same principle. Along the length of the tape is a fine pattern of grooves, and when you run your finger nail along the tape, you can 'play' the encoded message.

Vinyl came back and has been as solidly back as it's gonna get, since around 2000. :-P For a lot of major artists, production of vinyl never stopped. The quality has gotten a lot better since the 90s radical dip in demand though. :-) This is cool stuff. Now I wanna buy some congratulatory balloons, for no reason. I'm subscribing. :-)

I'm afraid to say it Tim, but that gramophone is an indian-made "Crap-o-phone", as obvious by the reddish finish, the obvious joining of two pieces to make the bend just before the opening of the horn, and the recycled use of components such as clockwork motors and reproducers. They often bare the famous "HMV" logo. These are being dishonestly sold on ebay and other such places, sometimes for inflated prices, and they have a very awful sound quality compared to an original HMV, and are potentially damaging to many old 78rpm records.

I had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figure that came with some of these tapes, with some Turtle-appropriate catchphrases baked-in. There was even a slot on the figure, with a little plastic "tooth" on one end, that would play the thing for you, instead of you having to use your fingernail.

I remember having teenage mutant ninja turtle figures about 25 years ago that operated on the same principle. They had a "speaker" mounted on their back and you pulled the tape through a slot in it. The only one I remember said "Let's kick some shell!"

I remember these on one old set of Ninja turtles that came out in the 90's where you put them through their shells and the shell would be the part that scratched the tape and amplified the sound.
