Big Mom is terrifying, but really pathetic in a way. Her inherited dream comes from a person who was trafficking her to the Navy. What's even sadder is that she misinterpreted that dream. She doesn't understand what seeing eye to eye means and takes it literally--modifying people so that they can be on eye level with her. She doesn't understand that having a kingdom with all the races is supposed to mean that everyone is welcome, not that she needs to collect different races like Pokemon by battling and conquering them. She also ostracizes people for their differences a la Pudding, instead of celebrating differences like in the orphanage. She is relentlessly pursuing a dream she doesn't even understand.

I’d say tragic more than pathetic personally. Her childhood was more or less defined by everyone who could have been a positive role model for her not being able to keep up with her compulsions and size. Carmel and streusen were the closest thing she had and both just twisted her further. It’s clear that during her time with Rocks at least she was able to achieve some level of normalcy but after that ran its course she just reverted back to her old ways, becoming more and more like her childhood self as she let her compulsions define her once again. What’s great though is you can tell big mom is more than just the things she chosen to define herself by. She has moments of being smart and clever, she’s able to be an emperor of the sea just by natural ability, her dream, while twisted into a vile shape, still comes from a place of purity. Big mom is someone who failed to achieve true greatness because the only people who didn’t give up on her were monsters.

I still love that Whole Cake ended with Sanji saving the day by cooking. He's a beast in combat, one of the physically most powerful members of the Straw Hat crew, but at his core he's a chef.

I always love it when Sanji gets an excuse to cook as part of the main conflict. Whether it's inspiring loyalty from the crew of a diluted megalomania, placating an unstoppable force of nature, or undressing a ramen man from his noodly armor

Yeah, I think almost every Strawhat has had an arc where their core wasnt their combat ability. We had Sanji win through cooking skills twice, but he's also one of the best detectives on the crew (Robin, Brook and Sanji are an amazing investigative trio). Chopper has won the arc through his doctor skills, thrice (Punk Hazard and Wano twice vs Queen). Nami has been the MVP at least once through her catburglar skills (altho, I do think the last time that happened was during Enies Lobby, sadly). Franky and Usopp have their engineering and inventive natures win quite a few times, Usopp's (imo) best performance being against Perona on Thriller Bark. I think the only 2 people who have not really have had a win condition outside fighting are Luffy and Zoro

I swear Oda lost control during Wano. In hindsight I wish he'd taken a break before Wano started like he did with Egghead. Unfortunately, he didn't and a lot of characters suffered for it, including Big Mom. Who still has one of my favorite backstories lol.

Big mom's back story hits so much differently when you're a father. I've raised two children and one thing I and many other parents have done could've easily set Lin Lin on a different path. That simple thing is to tell her what she did during her hunger fits. She legit cannot remember a thing after it happens and each time it happens, no one tells her "my dear lin lin, you did this" either because they are afraid to or it would mean she couldn't be used as a weapon. But having children and knowing other parents, telling kids when they did something wrong and explaining why is how they begin to learn responsibility and sympathy. When 5 year old big mom killed the giant elder, Caramel should have told her she had done it because Lin Lin truly felt terrible about his death. Even simply explaining what she did to the bear, explaining her strength and how she needs to control it would've changed Lin Lin drastically. But she had two birth parents too afraid of her to say anything, and two parental figures who just wanted to use her for her power, so telling her could've prevented that. I feel Oda having Lin Lin lose her memory of Big Mom was meant to show us one thing, that had anyone taught her sympathy, she wouldn't have hungry fits. When she was O-lin, she went much longer without food than she ever had before and besides making jokes at chopper's expense, she never went on a full on hunger fit. Even at the jail she doesn't get the red eyes or vacant stare, she doesn't have that one track mind for food. She can still speak and act full on her own volition. Maybe showing us that simply lacking sympathy is a big cause of the fits in the first place, that had she been raised better, the fits wouldn't exist at all.

I think another important thing about her being on Wano was her interactions with Kaido. It revealed what their relationship was like before splitting up and a glimpse of the rocks pirates. When she was defeated Kaido, despite claiming to hate her, was distraught and it's even subtly implied she mentored him as an upstart. Basically it showed us the in-between of child Charlotte and old lady emperor Charlotte, showing a more nuanced take on her character. Wano was reminding us that Big Mom was and still is an ambitious pirate trying to conquer the seas.

I think they would be really effective, probably the most powerful admirals besides akainu and i mean they share the common trait of an admiral to be quite destructive on every battlefield theyre summoned to. I mean the least destructive one is probably greenbull and he "destroyed" all the wasteland kaido created. The true realization she would have been a good person without pirate and navy influences was when she got to the prison in Wano she didnt have a tantrum for herself because there was no red bean soup. She went on that tantrum because she wanted to give that soup back to the people that helped her and gave her all they had. Another moment when she is told the village was destroyed and she was genuinely hurt. 60+ years of being a pirate isnt going to be overwritten by a few days of clarity but shes not a bad person at heart.

Honestly in my opinion big mom is the best villain in all of one piece. She’s incredibly good as an antagonist on the surface and her character is surprisingly deep as well. Big mom is such a great “bad timeline” version of herself, her looping back around to be like a young child in her advanced age while still retaining the terrifying intellect and experience of a Yonko. She’s a threat on several axis’s.

I think Big Mom is the villain that urks me the most in this series. Not the worst, not the best villain, but the one that brings me genuine disgust the most. The cannibalism and her grotesque form withstanding, it's because that mentality you mentioned in the video, that she wants to have people not care about them, is very real. I have met several people in my life that act to varying degrees of that, in fact Big Mom almost feels like a caricature of that kind of behavior. They are what I would without a moment's hesitation call the worst kind of human being. Those who desire to own and nothing more. Disrespecting people, animals, and even things around them. And just like Big Mom they always feel more untouchable than they actually are, making your only option against this unchanging monster to flee.

I really love big mom as a character, I think that she's genuinely the one emperor who would be the most like Luffy, and I think the amnesia plot on wano was pretty genius to see how a character like her would be without darker influences. I'm even holding a vague theory where, in the current cover story, we may see her and Kaido again, and both of them are gonna have amnesia and become farmers or something of the sort, Kaido maybe overcoming some of that depression and gaining some Joyboy aspects, and Big Mom coming back as O-lin as a Kind person who picks on fights because people gave her food the same way luffy does

agreed her defeat was unsatisfying and unmeaningful. Besides Kid and Law doesn't have much beef with her aside from them stalling her so she couldn't go back to rooftop. At least for Luffy since he's warrior of liberation and Kaido's like king of oppresion and slavery, it made sense he defeat him. For BM she's a glutton, greedy, and child like character then she gets defeated by a someone who wants to know the name of D and someone who likes fame and power. It feels like she was defeated by these random two emo kids and there's no surrounding narrative around it as what fight in One Piece usually do have.

BigMoms presence on Wano showed a few valuable thing: emperors are NOT about individual powers, its influence. Powerscalers hates this. Wano would have been much different if Oda wouldn't forget about the flagship and the rest of the crew. We had so much high caliber characters on that ship, its near pathetic that only Perospero managed to climb the waterfall. The whole family should have leave the ship and climb up to join the fight. It should have been a similar moment when Shanks joined marineford, but in a more sinister way. We got some information nuggets of not her childhood past, but her past with Rocks pirates. Yet this is a Kaido problem too, because even Kaidos past is unfolded. We all hope we get more details when Rocks D Xebec background will be revealed. So we fought 2 emperors, yet their lives true ambitions are still vague. Yeah... Kaido was a warmonger experiment from birth, BigMom was a powerhouse with immoral guidance yet we have no idea what they truly did most of their lifetime. Then we get a really valuable information about BigMom: similar to Luffy she values connections. She became a wild card just to protect Otama just because they bonded. And biggest problem with Wano, it was just too much for even Oda. The Charlotte family left behind, Morias flashback involved Doflamingos lingering presence Yamato?! She feels like a filler character too. Her only positive point that at least Oda did not made her into a damsel in distress character. Yet would be good to know who her mother was...?

I'd like to add that Big Mom has been extremely relevant in the story even before she was officially mentioned via Lola back in Thriller Bark. I also believe that Big Mom or at least crew members have appeared in every arc since Fishman island, even recently in Egghead with Smoothie and Mon't Dor being see in a recent chapter. I personally don't like the idea of Big Mom returning after Wano but it may be a possibility. BTW this antagonist series has been awesome. Can't wait for the next one....oh and question...technically both Robin and Franky were both villain's in the story. Will you do a video for each, even though they joined the crew?

If you need themes for Big Mom vs Kid and Law, it was generational clash, worst generation vs roger generation, which does work with Wano’s greater timey wimey themes. And was what most of her dialogue towards Kid and Law and Luffy.

yeah but there's no narrative around it like how the fight in OP usually do. Their fight doesn't have much substance aside from them stalling her so she couldn't go back up to the roof. I disagree that the amnesia bit had no reverberations, remember, she was technically defeated while actively breaking the alliance with Kaido because she felt for the folks who had taken her in while she was blanked out. It kinda ironically showed that she was cut from the same cloth as Luffy and Zoro, because what thing pissed them all off so much they dropped all nicety and immediately started attacking beast pirates? Finding out they had been wasting food while others starved.

Big Mom remains one of my favorite One Piece antagonists, and I think your video did a great job summing up the experience we had with her. I do think that she tends to get underestimated as an Emperor, as seen in the poll you had a while back regarding which Emperors would be victorious over which, and no one voted her to win a single fight.

I don't know if filler enemies were considered for this series, but let's take a look at Foxy next. Foxy gets a LOT of crap from the fandom because of the Davie back games, people saying he went against the rules and cheated when in fact, he says plainly at the beginning that Captains are allowed to cheat and intervene how they feel is necessary. The only time he outright cheated is in the ball game with his three members against Zoro and Sanji, where the said weapons are not allowed then the ref looks away when Foxy's team uses them. Every other time he cheats, it's well within the rules of Davie Back Fights. So yeah, as a joke video for a joke of a villain, Foxy should be covered.

Loved Big Mom despite the Wedding Cake bit dragging; and i found the crew desperately holding her off as a force of Nature rather than an antagonist not a dig against her power at all. She was the T-Rex from Jurassic Park, not a foe to be defeated. Her ultimate lava bath was disappointing to me for the same reason; I was hoping to see some change from the amnesia. The most we got was her being concerned for Tama that one tiem when she spotted her during the battle and defending her. A small glimpse of the cool sort of possibility there.

And to turn it up a notch...Flapjack and knuckles ride in a whale, whale's being a big deal in OP. So I went back to chapter 432 to see if Big Moms name is ever mention and I'm surprised it's not cause I know in that episode in the English Dub he does mention Big Mom and Kaidos name. Great video for where the story is, but I suspect it’ll need a version 2 in a few years. I still believe Big Mom will return for Elbaf. She’s essentially the throughout villain of the entire post-time skip. * Fishman Island: Introduced and is the first Emperor that Luffy took territory from and challenged in a true sense. * Punk Hazzard: The gigantificaiton experiments. * Dresrosa: She stormed in, took Sanji, and skedaddled. * Zou: We learn what she did with Sanji and sets up WCI. * Whole Cake Island: Self-explanatory. * Wano: She storms in, probably other as satisfactory as many would like, but ends stating she is not dying there. * Egghead: In Kuma’s flashback she helped nudge Kuma into eating his fruit. We also get some scenes dedicated to Pudding and Big Mom’s family wondering what happened to her. Speculation bit, compare Big Mom’s odd body and origins to Bonnie’s mom being let go by Saturn. An arc introducing Buccaneers being a thing and being unusually strong. Then we are heading to Elbaf. A place linked, at least retroactively, to Big Mom’s character and motivations since Thriller Bark. Where things stand, I think her character arc as the post time skip villain will either end at Elbaf or it will continue to the near end of the story if evolves to her representing the handing of the torch from the old generation to the new one. Unlike Whitebeard and Roger dropping the torch when they died, she’ll willingly pass it on while living to someone. Knowing Oda, probably Buggy.

As for whether Oda ever had a plan for Kid, I've heard a theory that makes sense to me. It's a theory that suggests that Oda originally had something different planned for Law, and Kid was intended to have a slightly modified version of Law's backstory, but he made changes once he saw Law's popularity. There's a few reasons I believe this theory has some merit. One is that Kid's power should be just as capable of curing White Lead poisoning as Law's fruit is since the magnetism can draw the metallic lead out of his body. Another is the way Lid was originally set up to be seen as either a threat or genuine rival for Luffy because of his higher bounty. The third is that I can easily imagine the young version of Law we see in the flashback turning out to be more like Kid than Law turned out. By which I mean it would make sense if he was still very angry, violent, and the kind of person who would not care about collateral damage at all.

Completely agree with Big Mom's foreshadowing. The second her ship appeared in Dressrosa, towering above the already pretty massive Sunny, I feared for the lives of the Straw Hats that had to skeddadle to Zou. They were already dealing against some ridiculous odds, with Doflamingo's family, and having Big Mom's crew vibe check them really stoked the fires of curiosity to see her in full capacity. Also, about her not changing after her amnesia wore off in Wano, I'd have to disagree. Yes, she reverted back to her evil self, but it wasn't like she forgot what she saw while amnesiac. All leading up to the true monster of the raid, O-Tama, appealing to her humanity and pointing her to a member of the bastards that denied her food, which ended in poor Ulti getting blasted to kingdom come.

I think Big Mom could have definitely benefited from a plot twist where Blackbeard got involved and defeated her following the events of Whole Cake Island. It would help continue the parallels between Luffy and Blackbeard, further Blackbeard’s thematic use of swooping in to plunder at the end of major conflicts, and become a central off screen event; in opposition to the cliff notes detailing Kuzan and Auger’s trip there. 20:55

Also, you said something crucial, which is that all the other Yonko are treated with the respect they deserve. Big mom doesn’t get that treatment, and seems to, a lot of time, be handled to the benefit of the straw hats. Some may say that it’s more so that the straw hats are strong/crafty enough to handle her, but I feel like we hadn’t seen enough from them by the time we got to Whole Cake to feel confident in that idea.

“Imagine what would happen if this happened to another emperor like Kaido shanks or whitebeard.” Something like this happens to all over the other emperors, with the only exception being buggy. Kaido is used to show that even the strongest creature cannot overcome gear five, and to explain the importance of haki. At marineford, whitebeard handles the heavy lifting so oda can tell a personal story with ace and luffy. And shanks is basically just a tool for oda whenever he needs to forshadow or resolve something.

I think after Whole Cake Island her character was attempted to develop through her golden era with Rocks and her buddy relationship with Kaido, the while she has the personal dream of having a nation with all races, her Pirate King/Queen dream became a priority. But again who knows if there's anything left of her to explore other than God Valley.
