I am a senior and love seasonal decor. My attitude has shifted to realize less is more. You can still get the look/feel of that particular holiday with a minimal amount of things. It has been a positive exercise the last several years to pass on (or throw away) much of my decor. My house looks lighter yet I have enough seasonal decor to make me happy.

The older I get, facing health and mobility issues, the more I face my mortality. Better to declutter and less to manage is my motto while I can still get around. I truly faced this experience when my husband's parents passed away within 3 months of each other. They had lived through the Great Depression and WWII, so much stuff to deal with. Don't want to do that to my descendants.

You know, the older we get, the more precious memories and joys become. If Grandma finds joy in decorating, so be it. At least, it’ll all be organized now, thanks to you! 🎉 That’s wonderful! Looking forward to more decluttering at Grandma’s house content! Hope the garage sale is successful!

Grandma loves her things and good for her. Nothing wrong with that, to each his/her own. What you are doing now is so very helpful for the future when all of her things will need to find new homes. You now know all of the stories of the sentimental value of her things. This actually seems like fodder for a sentimental book. Take a picture of the item on display in her home and add the story. When it’s complete and all your grandma and all of her things are gone, you all can each have a printed book of the items and stories to help you reminisce. This is such a project of love.

I’m a senior I do not decorate anymore. All that stuff is gone. Hallelujah. Don’t like the clutter. You’re doing a great job. Be safe. God bless.

We don't do all this season decorating in the UK, I personally think it's a waste of money and just consumerism gone daft, plus storing it all. You have the right idea of just not falling for the hype anymore. 💐❤from 🇬🇧

I'm a minimalist. I decorate by switching the colors on my sheet set on my bed :) Simple but effective. I also have fall/ halloween/ christmas pajamas :D and the last decoration is my bath and body works plug ins. I use them year round and I change them up for the season. For summer I have a blue neon shark :) It's an extremely simple way of decorating but I'm not overloaded with useless pillows/ signs/ junk that I dont use. It's all stuff I want and use every year :)

I am also a senior & can identify with the accumulated treasures. Actually I thought Gabbi was lucky that her grandma still has an interest in decorating. I find I have lost all interest.

I think Grandma should be doing Swedish death cleaning. Maybe she should be considering the fact you will have to do this again after she dies. Your Grandma has a lot of stuff, even after the declutter. Is decorating for the seasons an American thing designed to get you to buy more from the stores??? Then only decorations I have are the ones on display and that is more on the minimal side. I have decorate with the pieces I love. It's wonderful you are helping........

I'm still amazed at this terrific undertaking. I'm 77, and I've gotten rid of so much seasonal decor, and it feels good. I enjoyed it fir many years, but now it takes up too much time and energy. Christmas, yes. Other holidays, maybe a wreath, a few items. I'm sure your grandma will decide to begin to narrow her stash down soon.

It's completely okay if she doesn't Gabi hasn't even gotten rid of her massive hoard of stuff... So i really dont understand attacking the mother when she herself has more stuff than her.

I used to like to decorate for the seasons and holidays but it all became TOO MUCH. Storing all the stuff, putting it all out, and then putting it all back again. I feel free with all the extra space, and without all that extra needless work. But to each his own. You are a wonderful granddaughter Gabbi!

It may not be the case for your grandmother, but today people don't visit others like they used to-neighbors, family, friends. We used to come into each other's homes frequently and spend time, you know, enjoy a cup of coffee and a visit, celebrate holidays. So we wanted to make our homes pretty, fun, inviting. It's sad, but people don't have the desire or capacity anymore. I'm just 50 and feel this isolation. I have purged a lot and I've only had about 20 years of collecting household decorations.

Please don't take offence, but here in the UK we just don't do all this decorating thing, I'm always so overwhelmed when I see the sheer amount of stuff Americans have for each season. We decorate for Christmas and that's about it, although, all the shops are now selling Autumn and Halloween junk, I fear we're going down the same road. It's just too much.

I'm a senior, and (when there's room), I like having some of my various holiday decorations (esp the fragile ones) right near where I use them bc of that easy accessibility aspect you mentioned. The rest go in a storage box.

I only decorate for Christmas. My apartment is small so storage is at a premium, so I chose one holiday. I collect Hallmark Star Trek Ornaments and I have that bin and one other, plus my fake tree. Makes things very easy.

I'm hoping what you're hoping... once you gather all the decorations together, she'll be able to see the overabundance. When you help her decorate for fall, she can hopefully let go of what doesn't get selected to be put out for decor. That's when all of your hard work will pay off. 🤞
