Cold meatloaf sandwiches with Bennett's chili sauce were AMAZING back in the day. Plus Mom's macaroni salad, pickles, potato chips, and fruit salad. Tons of ice in the cooler, and a big jug of iced tea. Those were the days and I thought they'd always be. *sigh*

Hello , my mother just told me she can not find Bennett’s chili sauce . She lives up north in PA. Can you tell me if you can still find it please ?
@emdee77442 жыл бұрын
@@InFltSvc Hi! Bennett's got bought by another company. They changed the formula, then stopped making it altogether. A decent homemade substitute is combining Heinz's bottled chili sauce with your favorite brand of sweet pickle relish. Taste it as you combine the two ingredients so you get the proportion right and it tastes the way you remember. Heinz is the only one that includes the bell peppers in their chili sauce and that makes the distinctive difference. I hope this helps out! I miss Bennett's too. It was great on hamburgers as well.

What a memorable and wonderful video Grandma and Grandpa. From the meatloaf to the coleslaw, wind cake and blueberries. A lot of people of today don't even know what wax paper is. I used to take my children there and picnic and I loved to do my bird watching and photography. We used to drive up to Hunting and Lloyd Harbor even in the fall and spring as it was open all year at the time. Your picnic looked so inviting, " I'll take a meatloaf sandwich with ketchup ", thanks for the memories and tell grandpa eating a sandwich, berries and wind cake with your hands is the way to go. You both are the best, be well, be safe, peace. " Let's go Mets "

I"m so glad that you are showing people the benefits of using waxed paper and paper bags! Plastic bags are SO expensive, and most of the time, you can re-use paper bags, as you point out, Grandma. I even use paper bags for giving gifts of cookies. I use a hole punch after folding the top, and then I can put ribbon in and make a bow. Then I write names, such as "For Susy", and everyone seems to feel that the cookies are more special than if they came in a zip lock bag. The cost of wax paper is also better than other kinds, and we use that a lot, also. Thanks for taking all of us on the picnic with you and Grandpa!

Hi Polly Alice I agree about plastic bags being so expensive. I also use the paper bags for giving gifts and do exactly the same punch a hole and use a ribbon and make a bow and write the name or the occasion on the bag. Everyone loves it. Good point about the reduction in garbage. Single-use plastics have caused such an astronomical increase in trash. Those of us old enough to have lived in the prior times can remember a time with much less trash than is generated now. I try to reuse, save, or recycle everything I can, but it's best not to generate it in the first place. (What on earth am I going to do with all of those cottage cheese and yogurt containers??🤔😂)

Grandma I LOVE LOVE LOVE this video, I think it’s the BEST one you ever made and here is why. (1) I am a HUGE picnic fan and take my mother on them all the time and just came back from one we took today out at the lake very close to what you did. I like to keep it simple with a sandwich, side , drink, cake and fruit as it travels well . I have a round picnic basket with all the traditional items inside. I also am a huge fan of using wax paper just like you do. (2) I love that you filmed out on your venture. It’s is a beautiful park and really brings depth to the story of the video. I also love meatloaf sandwiches with a lot of ketchup. I hope you will do more like this if possible and thank you for sharing on how they did it back then.

@@GrandmaFeral I remember going camping with my parents in the mid 1960's with my parents and 4 siblings in the big ole station wagon. The place we were going was a 5 hour drive up north. Well my mama partially cooked a whole turkey, then wrapped the whole hot roasting pan in wool blankets, then put it in a straw lined box to finish cooking under it's own steam on the 5 hour drive. When we got to our campsite the turkey was fully cooked. It drove us all crazy smelling that turkey on the way. LOL. It's been forever and a day since I've been to Caumsett (though I visit the closest town beach, the one my Grandpa and Mom called "the brickyards", with some regularity). Coincidentally during the Depression, Mom had a school friend whose family lived there above the stables. I think the father was a groomsman for the horses, or some other type of caretaker for the estate. Mom visited her friend there on a number of occasions; it left a big impression on her, so it must have been a big deal to go there. Now that it's a park, it is such a lovely and peaceful place for anyone to visit. Great video, Grandma, Grandpa, and LF! PS, going back even further in time to when my grandfather was a young boy of 6 (~1907), he used to work at the brickyards (which is now the West Neck Beach area, nearly captured in that final shot), carrying water to the workmen, who were immigrants from all over. Mom always said he learned to swear in six different languages there...but I never heard him use any of this early knowledge, lol. Well, maybe in Italian once or twice.😉
@GrandmaFeral2 жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia I always enjoy hearing about your Mom, Dad and Grandparents. Talking about the brickyards beings back memories of my Dad using those bricks around his house and having a pile of them near his shed. We had taken a few of the bricks to use in our backyard. We had a perfect day at the park. It is always so relaxing and peaceful. Did you hear they are going to open a new eatery at the old dairy barn site on New York Ave in Huntington Station. it is going to be called the Dog House and they will be selling gourmet hot dogs. It will be strictly drive-through or walk up. I am glad to see new buildings going up around town. Thank you so much for watching and have a good day❤️Grandma👩🏻
@patriciamorgan65452 жыл бұрын
@@GrandmaFeralI probably have some of those bricks here, too. No, I hadn't heard about the hot dog place! That's good news. That place has been vacant for so long; it's a tough plot because it's so tiny, definitely has to be a quick drive-through place. Hope the captive audience at the new laundromat across the street will help keep it in business. I remember Grandpa going there to Dairy Barn to get vanilla bean ice cream, which in those days (1970s) had real vanilla seeds in it, and the butter pecan was loaded with buttered pecans. It's also the corner where Billy Joel had his motorcycle accident, way back when (1982).

@@GrandmaFeral my mom basically died 20 yrs ago from a bad vehicle accident that wasn’t her fault..my mom suffered for 20 yrs and was just a shell of her former self.it was very hard to see my mom like that for all of those years..I will cherish your videos as much as I can.

For the ice, any thermos during the Depression era? Did they also use enamel plates to take to picnics or was it just for camping? I enjoy all your videos. Thank you both!

Hi during the Depression era not everyone had a thermos. Mainly the enamel plates were used for camping. I am happy to hear you enjoy my videos. Thank you so much for watching and have a nice day ❤️Grandma👩🏻

I have a foglizzio (?) picnic basket from 1930's (?) I have no idea if it's worth anything, its in good/fair condition .from my Great Gma
@GrandmaFeral2 жыл бұрын
Your vintage picnic basket is most likely worth something especially if it is rare and not many out on the market. Many people today like the picnic baskets to use as a display item in their homes❤️Grandma👩🏻

Do you find that the wax paper is cheaper than buying plastic baggies?

Years ago I would keep a couple sheets of wax paper on my fridge top, and toss it when it got dusty. Also kept a roll handy to use in the car, and restaurants with toddlers .
