@@Linda_Mayoh Oh, that sounds good! And easier, too. Gives it more flavor, and soupiness that I would enjoy (I often make my childhood 'tuna noodle casserole' into a stovetop soup version, without any pasta product or baking at all). Thanks for the suggestion, will definitely try it!

My grandma made this with hard boiled eggs, she called it cream chicken on toast because my dad wouldn’t eat tuna. As a newlywed my mom made it for dinner one night and my dad saw her put tuna in the dish. I'll bet this recipe was the predecessor to my beloved tuna noodle casserole! This was real comfort food from my childhood, in the 60s and 70s. If you didn't actually go the extra step to make a baked casserole with crispy breadcrumbs on top, it became a quick and easy "open and dump" stovetop recipe that Mom could put together when she got home from work (with a little help from me, opening and prepping all those cans). Now that I am cutting out most pasta and carbs, I have further morphed this recipe to omit the 'noodles' (elbows or small shells) altogether, and just make it a soup instead, still from all cans, or it won't have the same nostalgic taste: cream of mushroom soup, mushrooms, tuna, and yes, peas. Grandma, I'll have to try your version of this, but it will be as a soup, or maybe over vegetables like broccoli, because I rarely have bread in the house. (I think, though, that I'd rather have the bread!😉)
@GrandmaFeral3 жыл бұрын
Grandpa and I like bread but we usually don’t eat white bread only occasionally. I will be making tuna casserole because we always have it during lent with noodles of course. Keep warm with this snow storm👩🏻
@patriciamorgan65453 жыл бұрын
@@GrandmaFeralGlad to hear you'll be making it, too. I'm curious whether you use noodles and actually bake it into a casserole? Mom always used elbow macaroni for hers, but I like using the small shells (when I splurge on carbs), because the peas joyously nestle inside, like pearls in an oyster! 🦪 Too bad Grandpa won't indulge in that happy accident...but you can!😉 We're seeing a little let up in the snow/sleet, so I'm getting ready to go out and do a little preemptive shovelling. And feed the ferals, of course! Stay warm and safe!

A lot of the time, people take the food they have on their table (or even the food that are readily available on the shelves at supermarkets) for granted. It is not easy to imagine a time when one would need to turn to recipes like this one in order to ensure one's family gets fed every day. Thank you for sharing this recipe, it not only made me curious to try it myself, it also reminds me just how lucky we are that our generation has not have to go through what previous generations went through (knock wood!).

You have to count your blessings. I learned about the depression from my Mom and her family. My Aunt told me many times that she was so hungry during the depression. Oh, how interesting! I've never heard of creamed eggs before. Do you chop up hard-boiled eggs right into the sauce, or serve the sauce over whole eggs? If whole, are they hard-boiled, fried, or other? Sounds like a great way to use eggs, especially if you have a lot coming in (i.e., if you have laying chickens...which I do not, now, but did as a kid).

My mom made this my entire childhood except we used egg noodles instead of bread cause it fed more people cause we were usually low on money. We called this tuna noodle, and it's still my favorite childhood meal.

Hi I also had it with egg noodles. My Mom called it tuna casserole. Glad to hear it is still your favorite meal. Have a nice day❤️Grandma👩🏻

Mama used to make this when I was little. She always served the canned peas in a serving dish decorated with pea pods. This is my comfort food. I remember the T.V. adds of Charlie the Tuna.

Love your recipes. Thank you. I really liked television commercials way back when. Actually enjoyable, now commercials are “rapping” garbage.

You are so right the old commercials are the best. Thank you for watching👩🏻

I love that Charlie the Tuna lamp. I remember back in the day, companies used to have a lot of these types of products available for purchase in order to promote and sell their product. I have never seen Charlie the Tuna lamp though. He is really cute. I remember my mom sending in these things to purchase for us kids. Like the scooter pie doll, etc.

Hi I love my Charlie the Tuna lamp. I still have a few items that my children received in the mail sent to them from my sister in law. She saved all kinds of labels and bar codes to get free items. That is something companies don’t do anymore. Thank you for watching❤️Grandma

That's a great recipe! Big fan of it, myself. As for SOS, my old man introduced me to it when I was a kid. I should make some for myself this weekend.

If you have not had it in awhile you should make it for yourself. Enjoy and Thank you for watching 👩🏻

Oh, thank you, that looks delicious! I'd add diced celery and let that cook until softened, plus peas and carrots. (Hm, I see I/m halfway to a cooked version of my grandmother/s pea salad recipe.) -- If you haven't done a pea salad recipe, Grandma, that would be a great suggestion too. Your recipe here sounds comforting and cozy, for anyone who likes tuna.

Hi I would like pea salad but Grandpa dislikes peas and I don’t think he’d eat it. Creamed Tuna on Toast is still one of my favorite meals from when I was growing up. My Mom made it often on Fridays. I hope you have a nice weekend.❤️Grandma👩🏻
