Chimney Pipe Installation for Wood Stove through roof.
Installing a wood burning stove vent pipe through the roof for this homeowner. He did all the wood stove install inside and through his ceiling but was unsure of the roof part. This is a stainless steel triple wall chimney pipe suited for the high temperatures. I believe it was DuraVent brand.

I enjoy the running commentary. I like to know the "why" to do stuff, not just the "what" to do. You're always going to run into situations that are new and unique and if you know "why", then you can adapt your thinking to cover a previously unknown situation. I've got a couple of stove chimneys to do this month, and this is good to see. Like you say, I'm always in "learn" mode. I'm nearly 70 years old and I'm not too proud to learn new stuff. Please keep up your good work!

Great video, that's a great looking install and nice vent stack system. A mentor once told me after a training presentation I'd given, "Folks aren't here for a slick talkin' presenter, they're here to see you, so just be yourself." That's given me a big confidence boost. That's a long winded way of saying: we enjoy your commentary whether it's real time or voice-over. Thanks for the great content you're putting out!

This is how it should be done by a homeowner. Do the downstairs work yourself, save the $ on the install, then call the roofing professional in to make the penetration through the roof and let him make sure it is flashed & shingled properly. I have seen so many DIY'ers that really tried to do a good job on a wood stove vent, but missed the small stuff like tucking the brace brackets under a shingle and instead, they nailed it right on top of the shingle into the roof deck. So rather than screwing with proper embedment into the top chord of a truss and getting excellent tension values, they're expecting a simple nail through a shingle into 1/2" deck to withstand the multi-directional wind forces on the vent. Then they're expecting the dab of silicone caulk on top of the nail head to give them water tight conditions. There's way more to this and Brian, you make it look easy. Cheers to you

Maybe that audio issue was a blessing in disguise. When you do voice overs, you have the opportunity to add things you might have forgotten and it's smoother than adding text into the video. As usual, I've learned a few really helpful things. Namely that this transparent harnesses and safety ropes are nice cause they don't hinder your movements and get in the way of your work like those solid color ones. 😂 I've used a plumb bob to send mine through the roof and have boxed out the truss on two installs. Not sure if that was the best thing, but it all felt strong. Smart thinking with the lager to smaller diameter anchor rods. When water gets in those, they will rust and break free. Cougar Paws are great on singles, period. But they absolutely suck on steel! That lower roof would be about the steepest I'd go with em. Thanks again for making the time to share your knowledge and skills.

Narrating was great - I liked that ! Very instructive, educational video - I learned a lot. Only down-side, I get motion-sick pretty easily, and with all of the swinging back and forth of the camera, I could only watch 5-ish minutes at a time. Great video. Thank you. One thing to keep in mind for diy is to make sure you get the right pitched flashing as well. Most are 0-6/12 and if you're over that you need a steep pitch flashing. For the height, I've always heard 2 feet higher then whatever is in a 10 ft radius..

Just a added install tip. All wood stove pipe installs need to be a minimum of two feet above the peak. I like three feet for a good draft. Dura vent install kits come with a great install book.
@ScottWConvid19

I think that changes with a lower pitch roof when the pipe is further away from the peak. When I installed mine, the clearance was dependant upon the level distance either to the roof or to the peak.

You can also shoot a nail through the roof center of the trusses, then put your flashing down onto the roof (center of the nail poking through) mark the shingles with marker or whatever, cut the shingles straight up from the lowest row of shingles you can, cut all the way up and around the circle you marked and straight back down to the row you started. Now all you gotta do is cut the plywood circle you desire with Sawzall. Pull any nails loose you can to slide the flashing up underneath all the rows till it sits flush with the circle you cut out of the shingles. Nail it on place and run the flue pipe up through the attic. Sometimes down, screw that bitch in place, caulk it, call it a day bud. I did hvac flues for 10 years that way, never had a leak from shingles not overlapping the flashing enough or any of that.

I like your work I just hate those style boot for metal bestos you should get yourself a set of rolls and a pipe lock machine and make either copper or galvanized thicker materials and saulder your flange to your stack and lay out your own storm collar caulking on them stacks always fail and leak and then people monkey crap the piss out of them and it's so esthetically unappealing I only make my own sleeves stacks boots vents everything and all is sauldered you could have the shop tools and still fit them in your garage without taking up much room your job looks good you quality of work is grade a just the materials suck box store materials are too china quality

Mainly because code requires that there be a minimum distance between the top of the pipe and structure, so that winds coming from any direction won't obstruct the positive upflow of the exhaust. If it's closer to a structure, wind can cause burble effects which can interfere with the draft and smoke can go down the pipe into the house or air intake.

There are also issues that can arise with the change in barometric pressure and therms.
